This introductory session will delve into the historical underpinnings of the field of bilingual special education, comparing and contrasting where we began with where we are today. The book's co-editors Dr. Gliset Colón and Dr. Tamara Alsace, will lead a lively discussion with Dr. Alba Ortiz, a pioneer in the field who continues to inform and enhance research and practice through her significant body of work.

Participants will also receive a preview of the series, which will include presentations by all the chapter authors. They will also have a unique opportunity to provide feedback and help inform future directions for scholarship in the field by voicing their thoughts on promising practices and the most compelling challenges they face.

Intended for those who are new to working with ELs. In part 1 of this 3 part series, participants will learn the basics of EL identification, the levels of English proficiency, and how they are tied to ENL service and units of study.

This session will equip educators with strategies for elevating student voice and developing student oracy in the classroom, along with tangible ways to leverage students' home language skills during instruction. Concepts learned can be applied across content-areas to support ELLs' linguistic and academic growth.

This session will extend upon the morning ELL Foundation session by getting to know our multicultural communities. It is open to all educators.

Intended for those who are new to working with ELs. In this book study, participants will dive into the Honigsfeld & Dove text Co-Teaching for English Learners: A Guide to Collaborative Planning, Instruction, Assessment, and Reflection.

This session at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum will include a guided tour with Manager of School & Teacher Programs, Lindsay Kranz, who will demonstrate various engagement strategies to help ELL students think and talk about works of art to further language development. These techniques can provide space for students to use their new vocabulary in an environment that is open and supportive.

In this asynchronous mini-course, participants will receive an overview of the history and current events of specific regions/countries from which many of our refugee students and their families originate.
Participants will gain insight into the historical backgrounds of these places, the factors causing displacement, and hear some examples from students of the educational experiences they had before resettlement.

ESOL Teachers who participate in this Share Group will:
1) Share lessons, activities, resources, curriculum, and instructional strategies,
2) Expand and enrich their English as a New Language (ENL) programs at the elementary level,
3) Discuss and review NYS regulations and their implications for ESOL teachers,
4) Create a community of professional learners,
5) Increase their knowledge of collaboration and co-teaching techniques and strategies.
Anticipated Items: A Q&A session with an RBERN Specialist, curriculum and current practice resources, ENL Open House, ENL Literacy Night, Multilingual Family Night, and Multicultural Night suggestions, NYSESLAT ideas for successful implementation (scheduling, organizing, etc.), professional development presentation thoughts and ideas for school faculty and staff, personal Google email to create a Share Group Google Classroom of resources and ideas.

This series for secondary educators will compare and contrast original works of literature to their graphic novel and film adaptations to identify ways to support ELLs understanding of the content.
Participants can select which session they will attend.
April's focus will be on The Odyssey. The adaptation text, The Odyssey: graphic novel, will be provided to the first 15 registrants by March 20th.

In this introductory session, participants will learn about the stages of language acquisition and how to leverage home language to support students in gaining proficiency in English.
We will connect these strategies to the NYSED Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Framework.

Utilizing NYSED topic briefs, participants will explore advanced literacy strategies tailored for English Language Learners (ELLs), and gain understanding of the science of reading.
Participants will then integrate their learning with The Reading League Summit's Joint Statement, "Understanding the Difference: The Science of Reading and Implementation for English Learners/Emergent Bilinguals (ELs/EBs).”
This flexible course allows participants to progress at their own pace, selecting specific sections or completing the entire course. CTLE credit will be awarded based on the sections completed, offering participants the opportunity to earn between 4 to 12 credits.
