On Day Two, the studio is yours. You'll synthesize your new skills into DIY Project Cards-quick-start, swappable activity templates that you can trade with fellow participants. You'll walk away not just with new skills, but with a physical (and digital) deck of ready-to-use projects to spark creativity in your classroom this fall.

The question is not just "when to refer”; it's "why?” Determining why a multilingual learner is struggling and whether a special education referral is warranted remains one of the most complex challenges educators face. Behaviors that may raise concern about a disability can also reflect second-language acquisition, cultural and linguistic diversity, access to appropriate educational opportunities, or other factors that influence learning and performance.

This workshop explores a culturally and linguistically responsive approach to examining student concerns before referral, with attention to language development, instructional access, learning environments, assessment practices, intervention efforts, and legal requirements.

Participants and members of MTSS teams will consider how concerns identified through classroom data and student performance may warrant targeted Tier 2 supports and additional problem-solving before referral. Through case studies and collaborative discussion, educators will learn how to examine language differences from a disability and make more accurate, equitable, and defensible decisions for multilingual learners.

Participants should bring a device to access workshop materials.

New York State's Portrait of a Graduate provides a shared vision for the knowledge, skills, and dispositions students need to thrive in college, career, and civic life. This professional learning experience is designed to help school and district leaders explore the six attributes of the Portrait of a Graduate-Academically Prepared, Creative Innovator, Critical Thinker, Effective Communicator, Global Citizen, and Reflective & Future-Focused-and consider their implications for teaching, learning, leadership, and school improvement. The Portrait of a Graduate is informed by the principles of the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) Framework. Participants will examine how the Portrait of a Graduate can serve as a framework for aligning district priorities, instructional practices, student experiences, and professional learning efforts. Through discussion, reflection, and application, leaders will explore how the six attributes can be embedded within curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student support systems to create a more coherent and student-centered K-12 experience. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of school and district leaders in moving the Portrait of a Graduate from vision to implementation. Participants will identify leadership practices that make Portrait of a Graduate expectations visible, measurable, and sustainable through supervision, evaluation, coaching, professional learning, and continuous improvement planning. Leaders will leave with practical strategies for aligning their schools and districts to this emerging vision for student success. Participants: School leaders who evaluate teachers and district leaders who evaluate principals and are new to their role, school, and/or district. Program: 2026-2027 - Leadership

Audience: School and district level leaders

    Dates: 11/24/2026

    New
Strong schools are built on more than individual initiatives-they are built through coherent systems that align vision, instruction, leadership, professional learning, and continuous improvement. In this interactive leadership session, participants will explore the concept of internal coherence and its critical role in sustaining school improvement and maximizing the impact of instructional leadership. Using current research and practical leadership tools, participants will examine the four components of internal coherence, assess the strengths and opportunities within their own organizations, and analyze authentic leadership case studies through the lens of coherence. Throughout the session, leaders will consider how teacher evaluation, professional learning, strategic planning, and district priorities can function as interconnected components of a unified improvement system rather than isolated initiatives. Participants will leave with practical leadership strategies and an action plan for strengthening coherence within their schools or districts while enhancing their effectiveness as instructional leaders and evaluators. Participants will: Understand the concept of internal coherence and why it is essential for sustainable school improvement. Examine the four components of organizational coherence and their relationship to leadership practice. Conduct a self-assessment to identify strengths and opportunities within their own systems. Apply a coherence lens to authentic leadership and APPR case studies. Develop practical leadership moves that strengthen alignment among vision, instruction, evaluation, and professional learning. Create an action plan to improve organizational coherence in their school or district. For questions regarding this activity, please contact Zena Stevens.
