29. Inside the Early Adolescent Mind: You Can't Make This Stuff Up!

Program: Center State Teacher Center

Audience: All K-12 Educators

Dates: 4/14/2026

Andy Bankert spent 47 years in education-37 years as a full-time teacher and 10 years as a substitute. Long before cell phones, texting, and social media, students communicated by passing handwritten notes in class. During the 1980s, when note-passing was especially common, Andy became quite skilled at intercepting them. Despite frequent warnings that confiscated notes would not be returned, students were still willing to take the risk. For reasons even he can't quite explain, Andy saved many of these notes over the past 40 years. This presentation features 30 of the most humorous notes he collected, offering a unique glimpse into the thoughts and humor of early adolescents (ages 10-19)-students who are now in their 50s. The session also raises an interesting question: while adolescent brain development hasn't changed, has technology and social media altered the way students think and communicate? Join us for a fun and thought-provoking session filled with psychology, nostalgia, and laughter.
