Dates: 9/25/2025
RBERN West invites you to join us at the Castellani Art Museum for a powerful day of learning, reflection, and dialogue centered around the exhibition We Were There. We Were At The School. We Remember.
This exhibition features contemporary artistic responses to the Thomas Indian School, an Indigenous boarding school that operated on the Seneca-Cattaraugus territory for over a century. Indigenous boarding schools were established through the Civilization Act of 1819, and separated Indigenous children from their communities, languages, cultures, and families, all under the guise of molding them to become "fit” members of society through the "civilization process.” The deep wounds inflicted by these institutions continue to reverberate into the present day. And yet, Indigenous communities are also actively healing, reclaiming their languages, cultures, and histories.
This event offers a space to engage with the past while honoring present-day resilience. Throughout the day, participants will explore the exhibition, hear from guest speakers, learn about local Indigenous history and language reclamation efforts, and receive resources to support culturally responsive teaching practices. This session is open to all educators and is especially recommended for teachers of history and social studies.
Please Note - all sessions required a minimum enrollment of 5 participants to run. If there are fewer than 5 participants pre-registered, we will cancel the event with a minimum of 48 hours notice.
