1. Dignity Act Coordinator Training (DASA) - For First Time Coordinators

To comply with the Dignity Act, at least one staff member in each school must be designated as the DAC and be thoroughly trained to handle human relations in the areas of race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (defined to include gender identity or expression), and sex (Education Law §13[3]; 8 NYCRR §100.2[jj] [4]). The DAC must also be provided with training (1) which addresses the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination, including but not limited to those acts based on a person's actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender and sex; (2) in the identification and mitigation of harassment, bullying and discrimination and (3) in strategies for effectively addressing problems of exclusion, bias and aggression in educational settings (8 NYCRR §100.2[jj] [4] [iii - v]).

This workshop is specifically for those new to the New Dignity Act Coordinator role.

During this workshop we will address the types of prohibited conduct, classes of protected students, conduct off school property, the roles and responsibilities of the DASA Coordinator, reporting obligations, investigation requirements, and the liability for inaction. We will participate in discussions around DASA and walk through a few DASA scenarios.

4. APPR Re-calibration for Lead Evaluators

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Lead Evaluators previously trained in APPR

Dates: 9/29/2023

During re-calibration this year we will be reviewing the Danielson/NYSUT rubric in relation to best practices for supporting trauma informed instruction. Time will be spent discussing how to use the teacher evaluation rubric as a vehicle for productive professional conversations, with the goal of improving instructional practice for all learners.

APPR Re-calibration training is for any administrator/department chair responsible for evaluating and coaching teachers as part of the evaluation process. This training will continue to address all of the state-prescribed components as well as any NYSED updates on the implementation and management of the APPR system. The emphasis will be on promoting inter-rater reliability/accuracy through use of video, artifacts and discussions in small groups.

5. IMSE Comprehensive (K-2) Orton-Gillingham Plus Training (30 Hour)

Dates: 10/2/2023 to 10/6/2023

The IMSE Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus Course is a hands-on, interactive, & personalized class that provides a complete understanding of IMSE's enhanced Orton-Gillingham methodology and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom. After participating in this accredited Structured Literacy course, teachers will have an understanding of the structure and foundation of the English language as well as the research behind the science of reading. Teachers will have a basic understanding of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of RTI, including students with dyslexia. Teachers will be able to evaluate and teach students in the areas of phonological skills, phonics/word recognition, spelling, and writing. This course also includes an asynchronous component that shares research and strategies for teaching and assessing fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Comprehensive OG Plus Course is appropriate for teachers whose students are emergent and beginning readers as well as readers struggling in word recognition.

7. Math Curriculum Council: Secondary (6-12) 2023-24

The Math Curriculum Council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) who will meet for four half day sessions to keep informed of recent changes in mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment initiatives from the New York State Education Department.

Our Curriculum Council will explore items related to improving curriculum and instruction for all students. There will be a focus on building capacity within your district as you transition to the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

The council will participate in discussions focused on research based strategies and current best practices in mathematics, develop awareness and knowledge of the progressions across grade levels, develop a global view of mathematics across all levels, share technology resources and promote a culture of collective knowledge and expertise.

Council members will have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas on how to best prepare students for success.

Participants will have access to shared materials and become part of a list serv to raise questions and get answers, not just from Valerie, but from each other!

Price is per district and includes participation in both the Elementary and Secondary Math councils.

8. Introduction to Eureka Math Squared with Rockland BOCES (Grades K-2)

10. New Administrator Lead Evaluator Training - HYBRID COURSE **In-Person Session**

This training is for administrators who have not been previously trained in evidence-based inter-rater reliability. Lead evaluators are those who conduct summative annual professional performance reviews of teachers. Each district must certify that lead evaluators have been trained in the minimum requirements as outlined in the APPR regulations.This training will include all of the state-prescribed components including the nine required elements.

The goal of this course is to provide training that emphasizes evidence-based, inter-rater reliability using your District approved rubric. To accomplish the goals of this training registrants will participate via a blackboard course and a either a live and in-person workshop or an online Zoom workshop. Once a participant has been approved to attend through their district, they will receive access to the Blackboard course to be completed prior to the in-person or Zoom training.

Participants may attend an in-person session October 6th or an online Zoom session on October 12th at 12:30PM.

At the conclusion of this training, a video will be used for participants to script evidence, code, and score according to the components of their District chosen APPR rubric.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion and CTLE hours.

13. IMSE 30 Hour Morphology Plus Orton-Gillingham Training (Grades 3-8)

The IMSE Morphology Plus Course is a hands-on, interactive, and personalized class that provides a complete understanding of morphology, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension and how to apply that understanding when teaching in the classroom. After participating in this accredited Structured Literacy course, teachers will have an understanding of the structure and foundation of the English language. Teachers will have an understanding of where to begin instruction with students in all three tiers of RTI, including students with dyslexia. Teachers will be able to evaluate and teach students in the areas of morphology, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teachers will also have access to the IMSE Writing and Grammar asynchronous course to help assess and teach writing and grammar to students. The Morphology Plus Course is appropriate for students who have word recognition and spelling skills but struggle with comprehension.

20. Shifting from Student-Centered to Student-Driven Learning Environments (IDE)

Though students are at the core of a student-centered learning environment, the teachers still drive the decisions and flow in the classroom. In a student-driven learning environment, students take on the ownership of instructional decisions, such as scheduling their activities, making choices about how they engage in content, signing up for small groups, and much more. In this session, participants will begin to explore opportunities for their students to take greater ownership of their learning and set goals for shifting their instructional practice. In shifting from a student-centered to a student- driven learning environment, the workshop will focus around 6 areas - why, what, how, with whom, where, and when.

The council provides an opportunity for collaboration with Literacy colleagues across the districts to discuss professional development needs, best practices, vertical alignment across grade levels and provide direction for ELA instruction in Rockland County.

Participants will be added to the list serv to raise questions and get answers from all members of the council!

27. Introduction to PROMPT: Technique Workshop (Introduction)

Program: Professional Development Center

Audience: Speech Language Pathologists or Equivalent Designation

Dates: 11/1/2023 to 11/3/2023

In this course you receive specialized training from a PROMPT Instructor with extensive clinical experience that you can apply right away. Following the completion of this course you will be able to immediately use different levels of PROMPT technique (Parameter, Surface, Complex, Syllable) in your practice. In other words, you will be able to use your hands to help clients move their articulators. You will walk away with an understanding of dynamic systems, treating the whole child, and applying the PROMPT assessment and treatment planning process.

Intro primarily focuses on the motor speech system (Physical-Sensory Domain). Highlights include an evidenced-based framework for identifying motor breakdowns, determining treatment targets, designing treatment sessions, applying technique through interactive case studies and practice opportunities. Easy-to-use resources are provided to allow you to put what you learn into practice. Once completed, caregivers can find you on our website as being PROMPT trained, which can help you grow your practice.

This workshop focuses on teaching the technique of PROMPT. The workshops are hands-on tactile-kinesthetic input and emphasizes the need to integrate this into a holistic therapy approach.

Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of the Introduction to PROMPT: Technique workshop, participants will be able to: Describe the philosophy of PROMPT and its application principles. Apply different levels of PROMPTing (Parameter, Syllable, Complex, Surface) as appropriate to the selected cases.

Analyze speech motor subsystems using the Systems Analysis Observation and Motor Speech Hierarchy. Design interactive therapy activities that utilize all of the above.

28. Using the Creative Curriculum to Write Lesson Plans **For New Teachers**

The Science Curriculum Council is a Professional Learning Community (PLC) to keep informed of recent changes in Science curriculum, instruction, and assessment in New York State and provide direction for Science Education in Rockland County. Council members will have the opportunity to collaborate on Science teaching and learning in order to best prepare students for success. In addition, under advisement from Rockland Assistant Superintendents for Instruction, this collegial group will assess professional development needs for Rockland Science educators and will plan future workshops to provide secondary teachers with an informative and intellectually stimulating experience.

32. Book Study: Grading for Equity (and Rigor, Student Empowerment, and Motivation)

It is a common misperception that equitable grading practices are achieved through reducing rigor, or lowering expectations. On the contrary, equity is achieved through creating a system that holds ALL students accountable for learning the material. As it turns out, traditional grading practices tend to undermine this goal.

In this workshop, we will take a deep dive into Joe Feldman's Grading for Equity, and explore ways to align our practices with our intent to educate all students. The ideas presented in this text have implications for both school/district-wide grading policies as well as classroom practices.

Objective #1: Increase the number of teachers prepared to teach and deliver K-8 CS using research and evidence-based curriculum and instructional strategies.

Objective #2: Increase the number of schools offering computer science in grades K-8.

Objective #3: Increase the number of students enrolled in computer science-related courses for all students with attention to diversity -- racial, socioeconomic, gender, disabilities, ELL.

Objective #4: Demonstrate relevance of computer science education and computer science careers in local contexts (as defined by REDC).

Participants will learn actionable strategies to implement to help both students and teachers thrive. Strategies will be tailored to each participant's grade level and subject area.

Rockland BOCES is providing a two-hour fully online certification course that fulfills this requirement. A certificate will be issued to participants at the completion of this course.

Participants register thru MyLearningPlan. Upon receipt of payment, each registrant will receive an online account.

Effective December 31, 2013 all applicants for Certification are required to complete six clock hours of coursework or training in accordance with Article 2 Sections 10-18 of the Education Law. Rockland BOCES is pleased to be a provider of DASA Training. Upon completion of the workshop, you will receive a Certification of Completion.

The coursework will address the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination, marginalization and microaggressions, including but not limited to those acts based on a person's actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender or sex.
