1. 2538: Strategies for Improving Classroom Management (Grant-funded)

This course will give participants strategies for improving classroom management to create an orderly, well-organized environment where students can succeed and complete rigorous work. Participants will explore approaches to developing positive classroom communities that promote good relationships among the teacher and students, as well as among peers. Effective classroom management is vital for teachers' ability to teach and students' ability to learn. Participants will learn how to maintain good student behavior, create feasible classroom expectations and procedures, and implement behavior modifications when needed. Behavior intervention plans will be discussed, as will resources and service providers within the school building available when help is needed beyond the classroom. In addition, coursework will cover ways to help students monitor and regulate their own behavior.

Participants will investigate how the brain processes, stores, and retrieves information as well as what teaching techniques support students' learning the most. The course provides tips on how to grab students' attention, keep it, improve their memory, and prepare them for tests. In order to ensure that all students achieve their potential, students will acquire cutting-edge methods for creating lessons and assessments as well as for modifying instructional strategies. Participants will examine a range of learning techniques that can be applied to enhance student mastery of relevant material. Utilizing online resources will improve your knowledge and abilities. In this online course, we will closely examine the strategies used to effectively teach English as a New Language (ENL) students. We will focus on best practices including co-teaching, helpful web tools, strategies for classroom teaching, and meaningful classroom talk. We will brainstorm ways to involve parents as we create a welcoming classroom environment for all students. We will explore resources and cross-reference lesson plans and curriculums so that each teacher has customized lesson plans to address individual needs. At the end of the course, you will have a toolkit that will include visual ideas, translation resources, conversation tools and vocabulary resources.

In this course, participants will explore the current state of mental health among adolescents, which has shown a marked decline in several different measurements. We will examine the role of technology, play, and independence among children and adolescents. In addition, we will explore how the role of technology in schools and how it is impacting education. Participants will read The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt. There will be 4 required synchronous Zoom sessions to discuss the books. Participants will complete online assignments after each session. Participants should purchase the book prior to the class starting. Participants are responsible for purchasing their book for this course. Priority registration is available for TCCW consortium members.

8. 134:Empowering English Language Learners: Practical Strategies for K-12 Classrooms

This 45-hour asynchronous course equips K-12 educators with practical, research-based strategies to support English Language Learners (ELLs) across all content areas and proficiency levels. Grounded in the principles of scaffolding and aligned with CR Part 154 and NYS proficiency level guidelines, this course is designed to help teachers create inclusive, high-access classrooms where multilingual learners can thrive. Participants will explore: -How ELLs are identified, assessed, and supported in New York State -The foundations of instructional scaffolding and culturally responsive practice -High-leverage strategies like visual supports, sentence frames, cooperative learning, and formative assessment -How to design content and language objectives that address both academic and linguistic demands -Ways to adapt instruction for students at Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding, and Commanding levels Participants will engage in reading articles, watching videos, and applying these strategies to their current or hypothetical teaching settings. We as educators understand that we are living in a time when social emotional learning is an urgent matter. Mental health issues and school violence are on the rise. It is clear that so many students are emotionally deprived, socially disconnected, foundationless, and uncentered. We as educators need to get back to where the whole child is cared for and nurtured. Creating a safe haven and a refuge for children of all backgrounds and abilities. Giving the students the ability to face difficult emotions and discover what is really is the underlying issue. Educators in this course will develop strategies for putting mindfulness activities into their classrooms to improve student learning outcomes and behaviors.

This asynchronous, self paced book study is for any K-12 teacher that wants to learn more about making thinking visible. We will explore how to make student thinking visible to deepen understanding and improve instruction. Using Ron Ritchhart and Mark Church's follow up book The Power of Making Thinking Visible as our guide, we will read about new thinking routines, research, and case studies to create a culture of thinking in our classrooms. This book study will be structured with discussion prompts, a single synchronous session to discuss the ideas presented in the text, and challenges to try the thinking routines outlined in the book.
