Traditional methods of science teaching often rely on student background knowledge and frontloading vocabulary instruction to achieve student understanding. These instructional techniques tend to leave gaps in equity and student success, particularly for ELL students. The New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and the instructional shifts that accompany them have been developed to address this issue. The goal of contemporary science instruction is to integrate science and language and move students from using everyday language to specialized language in science. In this webinar, participants will experience and reflect upon contemporary ways of teaching science with a focus on how to effectively address ELL needs. In particular, the ABC (Activity Before Content), and CBV (Concept Before Vocabulary) strategies will be explored.

But fear not, we're not just talking about knowing A to Z; it's about wielding the power of letter names and their corresponding sounds, paving the way to reading triumphs (Hammil, 2004; Clayton et al., 2020; Caravolas et al., 2019). But wait, there's a catch! Not all alphabet-teaching methods cut it, and not every approach suits the little learners' developmental stages. This workshop is your beacon in the alphabet maze. We'll unravel the secrets of what preschoolers and kindergarteners need to ace the alphabet game and unleash literacy superpowers. Get ready to revolutionize your teaching with research-backed strategies that'll have your students soaring through the ABCs! 🚀🔤
