Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 3/1/2020 to 4/9/2020

Starting Soon
WHY SHOULD EDUCATORS READ WHITE FRAGILITY?
Living in rural NNY can be a challenging place to talk about race and racism in a meaningful ways that support healthy, functional change. Many educators are wondering what to do and how to do it, we hear conversations with slurs, we see and hear about hate based violence on the news and possibly even in our own communities. If you know the time is now and you are ready to embark on some challenging learning, and do what is right and just for all children, this book study is a great place to start.
In this "vital, necessary, and beautiful book" (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and "allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people' (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

This is an online book study, responses are due on Sunday evenings by 8pm and there will be a live Zoom meeting concluding the book on Thursday, April 9, 2020 from 3pm-4pm.

Program: SLV Teachers' Learning Center CTLE #3124

Dates: 3/13/2020

"The single most important thing a caregiver can do to help a behaviorally challenging child is to be the person who, at long last, identifies the lagging skills and unsolved problems that have been contributing to challenging episodes." -Dr. Ross W. Greene
Dr. Greene's approach was first described in his books, The Explosive Child, Lost at School, and most recently in his book, Lost and Found. During his presentation, Dr. Greene will provide an introduction to the basic themes of his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model. The CPS model provides a compassionate understanding of kids' behavioral challenges and a non-adversarial, trauma informed, effective approach for reducing challenging behavior, improving communication, and repairing relationships. This model has been implemented in schools, inpatient units, residential facilities, treatment programs, and juvenile detention facilities.
At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to:
1. Describe how different interpretations of challenging behavior can lead to dramatically different approaches to intervention, and why conventional reward and punishment procedures may not be effective for many challenging kids
2. Identify and assess cognitive skills central to adaptively handling life's social, emotional, and behavioral challenges
3. Identify and prioritize unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior, and much more.
4. Describe the three basic mechanisms by which adults handle unsolved problems and unmet expectations in kids (Plans A, B, and C) and what is accomplished by each, and the three steps or "ingredients" of Plan B.
5. Describe how to effectively implement Plan B to solve problems, teach skills, and reduce the frequency and intensity of challenging behavior.
You will leave with an understanding of the underpinnings of Dr. Greene's Approach, along with practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in diverse settings.

Program: School Improvement & SLV Teachers' Learning Center CTLE #755 & #3124

Dates: 3/20/2020

Over the past fifty or so years, the management of student behavior in the classroom has gone from being a relatively minor issue to being perhaps the most demanding of a teacher's responsibilities. In this seminar, John Rosemond sets forth a new and yet, paradoxically, not-so-new approach to student discipline. The topics covered include:

1. An explanation for the rise in student behavior problems based on trends in parenting philosophy and practice that have occurred over the past fifty years.
2. An explanation of the concurrent increase in problems getting parents to accept that their children misbehave and follow through appropriately at home.
3. How to increase the likelihood of parent cooperation concerning discipline issues.
4. The essence of effective classroom discipline is not proper use of behavior-modification-based management strategies, but a proper attitude, broken down into its component parts.
5. Anecdotal examples of effective management of school behavior and school performance issues.
6. Structured Question/Answer and Discussion

Objectives:
1. Participants will possess a working understanding of contemporary parent/child dynamics, how those dynamics have changed since the 1960s, and how those changes have affected child behavior as well as student/teacher and school/parent relationships.
2. Participants will possess a working, practical understanding of the fundamental elements of effective classroom behavior management, answering the question, "How is it that even when a teacher does the right thing, a student or students will sometimes continue doing the wrong things?"
3. Participants will possess a working understanding of practical means of defusing parent resistance and defensiveness.

Why do students need Social Studies to graduate? What are the important life skills and practices learned in Social Studies? Are these skills and practices represented in the the NYS Social Studies Framework and Assessments? What resources and classroom practices are we embedding into our lessons to reach our 21st century students, while still meeting the standards and preparing them for assessments (and life)? And...finally...are standards, assessments, and essential skills for life mutually exclusive?

In this session, teachers will be inspired to think about how the NYS Social Studies Framework and Assessments open up an opportunity for all of us to expose students to important 21st century life skills and practices - including the ability to see the issues of their time as enduring issues, and the ability for them to support their own conclusions with evidence...facts. This day of engaging session activities and discussions will excite you, and your students, through the use of classroom practices, tools, and resources that support students as historical interpreters and citizens of the 21st century.
