6. CCTC-The Writing Revolution Book Study

Have you ever wished for a practical guide to teach writing? What if that guide took the mystery out of learning to write well? Authors Judith C.Hochman and Natalie Wexler write, "The Writing Revolution (TWR) is as much a method of teaching content as it is a method of teaching writing. There's no separate writing block and no separate writing curriculum. Instead, teachers of all subjects adapt TWR's strategies and activities to their preexisting curriculum and weave them into their content instruction." Build your writing toolbox as The Writing Revolution identifies six different principles that take the reader from sentence writing, to grammar, and finally to writing process, planning, and revising. The book is helpful for teachers of all grades and content areas. The self-paced online course will offer 10 CTLE hours upon completion. There are 5 one-hour instructor led online sessions. Up to 5 additional CTLE hours will be offered for participation in the online sessions.

10. BCTC - 50 in 50 Challenge

Challenge yourself; challenge yourself for 50 days to walk, run, bike, swim, Zumba 50 miles within 50 days. Select your start date and end date that totals 50 days and complete the miles. The Mindful Schools approach starts with educators practicing mindfulness to cultivate awareness and agency to foster educator well-being.

Outcomes:

• Explore ways to be present here and now, paying attention to our thoughts, bodily sensations, emotions and external environment with kindness, non-judgement, and curiosity.

• Identify the difference between ‘Being mode vs Doing Mode'.

• Apply practices that promote embodiment including expanding awareness and solidity.

• Discuss ways that mindfulness practices support skillful and compassionate responses to cognitive biases and negativity biases.

How can we teach critical literacy skills in a way that reaches our students? Critical literacy is the students' ability to extract the meaning and reflect upon various texts. Through analyzing and evaluating texts, information can be comprehended with its implied meanings. In this workshop, attendees will consider how students in today's digital age with diverse backgrounds/interests can impact how teachers should be instructing critical literacy. Students can have more interest in practicing these skills when texts relate to their interests, align with the diverse populations of the community, and include technology that is a part of the 21st century digital age. Through this seminar, the goal is to educate elementary teachers to utilize critical literacy skills that are relatable to content. Presenters will discuss research and evidence-based approaches teachers can use to effectively instruct critical literacy in their classrooms that will make an impact on every student. Target Audience: Elementary teachers who are looking to further develop their teaching skills in Literacy in order for students to become proficient readers and writers.

Research indicated a strong correlation between phonemic and phonological awareness skills and reading success. This virtual workshop is designed to create an understanding of effective instructional practices for phonemic and phonological awareness, as well as how these practices build a basis for students to learn how to read. There are a variety of skills that fall under the umbrella of phonological awareness, phonemic awareness being one of them. Participants will reflect on their current knowledge of phonological and phonemic awareness, identify the differences between the two, and build an understanding of how both are an essential part of a student's literacy development. Additionally, we will present critiques of this method with a focus on culturally sustaining practices and pedagogies that will meet the needs of all learners. Presenters will discuss research-based practices for supporting the development of phonological and phonemic awareness including its definition, developmental progression, assessment, and instructional strategies. By attending this professional development, attendees will have a stronger understanding of phonological and phonemic awareness. As well as knowledge of how to implement a variety of strategies and skill-building activities related to phonological and phonemic awareness within their classroom.

Get ready to learn fun and creative ways to infuse physical activity into your classroom setting. Providing students with opportunities to move is critical, now more than ever! This experience will have you embracing the importance of classroom integrated movement and will leave you with the confidence to infuse active learning regularly with your students.

This is a 45-minute immersive workshop for faculty and staff delivered in the classroom setting with students. Since you don't leave your classroom, you'll know immediately which activities are suitable for teaching your students in their regular learning environment, and you'll get on-the-spot help for problem-solving challenges and limitations. Nick will provide access to online resources for new ideas you can utilize after the session. All regular classroom staff should plan to participate- up to 8 classroom staff (principal, co-teachers, therapists, TAs, aides, etc.) in one session. Participants will receive CTLE credit from the Teacher Center. Faculty and staff will sign an attendance sheet for credit, student information will not be collected.

Outcomes: - Participants will embrace the importance of allowing students to move throughout the day. - Participants will learn physical activity strategies appropriate for their classroom.

April 25th Nick will be at Freeville Elementary School and April 26th he will be at Cassavant Elementary School.
How do teachers enhance students' learning? What skills can they teach to provide a better understanding? Comprehension is a term which involves the use of different skill sets working together to develop an understanding and meaningful interaction with a text. For most educators, comprehension is an all-encompassing term used within classrooms. In this workshop, attendees will reflect on what comprehension is as well as dive into evidence-based practices and skill sets within comprehension such as summarizing, metacognition, and making predictions. Participants will receive in depth instruction on how to develop their student's comprehension skills in a variety of ways. During this presentation the research behind utilizing close reading for the comprehension of both narrative and informational texts will be discussed. 21. SUNY Cortland: Determining Effective Instructional Strategies for Remedial Readers

How do you support all of the students in your class? Most classrooms have a range of diverse learners with various needs and learning styles. When planning assessment, instruction, and classroom activities it is important to consider the diverse learners and their needs. We often think about our remedial readers and how to support their learning. In this webinar, participants will examine their present understandings of differentiation for remedial learners and go deeper into enhancing and improving them to better fit the dynamic world of today. Attendees will come out of this workshop with strategies in the 5 dimensions of differentiated instruction. These dimensions of differentiation include content/curriculum, instruction, product/student outcomes, and you as the teacher. Educators will be able to apply these strategies in their classrooms and school curriculum to promote student engagement and comprehension. Utilizing technology is a critical piece to being able to communicate in the 21st century. Viewing various texts online can be easier in a variety of formats leading to differences in accessibility and usability. Teachers and students benefit from the use of technology as a means of communication and idea sharing. Technology is a part of education at every level and can create a positive and fulfilling learning environment. Some methods of sharing information can lead to more thorough and meaningful conversations. Through the synchronous Teams meeting, teachers can expect to learn about various types of technology they can implement with their students such as Jamboards, Padlets, and Discussion Boards and the various benefits to student learning and collaboration. Teachers will learn about tools available to highlight, underline, annotate, and share ideas with their students as a method of providing feedback and support to their students. The teachers will be able to share different online technologies they use in their classroom and find beneficial to their students. Utilizing peer communication within texts can allow students to develop meaningful thoughts about the text and further develop by connecting with their peers.

Many teachers will agree that writing is a complex task that requires background knowledge and experience, explicit instruction, and patience. In this workshop, attendees will investigate the impact creative writing, Social-Emotional Writing, and writing data can have on writing instruction.
