Our team will walk through the models that begin with a phenomena and/or scenario and stimulus to use prompts that engage students in at least two of the three dimensions as well as prompts that require the referencing of the stimuli while answering the question. These assessments will be added into our program in the fall.

One of the three dimensions of NYSSLS, Crosscutting Concepts are applied across all domains of science. They link the different science domains, providing common themes in categorizing and organizing how students think. Crosscutting Concepts describe what students are to look for while investigating to relate knowledge between multiple science fields. Join the OHM Science Center to explore the 7 Crosscutting Concepts. We will walk through each crosscutting concept, their progressions, suggested questioning prompts, and share examples from the K-5 program. This session is available P-12.

The current transitional shift in the OHM Science program is support for greater phenomena prompts, models for student engagement to guide lesson sequence, and greater understanding of three dimensional approaches. The "Think Like a Scientist” mini unit has been created in response to our focus on demystifying the practices and crosscutting concepts. Everyday examples are used to promote relevance before having the opportunity to apply to the kit specific content. The resource has been created to be adaptable for implementation. There is no one way to use it. Join the OHM Science Center to learn at least three ways to incorporate Think Like a Scientist in your classroom. This session will review the design intent of questions and explore the released examples and couple them with an evaluative rubric that can be applied to your own exams.

School to Career Programs and MVCC are collaborating to provide the Advanced Manufacturing in the Mohawk Valley Bus Tour. This is an informational experience that will provide current workforce opportunities and tours of DanFoss, Indium, Trenton Technology, and Wolfspeed. The tour focuses on the current Advanced Manufacturing businesses, as well as the future outlook of employment in the region. Additional lessons, shadows, and opportunities for students can be provided through School and Business Alliance throughout the school year.

61. Social Identities and Education Workshop

One step in teaching for educational equity is to focus on understanding social identities and education. The Social Identities and Education Workshop aims to increase understanding of the relationship between social identities and in/equity in education context. This workshop strives to position educators to create spaces of inclusion and belonging for students across social identity group. In the first half of the workshop, participants will learn about personal and social identities using an intersectional framework. In the second half of the workshop, participants will engage in activities to understand how systems of power, privilege and oppression shape lived experiences, especially in context of education. Finally, participants will develop strategies for creating educational spaces that are inclusive for students of all social identity groups and leave with actionable ideas to use in their own educational spaces.

62. Microaggressions and Education Workshop

One step toward teaching for educational equity is to focus on understanding microaggressions. The microaggressions workshop aims to raise awareness of microaggressions in K-12 education context. In the first part of the workshop, participants will receive content knowledge on microaggressions across identity groups. Participants will gain information on what microaggressions are; the messages microaggressions send; the roots of microaggressions (hint: this includes bias!), and pedagogical strategies to interrupt and disrupt microaggressions in school. In the second part of the workshop, participants will practice disrupting a series of school-based microaggression scenarios and work to reflect, develop and be prepared to implement strategies to prevent microaggressions from happening in their own educational space.
