1. Bilingual & Dual Language PLC: Mid-West Region

Audience: Dual Language and Bilingual Education Leaders

This is a Professional Learning Community for leaders of bilingual or dual language programs to: create a support network and learn from each other's experiences, practices, and best ideas in the field of Dual Language education. Opportunities to self-assess using Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) Guiding Principles and to strengthen programs. The series of sessions are open to leaders of bilingual and dual language programs in the Mid-West Region. Please contact Anna Stukes for more information.

2. ELL Coordinator Meeting

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: ELL Coordinators/Administrators

Dates: 9/27/2023 to 5/22/2024

This is a monthly ELL Coordinator Meeting to discuss issues and needs regarding ELLs/MLs in the Mid-West RBERN Region. A Zoom link will be sent a few days prior to the meeting. PD credit for ELLs will only be granted to those who register and attend the meeting.

3. World Language PLC for 7th and 8th Grade Teachers

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: 7th and 8th Grade World Language Teachers

Dates: 10/12/2023 to 6/6/2024

This is a Professional Learning Community for 7th and 8th grade World Language teachers implementing the new World Language standards this fall. The series of sessions provide an opportunity for teachers to create a support network and learn from each other's experiences, practices, and best ideas.

4. World Language PLC for Administrators

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: School Administrators

Dates: 11/14/2023 to 5/7/2024

This is a Professional Learning Community for administrators who oversee World Language instruction to: create a support network and learn from each other's experiences and practices in managing the implementation of the new World Language standards for 7th grade and preparing and leading the rollout of the new standards for future grade levels.
We are back for a second year of learning and collaborating! The PLC for teachers of Ukrainian students is a virtual space for sharing resources and learning how we can optimize the education for Ukrainian students and connect with their families. Please join Mid-West RBERN & RBERN West for one session or all four. Topics will include, but not be limited to:

6. Welcoming New ELLs: From Registration to Exit: A NYS English Language Learner Identification Workshop

Audience: All Educators & Staff involved with intake of English language learners

Dates: 6/18/2024

Creating a welcoming environment from the very start is imperative to the academic success of students and building partnerships with families of English Language learners. This begins from the day that families step onto your campus to registering new students. Participants will learn about the process of identifying students as English language learners including considerations such as program placement, SIFE designation, language proficiency teams, and exiting the program. This workshop is intended for anyone involved with the identification and welcoming of ELLs including school administrators, administrative support professionals, and teachers.

8. Building Literacy with Multilingual Learners Book Club

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: All school staff

Dates: 7/3/2024 to 8/28/2024

This book club will focus on the book Building Literacy with Multilingual Learners: Insights from Linguistics 3rd Edition, exploring the processes involved in second language acquisition and literacy development. We meet 4 times over ZOOM to discuss the contents of assigned reading. Books must be purchased on your own.

9. Summer 2024 Author Study- July

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: All school staff

Dates: 7/31/2024

Please join Midwest RBERN for a summer author study focusing on Middle Grades author Katherine Marsh. We will be reading Nowhere Boy. Fourteen-year-old Ahmed fled a life of uncertainty and suffering in Syria, only to lose his father on the perilous journey to the shores of Europe. Thirteen-year-old Max never wanted to move from America to Brussels, Belgium and continue his life of failure, this time at a French-speaking school. But with one startling discovery, Max and Ahmed's worlds collide, changing everything they know about heroism, hope, and love. This book study will run from July 1-31. Schoology course link will be sent to participants prior to the start of the course.

10. Ancestor Approved - Book Study - virtual meeting on zoom

ANCESTOR APPROVED INTERTRIBAL STORIES FOR KIDS BY CYNTHIA LEITICH SMITH This book is a collection of stories and poems by Native writers written for 8-12 year olds. Some of the stories intersect as families plan for, travel, and attend a powwow in Michigan. Enjoy the themes of friendship, heritage, culture, trust, strength, pride, and family as you hear the stories come alive told by different voices. This book is available (free) on Hoopla as an audiobook, or at Hipocampo Childrens Books. The book study runs from August 6 - August 23, 2024. You must register by August 2nd. While most of the course is asynchronous (on your own time) there is a mandatory VIRTUAL ZOOM meeting on August 23, 2024 from 10:00 - 11:00am. Participants will receive 3 CTLE Credits.

11. New to NYSITELL & Welcoming New ELLs Hybrid Training

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: Any certified educator who has not yet been trained to administer the NYSITELL

Dates: 8/28/2024

In this course, we cover the New York state English language learner ID process from enrollment to exit. Participants will learn everything they need to know to successfully administer the New York State Identification of English Language Learners test (NYSITELL). This is a hybrid course. Participants will first join us at the Monroe 2 BOCES PD Center and will complete the rest of the course at their own pace within one month. All components must be complete to receive credit.

Please join Midwest RBERN for a summer author study focusing on Middle Grades author Katherine Marsh. We will be reading The Lost Year. Thirteen-year-old Matthew is miserable. His journalist dad is stuck overseas indefinitely, and his mom has moved in his one-hundred-year-old great-grandmother to ride out the Covid pandemic, adding to his stress and isolation. But when Matthew finds a tattered black-and-white photo in his great-grandmother's belongings, he discovers a clue to a hidden chapter of her past-one that will lead to a life-shattering family secret. Set in alternating timelines that connect the present day to the 1930s and the US to the USSR, Katherine Marsh's latest novel sheds fresh light on the Holodomor-the horrific famine that killed millions of Ukrainians, which the Soviet government covered up for decades. 14. Indigenous Peoples Day and Beyond - Culture, Values, & Literature

Program: Mid-West RBE-RN

Audience: ENL teachers, K-12 teaches, Administrators, Instructional Coaches

Dates: 10/4/2024 to 11/19/2024

BRINGING INDIGENOUS LITERATURE, VOICE, AND VALUES TO EDUCATION Part I will be an IN PERSON session, offered for three hours. What can we learn and teach about Indigenous values? Where do these fascinating cultures fit into our curriculum? Why is this important? Join us to discuss how to incorporate literature by and about Indigenous People into our teaching. We will spend time discussing children's literature by and about Indigenous and Native people to share in the classroom as well as focusing on mindfulness, gratitude, connection to nature, and history. Participants will leave with resources to use with students and ideas on how to lead, culturally rich discussions at school. Part II will be a one hour follow up session ONLINE. We'll further explore some of the ideas and topics we looked at in part I. Participants will have time to share what they've implemented and get feedback from the group. There will be time to ask questions, discuss needs for support and next steps with learning and teaching about Indigenous People. You must attend both sessions to receive CTLE credit for this PD series.
