3. Elementary School Counselor Workshop: CSCP Curriculum Exploration and Delivery

Program: Instructional Support/School Improvement

Audience: School counselors & Administrative School Leaders

Dates: 2/9/2018

AM Session:

- Will offer elementary school counselors exposure to three different curriculum programs that area school counselors are utilizing to deliver core curriculum through their comprehensive school counseling program:

- We will experience a lesson, discuss what implementation looks like in districts and pros and cons from the school counselor’s perspective.

- The following curricula will be reviewed: Second Step, Zones of Regulation and Kelso’s Choice.

PM Session:

- Facilitated Sharing and Discussion: Curriculum, Lesson Plan Development and resources

- Classroom Management and aligning your curriculum to district goals and data will be explored.

- Participants will share best practices and network as part of this session.

Principals will participate in a re-callibration and inter-rater reliability activity. Additionally, important NYSED and ONC BOCES updates will be shared on topics such as APPR, new School Counselor Regulations, ESSA, and Computer Based Testing. Registration/breakfast 8:00-8:30.

5. February DASA Certification Training

Program: DASA

Dates: 2/27/2018

This 6-hour course is required for anyone pursuing a new certification, including educators applying for their professional certification. Upon completion, ONC BOCES will report your completion electronically.

6. OPALS User Group

Program: School Library System

Audience: School Librarians and library support staff

Dates: 2/28/2018

OPALS is an open source automated library system , developed by Media Flex, Inc., and used by the component districts of ONC BOCES. This meeting is for both current users of OPALS. Harry Chan, CEO, and John Schuster, an OPALS Librarian Consultant & Trainer, will lead this meeting and offer information on the newest updates. Users will have work time to implement new options. Lunch will be provided compliments of Media Flex

11. Janis Whitlock: Supporting Healthy Youth Development in our Schools in the Contemporary Age

Program: Instructional Support/School Improvement

Audience: School counselors, nurses, school psychologists, school social workers, teachers, administrators and other interested professionals. Schools are encouraged to bring members of their wellness team

AM Session:

Adolescents in the contemporary age: Self-injury, sexuality, and social media

- This session will explore three hot topics confronting those who care about, support, and live with young people: social media, sexuality, and self-injury. This section will highlight important take aways from current research in these areas with a focus on findings with strong implications for your work. It will be a mix of formal presentation and small group reflection.

PM Session:

Supporting Youth Development in our Schools and Communities

- Strategies to support youth connections to schools and caregiver outreach will be explored. Protocols and intervention strategies that support healthy social and emotional development. Specific resources pertaining to self-injury will be discussed. Participants will share practices they have in place and brainstorm others that integrate connections and build school climate to support health and wellness.

Community Resources Panel:

- Various community agencies will be in attendance to provide an overview of the resources and supports that are offered in the community to support youth work in the schools of Delaware, Otsego and Chenango County. We hope this conversation will strengthen the relationship between school and community to best serve youth.

Schools are encouraged to bring members of their wellness team.

12. THE BEST NEW CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR GRADES K-5

Program: School Library System

Audience: Teachers and School Librarians

In this engaging workshop, Kathleen Odean will introduce outstanding books published during the last year for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. She will present excellent new picture books, easy readers, fiction, nonfiction, biography, and poetry. They will include read-alouds, independent reading titles, and books for reading clubs and discussion groups. The workshop will offer practical ideas for promoting the books and integrating them into classrooms. Participants will learn about resources, websites, display ideas, and extension activities to use with these and other books. Each participant will receive an extensive handout of resource lists and curriculum-related booklists. The day will also incorporate time to share ideas with each other.

15. NY State PK-12 Science Learning Standards: Combining Content, Process, and Product to Foster Scientific Thinking

The NY State Science Learning Standards demand much more than delivering content. Along with content, teachers will need to consider alternative ways of leading students through the process of scientific reasoning as well as creating innovative student-centered products and projects that demonstrate critical thinking, design, and problem-solving.

This workshop is intended to support teachers seeking new ways to implement curriculum and innovate instruction in order reflect the goals of the new science standards.

17. Dignity Act Coordinator Training with Roseann Bayne

Program: DASA

Audience: Principals, DASA Coordinators

Dignity Act Coordinators play a vital role in setting the school-wide climate in relation to addressing how students and staff react to bullying.

DASA Coordinators need to be well-prepared to manage the demands of this important position and this training will provide them with the tools to be successful DASA Coordinators.

New York State defines the role of Dignity Act Coordinators to include the following duties:

- Understanding and applying distinctive knowledge of the differences between conflict and bullying
- Developing a flow complaint process
- Making complaint mechanisms confidential and readily available to all students and parents
- Being able to provide strategies for the mitigation of bullying to include both the student who bullied and the victim
- Completing all mandatory reporting requirements and providing support and training to staff and students
