Program: PPD

Dates: 9/19/2019 to 4/16/2020

It is entirely possible for students to memorize mathematics facts and manipulate numbers without having any deep knowledge of the concepts or processes involved. Memorization of rules and mastery of computation are not the same as true knowledge of mathematical concepts and ideas. At all grade levels, certain math topics can be difficult for students to fully understand. Working together with other teachers, we will develop strategies and skills for immediate use in your mathematics classroom. This in-service offering will focus on deeper understandings of concepts at your students' grade level and not on shortcuts or memorization. By the end of the program, participants will:

• Develop teaching strategies to use in their mathematics classroom for better student understandings of fundamental concepts.

• Make connections within math concepts.

• Discuss commonalities with topics in all grade levels.

• Learn skills to enhance reading for understanding specific to mathematics and word problems with a focus on essential vocabulary. Book - Mathematical Mindsets

The Media Services program has purchased Discovery Education Streaming Service for all teachers and students in grades K-12, in the Oneida BOCES Media Service. Designees from every school, possibly a librarian and teacher partner, or a technology integration specialist, are invited to become the expert in Discovery Education Media Streaming to ensure your students and faculty are able to fully utilize this service. This is the second Discovery Education training class, and will be more in depth than the one held in August. However, if you were not able to attend the class in August, you are still welcome to come and learn about Discovery. If you are not familiar with Discovery, please contact the School Library system to do a pre-training, so that you will be ready for this second level class. This will ensure your school community can make use of all the features and tools that Discovery Education has to offer. We believe that providing the best copyright compliant resources to our educators and students enables the ethical use of information technology while providing an abundance of resources. We ask that schools send at least one person, and up to five people to the training. Lunch will be provided.
