15. DEI Matters: A Foundational DEI Professional Learning Journey for Todays Educator

PLEASE NOTE: YOU MAY REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT AT ANYTIME, EVEN PAST THE FIRST DATE AS ALL CONTENT IS ASYNCHRONOUS AND SELF-PACED. THIS COURSE WILL REMAIN AVAILABLE THROUGH DECEMBER 13TH. DEI MATTERS is an asynchronous online self-paced professional learning course for in-service educators in today's schools. New York State Board of Regents and the State University of New York have called to action the prioritization of DEI efforts in our schools. Educators often find themselves underprepared to meet this call to action because they may lack or have gaps in their foundational knowledge of DEI matters in education. Let's change that! This professional learning course gives educators access to ten recorded DEI modules. Each module builds off the other and intentionally carves out a sustainable DEI pathway for educators to talk the talk and begin walking the walk in ways that personally and pedagogically empower themselves and can equitably affirm, include, support, and uphold their students in PK-16 schools. Each module contains a critically reflexive learning checkpoint and includes accompanying resource documents. There is a guided notes action plan document that can be completed with each module. There is also a dialogue facilitation document for self-processing or group-processing. Educators who complete the professional learning course receive a DEI MATTERS certificate of completion. Module topics include: (1) Building a DEI community; (2) DEI Literacy: Key terms and concepts; (3) Social identities and education; (4) Microaggressions, bias and education; (5) A DEI educational framework: Culturally-responsive sustainable education; (6) Building an inclusive classroom; (7) Anti-racist education (8) Anti-classist education; (9) DEI dialogic pedagogy skills for dialogues across difference; (10) Allyship, coalition building, and solidarity in education.

16. "New Teacher Mindset” Book Study -CLOSED

The "New Teacher Mindset” is a collaborative effort book by educator/authors Trevor Muir and John Spencer, on a mission to ensure that educators maintain their traditional wisdom, but ensure teaching methods evolve with the needs of their students. It provides practical and innovative strategies for any new teacher on day one and any veteran teacher on day 1,000 and beyond. Through meaningful discussion, collaborative "play” sessions, and expert advice, participants will be able to take away ideas to ensure students are college, career, and civic ready graduates. Some of the topics included in the reading, as well as in class activities, will include building relationships, proactive classroom management, climate, culture, organization, authenticity, differentiating instruction, and assessment. Muir and Spencer also remind teachers of the importance of self care and being a superhero. This course will include the book "New Teacher Mindset - Practical and Innovative Strategies to Be Different from Day One” by Trevor Muir and John Spencer. There will be five in-person meetings on Wednesdays for support, discussion, and collaboration. The book and participant stipend will be provided through the OHM BOCES Teacher Center. Books will be sent via BOCES courier to participating teachers prior to the first meeting. New K-12 teachers are encouraged to attend and veteran teachers looking for fresh ideas are welcome! Participants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person conference sponsored by the Teacher Center and Program Professional Learning with Trevor Muir and John Spencer on March 14, 2025!

By joining together in this multi-district program, students and adult advisors will: - learn about perspectives and life experiences different from their own as they continue to seek understanding, respect for, and appreciation for others. - have an opportunity to participate in discussion facilitation training and create action plans for elevating student voices and bringing about change in - their own schools. Expose students to community leaders at a culminating youth summit. - develop strategies for ensuring that all students feel a sense of belonging in school. - learn from community leaders and celebrate student leaders at a culminating Youth Summit. Participating districts are expected to provide an adult advisor to accompany students to all of the 2 hour discussion sessions and participate in the activities. 26. Digital Photography

Participants will learn the fundamentals of digital photography and importing images into Adobe Lightroom. The session will include an overview of digital cameras, lenses, and other necessary gear to create compelling images. During the hands-on workshop, participants will have the opportunity to shoot images in the photography studio and natural light locations around campus. We encourage participants to bring their own camera, memory card, and storage device if possible.

Graphite Drawing session in which participants will review and explore sighting principles and triangulation strategies to accurately represent the Human figure. The 2-hour session will consist of multiple short poses exploring anterior, posterior, medial and lateral views. The session will close with one long pose. In this workshop, participants will make a small, personalized image then combine it with an MV theme and print on a t-shirt. The process from carving to printing will be demonstrated and explained. Shirts will be ready to take home at the end of the day. This workshop is designed to teach you the skills you need to create your own hand printed shirt design.

30. Video Basics Part 1: Camera Controls and Filming

In this introductory workshop participants will be taught essential video functions on a DSLR camera, how to achieve proper exposure, and learn essential camera handling techniques. After the instruction period, participants will have the opportunity for hands-on experience filming on our campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring an SD Card, USB Drive to save their work, and a DSLR/Mirrorless camera with video recording capability. DSLR cameras will be provided to participants who do not have their own camera.

31. Transformative Projects: Enhancing Learning and Assessment through PBLA

Project based learning can sound intimidating. Studies have found that students that participate in project based learning do just as well as other students on standards based tests, but do better on assessments that include essential skills for the workforce. PBLA takes old school projects and transforms them for students to uncover deeper understandings and allow students to have multiple opportunities to demonstrate this knowledge. We will take a closer look at the steps to transition from a project to a project based learning experience, give participants time to collaborate on creating their own projects, and offer many project assessment tools and resources.

In this workshop, we will take images from the Digital Photo class and create Gelli Plate prints from laser jet printouts. Instruction will consist of digitally preparing images for laser jet prints and then paint application for the creation of Gelli Plate prints. All paint supplies and paper will be provided by the MVCC School of Art.

In this introductory workshop participants will be instructed on how to use the basics of Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software. Instruction will include importing footage, editing on the timeline, adding text, color correcting footage, and exporting a completed video. Attendees are encouraged to bring the SD Card containing the footage captured from Part 1's workshop and a USB drive to save their work.

38. Mastering De-Escalation: A comprehensive guide to crisis intervention

Mastering De-Escalation provides participants with a framework of strategies for understanding how an emotional crisis situation occurs and how to best intervene depending on where the child is on that spectrum. Participants will learn about the importance of "Self-Awareness”, "Understanding What Motivates Behavior”, "How Various Components of the Environment Can Impact the Emotional Crisis” and "Simple Strategies for Intervention and De-Escalation”. In addition, we will discuss nonverbal communication and the messages we send to children that we do not often intend.

This 2 hour session will cover topics that include best practices to utilize during instruction within a diverse classroom. Join us in this professional development book study "Sentence Strategies for Multilingual Learners" by Nell Scharff Panero and Joanna Yip. This book will discuss high impact strategies designed to support academic literacy for multilingual learners and all students. These strategies promote a dual approach to content and language learning, enabling educators to foster students' writing, critical thinking, and comprehension across diverse content areas. This book study will cover how to integrate these methods to enhance writing and literacy, while also supporting strategic inquiry. Computer science will be its own certification beginning in September 2024; so this community would not be beneficial to those solely teaching computer science.

"Youth Mental Health: What's Changed and What's Needed? Dr Joanne Joseph, Psychologist, will address the factors contributing to the decline in youth mental health during the past 15 years, and what can we do at school and at home to support increasingly anxious, depressed, lonely, and addicted students? Erika Kistowski will explain her role as a School Counselor at Remsen Central School and will share how her therapy dog, Easton, became certified as a therapy dog and how he helps throughout her day-to-day activities. Easton helps create a positive school environment and can provide a sense of security to students and faculty/staff. She will describe how she uses games and other activities to build relationships with students. All guests are invited to stay after the program for a pot-luck dinner compliments of Alpha Chi. 56. Placing Student Voice at the Front and Center with enVision Math

This session will focus on building equitable mathematics classrooms by placing student voice at the heart of the learning experience. We'll engage in problem solving and three-act math tasks to explore how to create inclusive, student-centered environments where every child's thinking is valued. Come discover ways to use open-ended problems to support diverse learners, empower students to communicate with you and their classmates, and build equitable opportunities for all students to engage in deep, meaningful math exploration and problem-solving.
This webinar will provide in-depth explanation, resources and activities to support the implementation of two key science practices that are often challenging for teachers and instructional leaders to support: scientific modeling and argumentation. Participants will learn about what these practices are, how they can be supported in the classroom, and what we can learn about student thinking by engaging students in these practices. Drawing from his ASCD book The Instructional Leader's Guide to Implementing K-8 Science Practices, Dr. Lowell's webinar will include opportunities to unpack these key science practices, observe classroom video of these practices in action, and analyze student work. Participants will also have opportunities to work with instructional tools and strategies, discuss what this may look like in their context, and try out the practices in their own classrooms. The two-session webinar is designed for teachers, teacher leaders, instructional coaches, and principals, and will provide opportunities to consider both what these practices can look like in the classroom and how instructional leadership can support teachers as they engage students in these practices.

This resource equips educators with approaches that bring content to life across grade levels and subject areas. Participants will delve into instructional methods designed to support newcomers, students with interrupted or limited formal education, and learners of all English proficiency levels. This book includes chapters on scaffolded instruction, updated visuals, a unit planning template all aligned with research based practices and strategies that support academic language development. This book study is designed for flexible participation, allowing educators to engage with the materials at their own pace. Book will be provided to participants. Link to Google Classroom will be sent prior to the start of the first session 12/3/24. Participants can begin the book study on December 3, 2024. Book Study ends March 25, 2025.

Session 1: Three Anchors to Ground Your Decision Making Kick off the series with a session designed to provide a clear, research-driven framework to support decision-making in reading instruction. Dr. Beverine-Curry will introduce three foundational anchors-key principles in the Science of Reading that educators can rely on to guide effective, sustainable reading practices. Gain insight into grounding literacy decisions in robust evidence, setting a strong foundation for the following sessions.

The "New Teacher Mindset” is a collaborative effort book by educator/authors Trevor Muir and John Spencer, on a mission to ensure that educators maintain their traditional wisdom, but ensure teaching methods evolve with the needs of their students. It provides practical and innovative strategies for any new teacher on day one and any veteran teacher on day 1,000 and beyond. Through meaningful discussion, collaborative "play” sessions, and expert advice, participants will be able to take away ideas to ensure students are college, career, and civic ready graduates. Some of the topics included in the reading, as well as in class activities, will include building relationships, proactive classroom management, climate, culture, organization, authenticity, differentiating instruction, and assessment. Muir and Spencer also remind teachers of the importance of self care and being a superhero. This course will include the book "New Teacher Mindset - Practical and Innovative Strategies to Be Different from Day One” by Trevor Muir and John Spencer. There will be five in-person meetings on Wednesdays for support, discussion, and collaboration. The book and participant stipend will be provided through the OHM BOCES Teacher Center. Books will be sent via BOCES courier to participating teachers prior to the first meeting. New K-12 teachers are encouraged to attend and veteran teachers looking for fresh ideas are welcome! Participants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person conference sponsored by the Teacher Center and Program Professional Learning with Trevor Muir and John Spencer on March 14, 2025!

The Leader's Guide to Conflict Management by Jen Schwanke (ASCD 2024). 3 sessions supporting school leaders including teacher leaders and those who aspire to teacher leadership. Conflict is a part of life including schools. Learn how to anticipate, analyze, and act/respond (or not act) in a way that best helps the school and its community of learners. Specifically, through high-energy, high-impact virtual sessions, attendees will gain immediate practical tips to manage conflict in their schools. Session 1: Conflict: A Closer Look The first part of our learning will help attendees embrace conflict rather than running from, denying, or deflecting it. Attendees will be encouraged to study their current mindset, identify their current conflict management strategies, and consider one immediate and impactful change to improve their management of conflict. Session 2: Anticipate, Analyze, and Act Using some of the learning from Part 1, attendees will consider a practical problem-solving cycle to address conflict; anticipate- analyze-act Session 3: Specific Conflict… and You In the final part participants, we will study some of the typical conflicts present in school and apply the anticipate- analyze-act cycle to successfully manage them. Attendees will consider conflict management as an ongoing "get to” rather than "have to. ”Sessions will be recorded. Participants are expected to fully engage in the chat box and in break out rooms.
