1. Grading for Opportunity

Program: School Support Services: General Professional Development

Dates: 7/24/2024 to 5/13/2025

Research indicates that there are many instances where "the ways we grade disproportionately favor students with privilege and harm students with less privilege: students of color, from low-income families, who receive special education services and English learners." (Feldman, 2019).

This professional development opportunity includes a full-day workshop in the summer, followed by four half day sessions to deepen the learning.

The purpose of this work is for participants to:
* Develop a greater understanding of inequitable grading practices.
* Reflect on grading practices and consider whether students are receiving feedback that describes what students know and are able to do.
* Analyze current grade reporting practices, and the degree to which they report students' knowledge and sills accurately and encourage intrinsic motivation among students.
* Learn from teachers and school administrators who are currently engaged in changing their grading practices and policies as they move toward achieving grading for equity.
* Create a long-term plan for changes in grading practices by exploring the essential elements of effective system's change.

Facilitator
Dr. Eva L. Jones is a leader in examining systems through the lens of cultural proficiency and providing culturally responsive professional development. Her research in developing culturally responsive systems in schools informs her work with teachers, administrators and district leaders as they come to understand the impact of bias and privilege on their daily work.
