From there, we will dive deep into author Melissa Stewart's book, the 5 Kinds of Nonfiction, to explore how the five nonfiction categories that Stewart shares can be a tool for supporting the work of curating nonfiction titles that captivate and inspire many different types of readers, including those most vulnerable. When harnessed, this work can help school librarians, and other educators select informational resources that align with the mission of the Disrupt Texts movement, a crowdsourced, grassroots effort by teachers for teachers that challenges the traditional canon and supports anti-racist/anti-bias teaching pedagogy and practices. Participants will leave with practical strategies for getting started right away and are encouraged to bring a building administrator, curriculum director, ELA coach/specialist, or classroom teacher to encourage or promote collaboration and application of these strategies to classroom and ELA collections. Dates: 5/9/2023 to 5/18/2023

Cornell University developed the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model for residential care as part of its Residential Child Care Project in the early 1980's. In 2007 Cornell responded to requests from various Board of Cooperative Education (BOCES) Centers and other public schools and adapted the TCI curriculum to meet the needs of schools. There are three main competencies taught in the TCIS Training:

Competency 1: Prevent and de-escalate potential crises with students
Competency 2: Safely and therapeutically manage crisis situations
Competency 3: Be able to process with students to help improve their coping skills

There are three levels of certification:

Level 1: Verbal de-escalation skills including the Life Space Interview (initial training of 21 hours)
Level 2: Verbal de-escalation, LSI and TCIS protectives (initial training of 24 hours)

Program: Professional Development

Audience: Digital Consortium Districts

Dates: 5/24/2023

New
We are inviting district teams to come together to share their analysis and solution ideas about key challenges and opportunities for K-12 schools moving forward, with a focus on the roles technology may play. Themes we plan to discuss in cross-district small groups are moving beyond "replacement" in technology integration; regaining momentum toward 1:1; impact of technology for socio-emotional learning and mental health; leveraging technology to support differentiation and learning gaps; managing and leveraging student data; cybersecurity issues; implications of AI for schools; preparing for the implementation of the new computer science standards. The event will start with districts briefly sharing about their top challenges and opportunities - as a way to ground the themed discussions in a shared understanding of current realities - followed by brief presentations intended to serve as "conversation starters" for the small group discussions. Toward the end of the event, District teams will have an opportunity to discuss implications and possible next steps for their district, which will then be shared with the large group so everyone can benefit from the ideas thus generated.

NOTE: This is a K-12 Digital Consortium event. If your district is not yet part of the Consortium but may be interested in joining it, please contact Dave Miller (dmiller@warner.rochester.edu)

LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling)

LETRS comprehensive professional development empowers teachers to understand the science behind how students learn to read and why some students struggle. LETRS participants will deepen their knowledge of the what, why and how of scientifically based reading instruction - while sharpening their ability to diagnose why students are struggling and how to provide proven interventions. LETRS 3rd Edition professional development is delivered in a series of units that address each essential component of reading instruction and the foundational concepts that that link each component. The full LETRS course is two volumes. This 4 day series will address volume 2, units 5-8: Teaching vocabulary, language and reading comprehension, and writing.

Participants will receive access to print materials and a one year online license. Each of the session dates will be with a LETRS consultant. It is recommended that in between sessions, participants complete online practice, assigned readings and classroom applications. Districts can provide their participants credit for the asynchronous work at their own discretion.
