1. Complex Empathy - Zoom

Audience: All

Dates: 1/21/2021

Location: Zoom

Starting Soon

This training will assist in defining empathy as a process that takes place over time, or a destination to work toward, versus an in-the-moment set of therapeutic actions. We will work toward a definition of complex empathy, look at the importance of empathy in therapeutic work to place complex empathy in context, and then discuss empathy as a therapeutic destination in order to explore the processes required to arrive at that destination. We will then discuss two approaches to attaining complex empathy to illustrate how the process might work in the therapeutic relationship. Ian Laidlaw is the Clinic Director, VCS Mental Health Clinic, New City, NY. Minimum of 15 required.

This training will include a discussion on the immigrant experience of students and their families. We will look at the impact of the experience on family relationships and students' social life. How can we better support our students? How do we build trust with caregivers? How do these challenges affect them in my classroom? Come away with a new perspective and understanding of the challenges students face on a daily basis and new strategies to work with these students.
