Helping students master /ɹ/ can be tricky, but combining traditional therapy techniques with biofeedback can make a big difference. While biofeedback can enhance your teaching, many biofeedback options involve costly equipment with steep learning curves. Partners on our research team have developed a freely available website that allows you to use visual-acoustic biofeedback to boost your teaching. This presentation will break down why /ɹ/ is so challenging, effective teaching strategies for /ɹ/, and how visual-acoustic biofeedback (VAB) can give students a visual guide to adjust their speech in real time. We'll cover practical strategies for cueing, shaping, and practicing /ɹ/. We'll also touch on techniques to avoid because they lack strong scientific backing. By blending VAB with traditional /ɹ/ strategies, you'll have new tools to help students succeed with this tough sound! Bring a laptop and a headset (or lapel microphone) to practice. *microphone/headset should be corded to allow you to plug into your computer (e.g., Apple EarPods, Earbuds/inline microphone, gaming headsets); Cordless/Bluetooth headsets like AirPods do not work well with this website.

    Program: School Library System

    Audience: K-12

    Dates: 5/9/2025

The use of board games in education is under-utilized. During this session we will focus on secondary level board games. As we come out of this pandemic, and adjust to new directions, education can reinvent itself, and create better learning environments. Gamification is a popular teaching buzz word that suggests educators take an element of play and retrofit it to achieve a classroom learning objective. Games can engage students with different learning styles and inspire individual creativity. Board games represent the missing tool in our toolboxes, and they can replace the traditional lectures with a method that reaches all students. This interactive professional development is for educators who want to use board games as teaching tools.
    • Board games can be used in all content areas and teach a variety of skills including:
    • Social, Emotional, Learning concepts
    • Problem solving
    • Trial & Error - Failure as a way of learning
    • Collaboration & Teamwork
    • Creativity & Problem Solving

    • During this professional development educators will experience board games, be provided with sample lesson plans and include time to actually play games.
