This introductory session will delve into the historical underpinnings of the field of bilingual special education, comparing and contrasting where we began with where we are today. The book's co-editors Dr. Gliset Colón and Dr. Tamara Alsace, will lead a lively discussion with Dr. Alba Ortiz, a pioneer in the field who continues to inform and enhance research and practice through her significant body of work.

Participants will also receive a preview of the series, which will include presentations by all the chapter authors. They will also have a unique opportunity to provide feedback and help inform future directions for scholarship in the field by voicing their thoughts on promising practices and the most compelling challenges they face.

5. RBERN #2 - ELL Foundations: Session 1 - Levels and Identification - CTLE Provider #23007

Intended for those who are new to working with ELs. In part 1 of this 3 part series, participants will learn the basics of EL identification, the levels of English proficiency, and how they are tied to ENL service and units of study.

This session will equip educators with strategies for elevating student voice and developing student oracy in the classroom, along with tangible ways to leverage students' home language skills during instruction. Concepts learned can be applied across content-areas to support ELLs' linguistic and academic growth.

This session will extend upon the morning ELL Foundation session by getting to know our multicultural communities. It is open to all educators.

Intended for those who are new to working with ELs. In part 2 of this 3 part series, participants will learn some of the competing theories that inform how students acquire language and in turn how to select strategies to support language acquisition. Participants will also be introduced to the Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Framework from NYSED.

Sometimes reading the original form of a book, novel or document is overwhelming. This is another look at things we can use in our classroom that enable our students to be even more successful without the added stress.

This series for secondary educators will compare and contrast original works of literature to their graphic novel and film adaptations to identify ways to support ELLs understanding of the content.

Participants can select which sessions they will attend through the year

August text focus will be on Shakespeare.
Who is the first person a multilingual family encounters when they enter your school/district?

Does that person feel supported in their ability to welcome and support multilingual families' registration efforts?

We encourage administrators and their clerical staff to come together to discuss meaningful parent engagement for multilingual families at registration.

We will discuss language access, HLQ, home language SIRS codes, and other registration and ELL identification procedures.
Once students have been appropriately identified and placed in programs to meet their unique needs, the challenge becomes how to effectively provide the instructional and socioemotional supports necessary for the students to learn and thrive.
This session will explore some of the curricular and instructional considerations and practices necessary to plan and implement high quality programs.
