12. Strengthening School to Home Communication

Overview of the Series - Join Staff Development Trainers Erica, Kristin & Melissa for an engaging series on strengthening communication skills with families and guardians. Let's face it - it's easier to text or email but to build sustainable relationships, we need to make the call! Here's a breakdown for each virtual, 45 minute session

"Call Me, Maybe” with Erica - In this session participants will learn self-management strategies to regulate the nervous system and prepare to make the call as well as what to do when emotions (yours or theirs) get heightened. We'll also dive into the science behind the nervousness and have some fun while developing these necessary skills.

"Say This” with Kristin - In this session participants will be introduced to a few different possible scripts to use when calling guardians. We will review this proactive step to solidifying relationships with guardians, and will talk through various scenarios to prepare for. Participants will conclude with the opportunity to practice, and ask questions.

"SOS” with Melissa - In this session, participants will learn strategies that can be used when a conversation doesn't go the way you hoped. Join Melissa to explore restorative language that can be used when repairing harm is your next step.

13. Smart Start Grant Year 5 Engineering for the Future Session A

This professional development institute focuses on providing immersive experiences for teachers to engage in the work of engineers in the laboratories where they conduct their research, as the foundation to plan and implement engineering learning experiences with their students over the following school year. Participants will learn first-hand about the Engineering practices in STEM. There will be opportunities for participants to reflect on their own classroom practice; identify current technological resources within their school and district; have collaborative conversations about implementation; and then apply this personal learning to developing classroom digitally-rich STEM experiences for their students. Instructional technology will be woven into the learning. Teachers that register for this session are commiting to the Summer Institute and 4 additional half day session during the school year, as well as coaching with UofR mentors.

In the research article "Feeling Safe at Work: Development and Validation of he Psychological Safety Inventory,” the authors write, "Psychological safety, defined as perceptions that an individual within a team is supported and feels safe to take interpersonal risks, voice opinions, and share ideas, is vital for organizational effectiveness.” Understanding this concept is a key to cultivating Brave Spaces and it is from these Brave Spaces that our culture can be strengthened. Join staff development trainer, Erica Ebert for an engaging and interactive online PD where we will explore: The four stages of safety and their impact on collaboration, compassion and culture throughout your District.

15. MTSS Development Series

A Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) is a framework that if implemented effectively will ensure student (and staff) success. This two day virtual session is for new teams and is a broad overview of the work. Session #1 will focus on "The What and Why of MTSS" AND "Tier 1," and session #2 will focus on "Tier 2 and Small Group Interventions," AND "Tier 3 Targeted Supports and Next Steps. " Each session includes specific work time for each team.

18. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Program: School Culture and Climate Grant

Audience: ALL

Dates: 7/10/2025 to 8/21/2025

MBSR is an 8-week evidence-based, experiential program designed to provide participants with intensive and systematic training in mindfulness meditation and movement practices, and integrating into one's daily life what is discovered and learned through the process of participating in the program. Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction (MBSR) is based on ancient contemplative practices integrated with western medical approaches by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. MBSR is an 8-week program of systematic training in mindfulness meditation employing both formal and informal practices. The experiential program harnesses inner resources and cultivates resilience. MBSR has been researched over 40 years and consistently delivers positive outcomes associated with increased self-awareness and emotional and attentional regulation. In addition, outcomes have included reductions in symptoms for various physical and behavioral health conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain, and hypertension.

19. Civic Ready by Design

Program: Professional Development

Audience: District and school leaders, civic readiness teams, curriculum coordinators, teachers involved in civic education or Seal of Civic Readiness implementation

Dates: 7/14/2025 to 8/8/2025

Build or strengthen your district's Seal of Civic Readiness plan through this self-paced, asynchronous professional learning experience. Designed as a choose-your-own-adventure, this flexible four-week workshop allows participants to select a path based on their district's current stage-whether building from the ground up or refining and scaling an existing plan. Participants will explore NYSED criteria, exemplars, equity-focused strategies, and actionable planning tools to design sustainable systems that expand access and increase the number of students earning the Seal.

The course culminates in a 30-minute coaching session to review district-specific plans and support next steps. This session supports system-level improvement by helping districts establish or enhance the structures and processes needed to implement the Seal of Civic Readiness with fidelity and long-term impact.

After you have completed the Asynchronous course, please schedule a required 30 minute feedback-coaching session between August 6th through August 22nd.

20. Mentoring for the 21st Century: A hybrid course

Audience: All General and Special Education Teachers, Practitioners, and Support Staff

Dates: 7/14/2025 to 8/5/2025

Teaching is a complex and challenging task. Having a mentor provides support with the content while helping the new practitioner acclimate to the school climate and culture. Mentoring relationships are central to the success of developing and retaining effective practitioners in our schools. Successful mentoring creates a collaborative instructional partnership by establishing the norm that learning is a lifelong process.

This hybrid course will provide strategies for mentor teachers to create a collaborative and trusting partnership with their mentees. Mentors will also be introduced to the NYS Mentoring Standards. Participants will complete the asynchronous work between July 14-28 and then attend the 3-hour in-person session August 5.

21. Building Your Tier 1 Instructional Best Practices Playbook

Audience: PK-12 Teachers and TAs

Join staff development trainer Hilary Chaya for an experiential and engaging workshop to increase your repertoire of Tier 1 classroom instructional practices. We will review the mindsets needed to shift instruction toward a more equitable and student-centered approach. Other points of entry for this work will be the NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) framework, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the NYS Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Benchmarks, and brain-based behavior management strategies - all under the umbrella of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Time will be allotted for collaboration with colleagues and development or revision of lesson/unit plans.

*Building and/or district MTSS Teams are welcome to attend together, but this is not required.**

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn about dyslexia and the normative and diagnostic assessments used for diagnosis and intervention of specific reading difficulties. There will be opportunities for participants to reflect on their own classroom practice; identify current technological resources within their school and district; have collaborative conversations about implementation; and then apply this personal learning to developing classroom digitally-rich STEM experiences for their students. Instructional technology will be woven into the learning. Teachers that register for this session are commiting to the Summer Institute and 4 additional half day session during the school year, as well as coaching with UofR mentors.

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) is a trauma-informed crisis prevention and management system. The TCIS system helps staff create a learning environment that decreases risk factors while increasing protective factors so both students and staff can feel safe. TCIS provides staff an understanding of trauma sensitive practices and skills (co-regulation) to help students learn how to regulate and manage their own emotions. These newly learned skills encourage a greater willingness and capacity for our students to learn.

TCIS helps participants and schools to:

82. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR is an 8-week evidence-based, experiential program designed to provide participants with intensive and systematic training in mindfulness meditation and movement practices, and integrating into one's daily life what is discovered and learned through the process of participating in the program. Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction (MBSR) is based on ancient contemplative practices integrated with western medical approaches by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. MBSR is an 8-week program of systematic training in mindfulness meditation employing both formal and informal practices. The experiential program harnesses inner resources and cultivates resilience. MBSR has been researched over 40 years and consistently delivers positive outcomes associated with increased self-awareness and emotional and attentional regulation. In addition, outcomes have included reductions in symptoms for various physical and behavioral health conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain, and hypertension.

From Trauma to Healing; Building a Trauma Sensitive Approach to Service Delivery

There is a growing awareness that trauma is pervasive and that the impact of trauma is often deep and life shaping. Trauma and toxic stress are often at the center of a person's mental health challenges, substance use, physical health issues and/or involvement with the justice system. This means, whether or not it is fully recognized, staff at our school districts are working with survivors of trauma.

Creating a trauma-informed system requires not only understanding the impact of trauma, but implementing changes in the service delivery that align with the five core principles of trauma-centered safety: safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment.

LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling)

LETRS comprehensive professional development empowers teachers to understand the science behind how students learn to read and why some students struggle. LETRS participants will deepen their knowledge of the what, why and how of scientifically based reading instruction - while sharpening their ability to diagnose why students are struggling and how to provide proven interventions. LETRS 3rd Edition professional development is delivered in a series of units that address each essential component of reading instruction and the foundational concepts that that link each component. The full LETRS course is two volumes. This 4 day series will address volume 2, units 5-8: Teaching vocabulary, language and reading comprehension, and writing.

Participants will receive access to print materials and a one year online license. Each of the session dates will be with a LETRS consultant. It is recommended that in between sessions, participants complete online practice, assigned readings and classroom applications. Districts can provide their participants credit for the asynchronous work at their own discretion.

• Toward the End: Participants will share their drafted games for feedback and game iterations, refining their creations based on constructive input.

We will engage in relevant discussions about best practices for physical education and health, share instructional strategies with our colleagues, as well as offer facilitated planning time for curriculum work, course development, and other district initiatives. District P.E. and Health teams are encouraged to attend together, but this is not required.
This session will provide an overview of the Science of Reading, including theories of learning to read and how to interpret and analyze research articles. We will discuss the key elements of effective interventions according to research. The session will also address how the Science of Reading is applied to a multi-tiered system of support with practical solutions for increasing student reading outcomes. Participants will have opportunities to apply the session content to their context and curriculum. We encourage school teams and/or individuals from multiple disciplines to attend including: administrators, school psychologists, reading teachers, classroom teachers, speech and language pathologists, special education teachers, and other school professionals.

The goal of this "strand” is to create each year a cadre of 60 "unique” K-8 teachers that will support the implementation of the new NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards while also reinforcing an effective use of instructional technology. Teachers that register for this session are commiting to the Fall Institute and 4 additional half day session during the school year, and PLC meetings with UofR mentor, concluding with a presentation of their work in March. In addition to the synchronous online work, there will be asynchronous work that will be assigned.

98. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention 2 edition

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) is a trauma-informed crisis prevention and management system. The TCIS system helps staff create a learning environment that decreases risk factors while increasing protective factors so both students and staff can feel safe. TCIS provides staff an understanding of trauma sensitive practices and skills (co-regulation) to help students learn how to regulate and manage their own emotions. These newly learned skills encourage a greater willingness and capacity for our students to learn.

TCIS helps participants and schools to:

◉ Create a trauma-sensitive environment where students and adults are safe and feel safe within their roles as a staff member
◉ Pro-actively prevent and/or deescalate potential crisis situations with the students they work with
◉ Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to students and staff
