    64. Breaking Boundaries: Integrating Design Thinking and The Case Method to Revolutionize Learning (Presented by TELL Award Recipient)

Program: LHRIC - Instructional Technology (Model Schools Courses)

    Dates: 2/11/2026 to 2/12/2026

Presented by TELL Award Recipient Rich Bertrand
"Breaking Boundaries: Integrating Design Thinking and The Case Method to Revolutionize Learning” invites educators teaching grades 7-12 to join a practical, hands-on professional development experience focused on applying Design Thinking in the classroom. The workshop combines IDEO's EDIPT (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) framework with the Harvard Business School (HBS) Case Study method to support student-centered learning, innovation, and problem-solving-bridging humanities and STEM in powerful ways.
During the virtual sessions, participants will explore the foundations and classroom applications of Design Thinking, gaining experience in each EDIPT stage. The workshop begins with an introduction to Design Thinking principles and the contributions of IDEO, Stanford University, and David Kelley. From there, educators move through the EDIPT model with activities like bottom-up problem identification, crafting "How Might We?" statements, and rapid ideation brainstorms. Participants will then learn effective strategies for prototyping and testing, examining diverse approaches and real-world classroom examples that illustrate successful implementations.
Participants will then tackle a collaborative, hands-on mock project during the afternoon session, simulating a task similar to one they would assign to their students. This immersive experience culminates with peer presentations and constructive feedback.
The program includes three virtual check-in sessions following the initial workshop. These 45-minute sessions offer opportunities for educators to present planned projects, receive pre-implementation guidance, and gather post-implementation feedback to refine practices and maximize educational impact.
Educators completing this workshop will emerge equipped with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to implement student-driven Design Thinking projects supported by powerful AI integration.
Persons of the jury, we are looking for open-minded and rational educators to role-play alongside LHRIC facilitators in a "mock trial" session format. During the day, we will encounter various ethical and interesting scenarios around AI use, and will use a mock trial format to inspire discussion and debate. If you are interested in hearing what the "prosecution" and "defense" attorneys have to offer, and if you're interested in poring over various learning exhibits with your colleagues to learn, form opinions, and come to your own conclusions, then kindly bring a device and report to court. Participants will also have the opportunity to create their own "case" based on an ethical scenario of their choice.

NOTE: This course may be taken as a standalone session, but it's also part of a learning pathway that can earn you a Level 3 Badge ("Ethical Leader.") To learn more, visit https://sites.google.com/lhric.org/lhriclearningpaths/learning-in-the-age-of-artificial-intelligence.
