2. RBERN - Multilingual Matters Book Club - CTLE Provider #23007

Program: RBE-RN

Audience: All teachers of ELLs

Dates: 12/9/2020

A monthly educator book club to discuss rich topics related to immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. December's book is A Good Provider Is One Who Leaves: One Family and Migration In The 21st Century by Jason DeParle.

When Jason DeParle moved in with Tita Comodas and her family in the Manila slums thirty years ago, he didn't expect to make lifelong friends. Nor did he expect to spend decades reporting on Tita, her husband, siblings, and children, as they came to embody the stunning rise of global migration. In his new book, DeParle paints an intimate portrait of an unforgettable family across three generations that dramatizes how the international movement of labor has reordered economics, politics, and culture across the world. At the heart of the story is Rosalie, Tita's middle child, who escapes poverty by becoming a nurse, and lands jobs in Jeddah, Abu Dhabi and, finally, Texas-joining the record forty-four million immigrants in the United States. *This title is available through Buffalo Public library's as in print, Audible, or purchased through book sellers

Program: RBE-RN

Audience: All teachers of ELLs

Dates: 1/13/2021

A monthly educator book club to discuss rich topics related to immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. January's book is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does-or does not-say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
