1. Wilson Reading System® (WRS) LEVEL I CERTIFICATION

Description: The WRS Level I Certification prepares teachers to effectively implement WRS Steps 1-6 (4th Edition) with students reading and spelling below grade level and those diagnosed with a language-based learning disability. Participants will demonstrate mastery of the Wilson Reading System lesson plan, including multi-sensory techniques and effective strategies in a 1:1 setting. This course offers 270 CEU credit hours for PA Act 48 following program completion

Prerequisites:
WRS Introductory Course (completed within the last five years).
Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.

Course Format: Hybrid - participants can join in-person at DCIU Marple Education Center, or remotely. A combination of virtual meetings, asynchronous instruction, and in-person instruction (1 meeting) and observations

Requirements:
Complete a comprehensive online course: WRS Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader (Steps 1-6).

Conduct 1:1 WRS instruction with a practicum student for a minimum of 65 lessons with a lesson plan written for each lesson. The student must meet selection criteria and be approved by the assigned Wilson® Credentialed Trainer.

Be observed five times teaching the practicum student. Each observation is scheduled with the Wilson® Credentialed Trainer and lasts approximately 60-75 minutes.

Complete Pre and Post testing & Teacher Binder of Resources

Description: A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence can be developed with effort. Students with a growth mindset understand they can get "smarter" through hard work, the use of effective strategies, and getting help from others when needed. A fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence is a fixed trait handed out at birth. Course participants will review the research about the brain and how the brain, like a muscle, changes and grows in response to challenge. Throughout the course we will explore how we, as educators, can praise students for effort and process rather than praising them for being "smart." Description: PDE COURSE #20210074. Diversity in the classroom is increasing. For the first time in history, the majority of students are racial and ethnic minorities. Unfortunately, the teaching styles, materials, and classrooms do not reflect these diverse cultures and backgrounds, thus leaving the majority of students disconnected from the learning process. Students need to be exposed to authors and characters that look, sound, and act like them. Classrooms need to reflect diversity, not only on holidays but all the time. Spanish culture, achievements of minorities, and black history need to be embedded daily not taught only during a designated month or on a holiday. When students' backgrounds are not considered, problems such as language barriers, systemic discrimination, and lack of representation occur. Description: This course will instill a thorough understanding of how to incorporate Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences in your K-12 classroom. Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom (2018) by Dr. Thomas Armstrong will be studied, connections made to chapters, responses made to participants' posts, and a study guide completed for each chapter. With more and more students being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorders, it is important for educators to explore their perceptions and expand their knowledge base of this disability category in order to meet these students' needs. This course takes an inside look into what it is like to live with Autism. We will see and hear first hand accounts from people living with the disorder. Their inspirational and informative stories have motivated participants in the past to examine and reexamine how they work with students on the spectrum of autism. We will explore methods of motivation and classroom management in settings with learners with Autism. Given the information provided throughout the course, participants will also have the opportunity to more completely understand the many services that students with autism can benefit from and how educators can apply this learned information in their area of focus and provide effective instruction to students with mild to severe Autism.
