1. School Leaders Institute July 2022

We are excited to bring back the School Leader's Institute live and in person for school and district leaders! Join us for updates, and an opportunity to reflect on ways to support teaching, learning, and student success.

The Institute will begin with the latest NYSED curriculum updates and their implications for your work as leaders in social studies, science, ELA & literacy, math, computer science, DEI and more. The HV-RBERN will be joining us in the morning session to provide needed updates around ELLs.

After lunch, you will have an opportunity to collaborate on topics that interest you through an Ed Camp. To learn more about how an Ed Camp works, follow this LINK.

5. First Aid Update for Coaches by Howard Arciniegas

Program: Coaching Courses

Audience: Coaches

Individuals who apply for a Temporary Coaching License Renewal or a Professional Coaching License or License Renewal must obtain a valid (not expired) first aid certificate of completion by completing either an Initial or Review course (not a Challenge or fully online course).

This course is required every 3 years to maintain First Aid Certification.

6. Full First Aid Course for Coaches by Howard Arciniegas

This course satisfies the state guidelines for elementary and secondary coaching certification. This certificate is valid for 3 years. After 3 years the First Aid Refresher Course is required to maintain certification.

7. New Administrator Lead Evaluator Training - HYBRID COURSE **In-Person Session**

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: New Administrators Responsible for Completing Teacher Observations

Dates: 8/23/2022

This training is for administrators who have not been previously trained in evidence-based inter-rater reliability. Lead evaluators are those who conduct summative annual professional performance reviews of teachers. Each district must certify that lead evaluators have been trained in the minimum requirements as outlined in the APPR regulations.This training will include all of the state-prescribed components including the nine required elements.

The goal of this course is to provide training that emphasizes evidence-based, inter-rater reliability using your District approved rubric. To accomplish the goals of this training registrants will participate via a blackboard course and a either a live and in-person workshop or an online Zoom workshop. Once a participant has been approved to attend through their district, they will receive access to the Blackboard course to be completed prior to the in-person or Zoom training.

Participants may attend an in-person session August 23rd or or an online Zoom session on September 15th.

At the conclusion of this training, a video will be used for participants to script evidence, code, and score according to the components of their District chosen APPR rubric.

All participant will receive a certificate of completion and CTLE hours.

8. Implementing Studies to Promote Inquiry-Based Learning

Audience: Certified Teachers, Assistants, and Aids Directly Instructing The Creative Curriculum To District Funded Students

Come learn about the Creative Curriculum for Preschool. You will learn about the following in this workshop: Define developmentally appropriate practice, Identify developmentally informed, evidence-based, and equitable teaching practice, Explain the role of process skills in teaching and learning, Generate a web of investigations for a study topic, and Plan Wow? Experiences and a Celebration of Learning for a study topic.

The Science Professional Development Council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) that recommends professional development initiatives to better serve the needs of science educators. Members will have the opportunity to collaborate and plan future workshops and learning opportunities offered here at Rockland BOCES.

11. Middle School (Grades 6-8) NYSSLS Implementation Group

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Middle School Science Teachers (Grades 6-8), Grade 5 Teachers Welcome

13. Math Workstations with Dr. Nicki Newton

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Grades K-5

Dates: 9/22/2022

In this workshop we introduce differentiated workstations, why we need them, when we do them, how they are different from regular math workstations and why they are important and how we use them to improve students' achievement. We will consider a framework for differentiated workstations that discusses the elements of concrete, pictorial and abstract. We will look at the need for rigor (Webb's DOK) and the intersection with Bloom's Taxonomy. We will also consider the role of visual goal setting in workstation work, as well as accountability. Moreover, we will discuss intentional homework that compliments workstations and the ways in which we can parents to help their students with the work of the grade.

Dr. Nicki Newton is an education consultant who works with schools and districts around the country on elementary math curriculum (including best practices, guided math and math centers) as well as curriculum mapping. She has taught elementary school, middle school, and graduate school. Having spent several years as a bilingual teacher and staff developer, she has an extensive background in Sheltered Instruction and English Language Learner Strategies. Dr. Nicki has worked with Heidi Hayes Jacobs in facilitating both the Curriculum Mapping and the Interdisciplinary Curriculum Institutes at Teachers College, Columbia University for several years. Dr. Newton has kept her hand in the academy by teaching graduate courses for CUNY, MCNY, Mercy College and Cambridge College. Her work teaching elementary curriculum, math methods and special education courses keeps her abreast of the latest educational theories. She has presented at several national and international conferences on education- including being an invited speaker for the NEA as well as working on a special interdisciplinary social studies curriculum project for the AFT.

14. High School Science Curriculum Council

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Science Teacher Leaders, Science Department Chairs/Supervisors, Administrators

Dates: 9/29/2022 to 4/20/2023

The Science Curriculum Council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to keep informed of recent changes in Science curriculum, instruction, and assessment in New York State and provide direction for Science Education in Rockland County. Council members will have the opportunity to collaborate on Science teaching and learning in order to best prepare students for success. In addition, under advisement from Rockland Assistant Superintendents for Instruction, this collegial group will assess professional development needs for Rockland Science educators and will plan future workshops to provide secondary teachers with an informative and intellectually stimulating experience.

15. Introduction to MakeyMakey (Grades K-5)

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: K-5 Teachers

Dates: 10/4/2022

Participants will have a hands-on introduction to MakeyMakey, and come away with ideas to expand students' self-expression and creativity across the content areas, with the added benefit of addressing some of the NYSED Computer Science Standards.

16. Earth Science NYSSLS Implementation Group

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Middle School/High School Earth Science Teachers

17. Math Curriculum Council: Secondary (6-12) 2022-23

Program: Professional Development Center

Dates: 10/4/2022 to 5/31/2023

The Math Curriculum Council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) who will meet for four half day sessions to keep informed of recent changes in mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment initiatives from the New York State Education Department.

Our Curriculum Council will explore items related to improving curriculum and instruction for all students. There will be a focus on building capacity within your district as you transition to the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

The council will participate in discussions focused on research based strategies and current best practices in mathematics, develop awareness and knowledge of the progressions across grade levels, develop a global view of mathematics across all levels, share technology resources and promote a culture of collective knowledge and expertise.

Council members will have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas on how to best prepare students for success.

Participants will have access to shared materials and become part of a list serv to raise questions and get answers, not just from Valerie, but from each other!

Price is per district and includes participation in both the Elementary and Secondary Math councils.

18. Math Workstation Make and Take (K-2)

Program: Professional Development Center

Participants will share and take away workstation-ready, standards-based tasks in Mathematics.

19. Middle School (Grades 6-8) Science Curriculum Council

23. ELA Curriculum Council Grades K-5

Program: Professional Development Center

Dates: 10/13/2022 to 5/2/2023

Are you a Literacy Leader in your District? If you are, this council is an ideal opportunity for you to come share ideas, resources and strategies with your colleagues from across the county. The ELA council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) who will meet four times throughout the school year during rotating half day sessions.

During the councils, participants will examine instructional strategies and best practices currently being implemented in classrooms across the county in ELA. Updates from the State Education Department will be shared along with how to navigate the Next Generation ELA Learning Standards.

The council provides an opportunity for collaboration with Literacy colleagues across the districts to discuss professional development needs, best practices, vertical alignment across grade levels and provide direction for ELA instruction in Rockland County.

Participants will be added to the list serv to raise questions and get answers from all members of the council!

24. Physics NYSSLS Implementation Group

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: High School Physics Teachers

Candidates applying for New York State certification/license, in New York State, must complete two hours of course work in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment in accordance with Education Law. Rockland BOCES is providing a two-hour fully online certification course that fulfills this requirement. A certificate will be issued to participants at the completion of this course.

Participants register thru MyLearningPlan. Upon receipt of payment, each registrant will receive an online account.

Usernames, enrollment password for the course, and link to the course are then emailed to the student. Students may begin the course when they receive their account information. Participants do not have to wait until the date posted on this registration.

Effective December 31, 2013 all applicants for Certification are required to complete six clock hours of coursework or training in accordance with Article 2 Sections 10-18 of the Education Law. Rockland BOCES is pleased to be a provider of DASA Training. Upon completion of the workshop, you will receive a Certification of Completion.

The coursework will address the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination, marginalization and microaggressions, including but not limited to those acts based on a person's actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex.

Candidates applying for a New York State certification/license, must complete two hours of course work in school violence prevention (Schools Against Violence in Education) in accordance with Education Law. Rockland BOCES is providing a two-hour fully online certification course that fulfills this requirement. A certificate will be issued to participants at the completion of this course.

Participants register thru MyLearningPlan. Upon receipt of payment, each registrant will receive an online account. Once participants receive their account information, they may start the course. Participants do not have to wait until the date posted on the registration.
