Dates: 7/17/2023 to 7/27/2023

Carol Ann Tomlinson's book, How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms, helps teachers shift their mindset and their practice around differentiated instruction. This book is full of practical strategies but also helps teachers understand how to align decisions about differentiation with curricular goals, assessment, and student needs. Participants in this course will briefly explore the foundations of differentiation, learn a decision-making model to ensure that grade level curriculum is accessible to all students, look at actual lessons, units and classrooms with differentiated instruction in action, with content relevant for elementary and secondary classrooms in nearly all subject areas, and problem solve and share ideas to understand how to infuse differentiation into an everyday practice. This blended book study consists of synchronous and asynchronous work. The synchronous work will be as Zoom meetings that are scheduled at 9:00 am -10:30 am on July 17,19, 21, 25, and 27th. The asynchronous work consists of independent reading and postings in Google Classroom for which the remaining 7.5 hours of CTLE credits will be earned. The asynchronous work may be completed prior to or during the weeks of July 17-27. See the course syllabus on our website under Professional Development/Summer Book Studies, for more information. Program: Upstate PDRC

Audience: Religious and Independent School Personnel: K-12 classroom educators (general and special education), administrators, paraeducators, support providers, and complementary/special area teachers.

Dates: 7/24/2023 to 8/2/2023

Ross Greene's book, Lost at School, describes how his road-tested, evidence-based approach, Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS), can help challenging kids at school. His lively and compelling narrative includes tools to identify the triggers and lagging skills underlying challenging behavior. During this book study participants will explore the foundations of challenging behavior and motivations behind it, look at an evidence-based approach (CPS) to help organize responses to challenging behavior, and review and practice using the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP) to identify how to assess and view behavior from a lens of lagging skills to prioritize behavioral learning needs in a logical sequence. We will explore case examples of student behavior and staff responses to help understand and improve our future responses. Participants will engage in group problem solving and share ideas to understand how to turn the challenge of responding to behavior into approachable and actionable steps. This blended book study consists of synchronous and asynchronous work. The synchronous work will be as Zoom meetings that are scheduled at 9:00 am -11:00 am on July 24, 26, 31, and August 2nd. The asynchronous work consists of independent reading and postings in Google Classroom for which the remaining 7.0 hours of CTLE credits will be earned. Participants should plan to read the entire book prior to July 14th. See the course syllabus on our website under Professional Development/Summer Book Studies, for more information.
