Orton-Gillingham is a structured, multisensory approach to literacy instruction developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. Multisensory techniques are defined as using the brain's pathways of seeing, saying, hearing, and kinesthetic movement (handwriting).

This diagnostic and prescriptive approach combines remediation, based on extensive research on children with language-processing difficulties, with an analysis of the structure of the English language. Skills are taught sequentially, aligned with how children naturally develop language.

Classroom Educator Training introduces participants to the fundamental elements of an OG-based approach, characterized by explicit teaching of foundational literacy skills. The course includes an introduction to phonology and basic phonics, and emphasizes instruction to promote fluency, vocabulary development, and an understanding of language structure.

Content includes:

* Information on dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities
* Strategies for multisensory instruction
* Using assessment results to plan small- and large-group lessons
* Guidance on planning an Orton-Gillingham lesson

This scientifically based methodology is explicit, interactive, diagnostic, multisensory, and integrated.

The course is designed for general and special-education teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, speech and reading specialists, and is also recommended for instructional assistants and tutors.

Instructor: Orton-Gillingham Fellow
First step toward certification by the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators

Framing reading as both a civil right and a cornerstone of democracy, the film underscores how literacy shapes lifelong opportunity and equity.

Program: Curriculum and Instruction (509)

Audience: K-6 Educators, Math Teachers, Teaching Assistants

Dates: 7/6/2026

Meeting Times: 1:00 - 3:00 PM

How can we shift students away from mimicking teachers toward active problem solving and mathematical reasoning?

As noted in the book "Thinking is a necessary precursor to learning, and if students are not thinking, they are not learning”, this is the fundamental challenge addressed in Peter Liljedahl's book Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC), in which he presents 14 teaching practices based on his research and fieldwork with teachers across different grade levels.

In this workshop, teachers will collaborate on a thinking task in randomized groups at vertical non-permanent surfaces to experience what a lesson based on BTC practices might look like.

The session will also include a discussion of the rationale and benefits of BTC practices, along with ideas and resources for implementing or learning more about them.

Enacting the New York State Culture Standards

NYSED OBEWL is sponsoring a two-day, in-person workshop series in nine regions across New York State to support NYS world language educators in understanding and implementing the NYS Culture Standards.

Each workshop will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch on your own.

Participants must commit to attending both days in full. Eight (8) hours of CTLE credit are offered.

Day 1: Enacting NYS Culture Standards (Part 1)
Focus on the connection between intercultural competence and language proficiency in developing culturally responsive students. Participants will use authentic resources (images, artifacts, texts) to explore interpretation and cultural context. After reviewing Culture Standards 4-5 and rubrics, they will design an interpretive instructional sequence aligned to these standards.

Day 2: Enacting NYS Culture Standards (Part 2)
Builds on Day 1 by focusing on interpersonal and presentational communication. Participants will learn strategies to prompt student output using Culture Standards 4-5 and integrate these tasks into the interpretive sequence. They will then design aligned interpersonal and presentational performance tasks using the same standards and rubrics.

Registration process:
All participants must pre-register for these workshops using the NYSED registration form below. (Please note that using Frontline does not register you for these workshops.)

What is the story of your graduates, and how do you know?

The Portrait of a Graduate is more than a framework. It is a powerful opportunity to uncover and tell the story of your students as individuals, as members of cohorts, and as part of something much larger. This four-part, full-day series invites educators and leaders to explore how data storytelling can illuminate journeys of learning, identity, and growth across a P-12 system.

Together, we will move beyond static data points to build rich, meaningful narratives that reflect the full complexity of student experience, grounded in the seven elements of the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate. Participants will learn to surface and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, map individual student stories, analyze cohort trends, and connect those insights to school, district, regional, and global contexts.

Through hands-on workshops, collaborative analysis, and practical tools, this series will support you in answering critical questions:

What is the story of our students?
How do individual journeys reflect collective experiences?
How can we design systems that respond to what the data is truly telling us?

By the end of the series, participants will leave with a clear framework for data storytelling, actionable plans for implementation, and a deeper understanding of how to align their work with the Portrait of a Graduate, ensuring every student's story is seen, understood, and valued.

Registration is $1,600 per team (up to six participants).

Note: This offering is free for Data Service subscribers, and Wallkill is a subscriber.

Designed for grades 9-12 educators (with discounted pricing available for Environmental Education CoSer districts), this interactive session explores how climate education can be embedded across disciplines, not as an add-on, but as an authentic extension of disciplinary thinking, inquiry, and real-world application.

Participants will deepen their understanding of climate systems, including causes, impacts, mitigation, and adaptation, while engaging with standards-aligned, classroom-ready resources connected to New York State Education Department learning standards. Through collaboration and individual application, educators will identify entry points for integrating climate education into existing units in science, social studies, ELA, math, and CTE pathways.

Grounded in inquiry, systems thinking, data literacy, and real-world relevance, the session also highlights opportunities for civic engagement, community partnerships, and experiential learning beyond the classroom. Participants will engage in professional dialogue that supports instructional shifts and adaptation for diverse high school learners.

Leave with actionable strategies, high-quality resources, and a clear vision for empowering students as critical thinkers and informed decision-makers. Climate education in grades 9-12 is not only about meeting a mandate, it's about preparing students to analyze complex systems, evaluate solutions, and engage meaningfully in shaping a more sustainable future.
