Program: NERIC: Model Schools

Dates: 7/20/2020 to 7/31/2020

This course is a remote learning professional development series. Afrofuturism is the reimagining of a future filled with science, technology, engineering, art, math and media that is liberally experienced through black culture. In contrast to black history, Afrofuturism is a creative expressive process of reclaiming the past, present and future narrative of a black culture not oppressed.

77. Get Them Talking: Asynchronous Discussion Tools

Program: NERIC: Model Schools

Dates: 8/17/2020 to 8/23/2020

One of the biggest challenges of remote learning is garnering active participation from students. This was not always easy in traditional classrooms, when we were all in one place at one time, but now...Oy! You know your students have thoughts to share (even if they don't want to admit it!); and you know their learning is enhanced when they listen to and critically analyze the ideas of their peers. So, how do you translate the traditional classroom discussion to a flexible, online format? This course will introduce you to four asynchronous discussion tools that work for remote learning - Google Classroom Questions, Google Chat/Hangouts, Flipgrid, and Padlet. You will have the opportunity to experience each of these from the students' perspective (yes, YOU will need to actively participate in this course!) and we will brainstorm strengths, weaknesses, and best practices for each tool. This course is self-paced and you will work independently. However, instructor will hold live office hours via video conference to answer questions and provide guidance.

How this class supports remote learning: This course is designed for a remote learning environment - it is meant to help teachers find ways to elicit student discussion and participation when at home.

Participants will need a Google account.
