The New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and the instructional shifts that accompany them have been developed to address this issue. The goal of contemporary science instruction is to integrate science and language and move students from using everyday language to specialized language in science. In this webinar, participants will experience and reflect upon contemporary ways of teaching science with a focus on how to effectively address ELL needs. In particular, the ABC (Activity Before Content), and CBV (Concept Before Vocabulary) strategies will be explored.

Bridge the Gap is a series of systematic phonemic awareness intervention lessons for students in 2nd grade and above. The lessons can be used in small groups or with individual students who struggle to decode words automatically.
Phonemic awareness, especially when working with older learners, is something that is not often part of classroom instruction or intervention. Yet, it is often the missing piece for students who struggle to decode and encode words.
The lessons in Bridge the Gap were written to provide teachers, Reading Specialists, and interventionists with a simplified curriculum for teaching phonological and phonemic awareness with targeted instruction, based on student needs.
Curriculum structure:
Part 1: Phoneme Isolation
Isolating initial, final and medial phonemes

Part 2: Blending and Segmenting
Blending syllables and phonemes into words

Segmenting words into syllables and phonemes

Part 3: Phoneme Manipulation
Adding phonemes

Deleting phonemes

Substituting phonemes

Program: Curriculum and Instruction

Dates: 8/26/2024 to 8/30/2024

Meeting Times: 8:30-3:30 with a one hour daily lunch and breaks THIS IS A VIRTUAL TRAINING!!

New
Offered through the Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy, Orton-Gillingham is a structured, multisensory approach to literacy instruction developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. Multisensory techniques are defined as using the pathways to the brain of seeing, saying, hearing, and kinesthetic (handwriting). This diagnostic and prescriptive approach combines remediation based on extensive research on children with language processing difficulties with an analysis of the structure of the English language. Skills are taught in order based on an understanding of how children naturally develop language. Rules and patterns of the language are emphasized to prepare teachers with knowledge of the structure of the English language to teach students to decode words on their own.

Classroom Educator Training introduces participants to the fundamental elements of an OG based approach characterized by explicit teaching of foundational literacy skills. The course includes an introduction to phonology and basic phonics, and focuses on instruction to promote fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and an understanding of the structure of the language. The content includes information on dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities, strategies for multisensory instruction, using assessment results for small/large group lessons, and planning an Orton-Gillingham lesson. The scientifically based methodology is explicit, interactive, diagnostic, multisensory, and integrated. The course is designed for general and special-education teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and speech and reading specialists, and is recommended for instructional assistants and tutors.
