Dates: 10/17/2019 to 12/17/2019

3 day series
Why don't our students want to write? How confident do we feel as writers and teachers of writing? The Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA remind us of the high expectations for student writing at every grade level, but how do we help our students meet those expectations? During our time together, we will explore the research behind learning to write and use this knowledge to develop new and engaging approaches. Throughout the three days, we will engage in writing, reflect upon the process, and really put ourselves in the shoes of the students. We will use the work of Gallagher, Atwell, Fletcher, Culham, Calkins and others. Let's be fearless about writing so we can teach our students to do the same.

Please bring a laptop, earbuds and an upcoming unit.

How do we use research to inform decisions in math education? What implications does research have on mathematics learning, instructional practices, and district initiatives?

The Center for Professional Development and Education Reform, in partnership with Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, is once again offering an opportunity for teachers, teacher leaders, math coaches, and administrators to come together to learn, share resources and ideas, and provide support to each other as we work to successfully implement high quality mathematics instruction for K-12 students. To embrace the shifts, challenges, and progress in mathematics education today, it is crucial that we, as a region, work in collaboration to best serve our school communities while staying at the forefront of the latest research. This year's Cadre will continue our commitment to bring research to practice to inform the decisions we make. Additionally, Cadre will continue to be a vehicle for new and returning members to:

  • come to a deeper understanding of the mathematics within the Common Core Learning Standards and prepare for the Next Generation Learning Standards as we explore the implications on teaching, learning and assessment;
  • collaborate with each other by sharing strategies and materials to support the implementation of high quality mathematics;
  • explore important topics in mathematics education such as mathematical modeling, equity and discourse;
  • participate in experiences as learners in mathematics to develop new images of mathematics teaching and learning.

Participants will experience a process of unpacking standards to gain a deeper understanding of what students are expected to know and be able to do. Time will also be given to work in grade level teams to develop a plan to ensure that students do not experience any gaps in instruction during this transition to revised standards.
