10. Concrete Algebra

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Mathematics Teachers, Grades 6-8; Algebra teachers

Dates: 10/29/2025

Algebra is often regarded as the "gateway” course toward college, marking the point in a student's math journey where ideas become increasingly symbolic and abstract. For many learners, this transition can be difficult if their foundation in earlier grades has not fully supported the ability to move fluidly between representations.

The New York State Numeracy Briefs highlight the importance of using multiple representations-such as visual models, manipulatives, graphs, and symbolic notation-as a foundation for conceptual understanding. Being deliberate about how and when we help students shift from the concrete to the abstract is critical if they are to succeed in Algebra and beyond.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Engage in hands-on tasks designed to introduce key Algebra concepts in the middle grades.
  • Explore strategies for intervention that support students who need additional time and scaffolding.
  • Practice moving between different representations to strengthen students' understanding of abstract algebraic ideas.
  • Consider how to structure lessons that make the symbolic side of mathematics more accessible and meaningful.

  • By the end of the session, participants will leave with ready-to-use classroom tasks, along with a deeper understanding of how to deliberately foster students' transition from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.

In this session, we will dive into the high impact practices that allow us to utilize Eureka Squared in a thinking classroom. The practices discussed will intertwine with, and make extensive references to, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning. Participants will experience what it means to be fully engaged in a task and learn how the concepts of deep engagement apply to curricular tasks. We will examine how we can draw thinking tasks from Eureka Squared. In particular, we will look at how the BTC lesson structure supports students to move collective knowing and doing into individual knowing and doing.

About the Facilitator

Amy is a consultant with Building Thinking Classrooms, and brings extensive experience coaching K-12 teachers and leaders to launch and sustain thinking classrooms, consulting with districts to design change initiatives, and evaluating the impact of BTC implementation.
