New In this in-person workshop for all educators, participants will:
Examine the connection between diverse classroom collections and the goals of the NYS CR-SE Framework and Portrait of a Graduate
Explore practical strategies for curating and incorporating a wide variety of books across cultures, identities, experiences, and perspectives into their curriculum
Engage in honest, supportive conversation about navigating the current culture of book challenges and how to advocate professionally and confidently for inclusive literature
Walk away with a toolkit of resources, recommendations, and ready-to-use strategies they can implement
Get ready to dust off your reading glasses and rethink your bookshelves because this isn't your average professional development session! This is an energetic, conversation-filled, and yes, occasionally uncomfortable workshop designed to you to examine the role that diverse, wide-ranging literature plays in building the students that New York State envisions for the future.
Grounded in the NYSED Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) Framework and the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate, this workshop makes the case that the books on your shelves and in your curriculum are not just instructional tools. They are mirrors, windows, and doors for every child who walks through your classroom or library.
And yes, we will talk about the elephant in the room: book challenges, bans, and the very real fear many educators feel about incorporating certain titles into their curriculum. In today's climate, it can feel easier, and safer, to stick to the familiar. But here's the truth: playing it safe with your book selections is, itself, a choice with consequences for your students. We'll explore how to move beyond personal discomfort, navigate community concerns with confidence, and fulfill your professional obligation to ensure that all students see themselves in the literature they read, and are challenged to see others, too.
