1. Book Study: Five Kinds of Nonfiction

Audience: Elementary and Middle School Librarians and Teachers

Five Kinds of Nonfiction, by Marlene P. Correia and Melissa Stewart. When students understand the characteristics of the five categories, they can predict the type of information they're likely to find in a particular book and how that information will be presented. As a result, they can quickly and easily identify the best books for a particular purpose (early stages of research, later stages of research, mentor texts in writing workshop, etc.) as well as the kind of nonfiction books they enjoy reading most.

This virtual book study consists of five 1-hour Meetings throughout the summer.
Meeting dates: Tuesday, July 7, Tuesday July 21, Tuesday August 4, Tuesday August 18, Thursday August 27.
Time: 9:00-10:00am. Zoom link will be sent to registrants.

3. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics: Research-Based Practices for Increasing Student Engagement and Learning

Join us for a full-day session exploring Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. This session will immerse participants in the BTC methodology while also unpacking the research-based practices that will help shift classrooms from passive learning spaces to active thinking environments. Through both doing mathematics, and examining the pedagogical practices behind them, participants will discover how simple changes can dramatically increase the number of students thinking, as well as the amount of time they spend thinking.

Participants will be able to:

1. Explain the research foundation behind each of the 14 BTC teaching practices and how traditional classroom practices work against student thinking.

2. Analyze the interconnections among the 14 teaching practices and understand why implementation sequence matters for successfully building a thinking classroom culture.

3. Develop a plan for implementing the first three macro-moves of Building Thinking Classrooms with understanding of the research supporting each practice.

4. Building Better Writers: An Introduction to SRSD and Explicit Writing Instruction

This hands-on workshop cuts through the noise and brings together the most powerful, research-proven frameworks in writing instruction today. Grounded in the Science of Writing, this entry-level session weaves together the complementary approaches of thinkSRSD/Releasing Writers (Dr. Leslie Laud), The Writing Revolution (Dr. Judith Hochman), and other cornerstone evidence-based strategies to give you a clear, cohesive picture of what explicit writing instruction looks like - from kindergarten through 12th grade. We'll explore how skilled writers think, plan, draft, and revise - and more importantly, how to teach those invisible processes explicitly, systematically, and with joy.

This training helps administrators gain a greater understanding of what the Science of Reading has determined to be the foundational skills needed to become a proficient reader.  Participants will explore current instructional practices in reading and the impact they have on reading proficiency.  The training will also provide context for the importance of effective reading instruction and the impact that it has on equity for all students. To overcome equity barriers, school leaders need to support educators in utilizing systemic, explicit instruction to teach the skills supported by the science of reading.  This training also highlights ineffective practices and why those may not be working; this is intended to inform leadership support of teachers implementing research-based and effective reading instruction. ***Asynchronous- Training provided over the course of the month. The Assessment Essentials Part 2: Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) training package is the second in a two-part series of trainings based on assessment and builds upon foundational assessment knowledge and skills learned in Assessment Essentials Part 1. This training focuses on one of the key assessment areas of reading and math skills: CBM. Participants will learn what CBM is, common skills CBM can evaluate, availability of CBM administration packages, the versatility of CBM, how to administer and score CBM, and how to interpret results.

15. Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Mandated 6 Hour Certification Workshop (ONLINE)

Audience: Any candidates applying for certification through NYSED, including educators with initial certification applying for professional certification

Dates: On-Going (Ends Aug 26, 2026)


The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) requires that candidates applying for certification, including educators with initial certification applying for professional certification, complete 6 hours of coursework or training on harassment, bullying, cyber bullying, and discrimination in schools [Article 2 Sections 10-18 of the Education Law]. This training also addresses microaggressions and social patterns of harassment, bullying, and discrimination.

This fully ASYNCHRONOUS workshop runs from August 5-26, 2026. Participants work at their own pace during this window, to complete all tasks and assignments by the course end date (August 26, 2026). The course is composed of seven learning sessions, including a "getting started" introduction and 6 modules consisting of recorded lectures, videos, readings, and activities. Participants will need access to a computer or device with internet access that will allow them to watch videos, view and complete documents in PDF format and Google Docs, complete Google Forms, and engage in online activities.

Registration ends on Monday, July 27, 2026. Payment must be received no later than Friday, July 31, 2026. Please mail your CHECK, PURCHASE ORDER or MONEY ORDER ONLY to:

On Wednesday, August 5, all registered participants will receive an email providing instructions for accessing the course. Upon confirmation that all coursework was completed, ONC BOCES will report your completion to TEACH electronically. If you fail to complete the course by Wednesday, August 26, 2026, you will need to register and pay to retake the course during the next offering.

20. TCIS Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools Initial Training - August 2026

Audience: Teachers and Staff who support Students in Crisis Situations in need of De-escalation training

The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) system is an adaptation of the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention System (TCI). TCI and TCIS embody the same concepts, but TCIS uses language and scenarios specific to the needs of a school audience. TCIS is a trauma-informed system that provides school staff with safe, effective, and trauma sensitive skills to manage the emotional and behavioral challenges they encounter in their daily interactions with students.



TCIS recognizes the many challenges teachers and school staff face such as fluctuations in class size, staff shortages, ever-changing initiatives and regulations, children who live with complex trauma, and the diverse social economic conditions among school districts.

This professional learning session prepares experienced teachers to serve as mentors to new colleagues. Grounded in the NYS Mentoring Standards and Commissioner's Regulation 100.2(dd), the session moves participants through a purposeful arc: understanding the philosophy and structure of the mentoring program, developing empathy for the first-year teacher experience, building a concrete Mentoring Plan, and reflecting on the skills, beliefs, and mindset that define effective mentoring. Through collaborative protocols, structured planning time, and self-assessment activities, participants leave with practical tools they can use at the start of their mentor-mentee relationship.

Coffee, tea, water and light snacks are provided at our workshops. Participants will have a one-hour lunch break (on their own).

34. Foundations of Effective Reading Instruction: Understanding the Science of Reading

The Transition Targeted Skills Group (TSG) is a result of the OSE Educational Partnership Designations for a Focused Intervention. This provides districts with the requirements of the State Performance Plan (SPP) 13: Secondary Transition. During this TSG we will review the requirements and provide professional development encompassing the best practices to meet the requirements of Secondary Transition Planning and the Documentation of this in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) of students that are 14 and older.
