Last year's session focused on phonemic proficiency. This year will focus on morphology. Some SoR PD required as a prerequisite. Attendance at last year's event is not mandatory.
The most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores revealed that only 31% of 4th graders are at or above proficient in reading. Only 9% are considered advanced. However, research indicates 95% of first graders can become proficient given direct, explicit instruction by highly knowledgeable professionals using curriculum based on the evidence from reading science. With 60% of our fourth graders functioning at only a basic level of proficiency, we need all hands on deck! School librarians are in a unique position to see learners from multiple grades, often over a period of several years. They interface regularly with the educators tasked with directly teaching reading and can support that work by adding decodable text to complement what is used in the classroom and by incorporating knowledge of English as a morphophonemic language system in fun and engaging ways for all ages. Join us as we continue exploring what makes a text "decodable" and consider what literacy leadership can look like in your school's context.
Part I is not a required prerequisite but some prior training regarding the Science of Reading is helpful. NOTE: Snow Date of 1/16/26 is IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION. Will be communicated if necessary.
