Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 10/1/2025 to 5/13/2026

Early in 2025, several of us met to establish a Personalized World Language Instruction network, with the goal of continuing to expand our instructional skills to support each other at all point in our career, from new teachers through more seasoned. We shared our unique perspectives and wisdom.

I envision this to be office hours, where teachers can meet for support, to share successful lessons and trouble shoot issues when they arise. Participation is as needed and voluntary. I will be available at those times, but I invite the insights of other participation. Once a month, we van meet for an hour, from our classrooms or homes, to check in and support each other.

Each quarterly meeting will have a timely theme, like starting off strong, surviving the week before the holidays, finding energy in March, and finishing strong.

12. Engage the Brain: How to Design for Learning That Taps into the Power of Emotion BOOK STUDY *CTLE Approved*

Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 10/6/2025 to 11/9/2025

Closed
Research on the brain has shown that emotion plays a key role in learning, but how can educators apply that research in their day-to-day interactions with students? What are some teaching strategies that take advantage of what we know about the brain?
Engage the Brain answers these questions with easy-to-understand explanations of the brain's emotion networks and how they affect learning, paired with specific suggestions for classroom strategies that can make a real difference in how and what students learn. Readers will discover how to design an environment for learning that:
  • Makes material relevant, relatable, and engaging.
  • Accommodates tremendous variability in students' brains by giving them multiple options for how to approach their learning.
  • Incorporates Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and guidelines.
  • Uses process-oriented feedback and other techniques to spark students' intrinsic motivation.

Author Allison Posey explains how schools can use the same "emotional brain" concepts to create work environments that reduce professional stress and the all-too-common condition of teacher burnout.

Real-world classroom examples, along with reflection and discussion questions, add to the usefulness of Engage the Brain as a practical, informative guide for understanding how to capture the brain's incredible power and achieve better results at all grade levels, in all content areas.

Participants will be responsible for procuring their own copy of the book Engage the Brain: How to Design for Learning That Taps into the Power of Emotion (ISBN: 978-1-4166-2628-2).

We all want our students to feel safe, collaborate well with others, feel ownership for their learning, and be joyfully engaged in their work. Nevertheless, many teachers end up using language patterns that undermine these goals. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?:
  • We want students to take responsibility for their learning, yet we use language that implies teacher ownership.
  • We want to build positive relationships with students, yet we use sarcasm when we get frustrated.
  • We want students to think learning is fun, yet we sometimes make comments that suggest the opposite.
  • We want students to exhibit good behavior because it's the right thing to do, yet we rely on threats and bribes, which implies students don't naturally want to be good.
  • What teachers say to students-when they praise or discipline, give directions or ask questions, and introduce concepts or share stories-affects student learning and behavior. A slight change in intonation can also dramatically change how language feels for students. In What We Say and How We Say It Matter, Mike Anderson digs into the nuances of language in the classroom. This book's many examples will help teachers examine their language habits and intentionally improve their classroom practice so their language matches and supports their goals.

This session is all about turning that insight into action. You will leave with research-backed strategies for spotting learning pitfalls early and navigating around the memory chokepoints that get in the way of deep learning. Through real classroom examples and clear explanations, you will learn how to help students store and retrieve information more effectively. Whether you are looking to sharpen your own practice or guide others toward better learning habits, this session delivers tools you can use right away.

    74. Understanding and Dealing with Challenging Student Behavior *CTLE Approved*

    Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

    Dates: 3/24/2026 to 3/25/2026

In this two-day workshop, participants are provided with information regarding the various types of emotional problems/behaviors symptomatic of particular disturbances. Many times children do not choose to act inappropriately, but rather, can't control or manage their behavior/emotions without outside intervention. Participants will learn how children and youth are affected by brain development and the trauma and stress that can be part of that growth.

Participants will also become familiar with the characteristic behaviors of Disruptive Behavior and Personality Disorders to begin to recognize the need for a "prescriptive" approach as the success of interventions is linked to their efficacy with a particular type of behavior. Participants are made aware of the range of alternative intervention strategies and behavior management programs through an exploration of the cyclical nature of conflict; demonstrating how the way the student perceives, thinks, and feels is manifested in behavior, evokes a response from an adult/peer, and begins a cycle of escalation.

Behavioral first aid strategies are also introduced as ways of labeling what positive interventions can look like when addressing student behavior. By developing a shared vocabulary of names/labels to the techniques and examining when they should be used and when they are contraindicated, start can begin to plan interventions thereby increasing their effectiveness.

    Registration: 8:15-8:30 a.m. ~ Session: 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

    75. Keeping Everyone Safe *CTLE Approved*

    Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

    Dates: 3/26/2026 to 3/27/2026

One of the primary concerns staff members have is how to work with a student who is, or has the potential to become physically aggressive.

The primary goal of this two-day program is to equip staff with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to avoid and de-escalate crisis situations without the need for physical intervention. However, since physical intervention can be deemed necessary for the safety and well-being of the students, staff and environment, participants will also be taught non-aggressive intervention techniques.
