Research shows that physical activity supports memory, attention, and executive functioning by anchoring ideas in action. This session introduces teachers to movement-based learning using pre-made activities built with Unruly Splats-interactive floor tiles that respond to steps, jumps, and patterns. Splats also support integration of the NYS CSDL Standards: students can build, test, fix, and improve their own games in a low-stakes, playful environment.
Participants will begin with ready-made games-math challenges, vocabulary warm-ups, science simulations, and SEL check-ins-to see how movement boosts engagement and conceptual understanding across grade levels.
Examples of how Unruly Splats can be used across the curriculum:
- K-2: patterning, counting, sound/light sequences, and simple cause-and-effect games
- 3-5: multi-step challenges, math fact fluency, vocabulary review, and turn-taking games
- 6-8: content-based movement routines, data-collection challenges, probability or coordinate-plane activities, and student-created logic puzzles
- All Grades: SEL check-ins, energizers, and quick assessment routines
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to modify existing games, design new ones, and adapt movement-based routines to fit diverse developmental stages from early grades through the middle level.
