4. Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management Book Study *CTLE Approved*

Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 7/1/2025 to 8/3/2025

ClosedStarting Today
Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and more wide-reaching.
In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, longtime educators and best-selling authors Dominique Smith, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. After a comprehensive overview of the roots of the restorative practices movement in schools, the authors explain how to: establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skills; develop a non-confrontational rapport with even the most challenging students; and implement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship building and mutual understanding over finger-pointing and retribution.

Rewards and punishments may help to maintain order in the short term, but they're at best superficially effective and at worst counterproductive. This book will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement.

Participants must obtain a copy of Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management ISBN # 1416620621 and have a device to access the Schoology platform.

20. Developing Mathematical Reasoning: Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms Grades K-12 BOOK STUDY *CTLE Approved*

Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 7/28/2025 to 8/31/2025

Closed
Memorization tricks and algorithms meant to make math "easier" are full of traps that sacrifice long-term student growth for short-lived gains. Students and teachers alike have been led to believe that they've learned more and more math, but in reality, their brains never get any stronger. Using these tricks may make facts easier to memorize in isolation, but that very disconnect distorts the reality of math.

Developing Mathematical Reasoning: Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms emphasizes the importance of teaching students increasingly sophisticated mathematical reasoning and understanding underlying concepts rather than relying on a set rule for solving problems. Author Pam Harris argues that teaching real math―math that is free of distortions-will reach more students more effectively and result in deeper understanding and longer retention. This book is about teaching undistorted math using the kinds of mental reasoning that mathematicians do.

Program: Model Schools CTLE #755

Dates: 2/1/2026 to 2/23/2026

New
This four week completely asynchronous workshop will help teachers explore programming options for their students. We will look at three web based programming sites, all of which are EdLaw2d compliant: Scratch, Microsoft MakeCode and PencilCode. After having a chance to explore all three programs, participants will be asked to draft a plan to use at least one with students.
Learning to code can be hard and setting up a coding course even more so! Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science Academy makes learning to code and teaching coding easy! This curriculum is already being implemented in some of our area schools and students are having great success.

Get ready to meet the New York State Computer Science & Digital Fluency Standards for computational thinking through teaching your students Python. The basics of this course will teach you as an instructor how to draw images, create animations, and make simple games. You will be introduced to a self-paced, online curriculum that can be used on any device that leads to certification in Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Academy. With this certification, you will be given access to a complete curriculum to use with students including a defined scope and sequence, an online IDE (integrated development environment) for students to program in, and a portal to monitor student progress.

This workshop will introduce participants to the curriculum and start the professionals on their path towards CSO certification. To receive certification, teachers will need to complete 4 units in Computer Science Academy CSO by the end of the academic year. While one unit may be completed during this in-person day, participants will need to work on their own time to complete the rest of the units as supported by our helpdesk of certified trainers.

Participants will receive 20 hours of CTLE credit 6 in-person and 14 online, asynchronous hours.

55. Understanding and Dealing with Challenging Student Behavior *CTLE Approved*

Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 3/24/2026 to 3/25/2026

In this two-day workshop, participants are provided with information regarding the various types of emotional problems/behaviors symptomatic of particular disturbances. Many times children do not choose to act inappropriately, but rather, can't control or manage their behavior/emotions without outside intervention. Participants will learn how children and youth are affected by brain development and the trauma and stress that can be part of that growth.

Participants will also become familiar with the characteristic behaviors of Disruptive Behavior and Personality Disorders to begin to recognize the need for a "prescriptive" approach as the success of interventions is linked to their efficacy with a particular type of behavior. Participants are made aware of the range of alternative intervention strategies and behavior management programs through an exploration of the cyclical nature of conflict; demonstrating how the way the student perceives, thinks, and feels is manifested in behavior, evokes a response from an adult/peer, and begins a cycle of escalation.

Behavioral first aid strategies are also introduced as ways of labeling what positive interventions can look like when addressing student behavior. By developing a shared vocabulary of names/labels to the techniques and examining when they should be used and when they are contraindicated, start can begin to plan interventions thereby increasing their effectiveness.

Registration: 8:15-8:30 a.m. ~ Session: 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT-10

56. Keeping Everyone Safe *CTLE Approved*

Program: School Improvement CTLE #755

Dates: 3/26/2026 to 3/27/2026

One of the primary concerns staff members have is how to work with a student who is, or has the potential to become physically aggressive.

The primary goal of this two-day program is to equip staff with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to avoid and de-escalate crisis situations without the need for physical intervention. However, since physical intervention can be deemed necessary for the safety and well-being of the students, staff and environment, participants will also be taught non-aggressive intervention techniques.

This program includes: sources of aggressive behavior, stages of crisis development, keeping others safe, supportive verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies, physical responses to attack, supportive physical intervention and transport techniques, crisis team development, roles, and communication, talking with students after a crisis, and development of policies and procedural safeguards.

Registration: 8:15-8:30 a.m. ~ Session: 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
