This course is designed to provide teachers with a deeper understanding of how best to support students as they approach the task of responding to text-dependent analysis prompts which appear on the PSSA in Grades 4 through 8. The PA Cores Standards identify text-dependent analysis as the ability to "draw on evidence from literary or information texts to support analysis, reflection, and research" (CC.1.4.5). Current resources from PDE, developed in partnership with the Center for Assessment, will be explored. ed.

Over the span of 7 sessions, participants will further their exploration and questions related to bullying in school as well as how to provide appropriate assistance and interventions that extend from the classroom to school-wide, parent and community components. 19. Positive Behavior Support for Students with Autism

Positive Behavior Support for Students with Autism is a course designed to integrate research-based behavioral strategies and a Positive Behavior Support framework to assist students with Autism in inclusive settings. This three credit online course is designed for Teachers K-12, and Special Education Teachers. Over the span of 7 weeks, participants will explore ideas and questions related to the Response to Intervention Model and School-wide Positive Behavior Support and the relationship between these principles and the inclusive environment in which students with Autism participate. They will better understand the critical aspects of how the law including NCLB and IDEA influences the basic foundations of establishing a classroom framework that enhances the strengths of all students. The participants will be able to create a learning environment using researched based positive behavioral interventions which will foster positive, inclusive, learning settings emphasizing cognitive, behavior, language, physical, and social domains.

Instructional strategies utilized in this course will promote active modeling experiences and will provide an integrated approach to content understanding and pedagogical applications. Participants will reflect on teaching and learning through cooperative learning experiences and individualized journaling. Teachers will gain practical experience in designing performance assessment products, performance task scenarios (GRASP), language tasks, and analytical rubrics to measure standards-based content and 21st century learning and innovation skills. Each participant will leave the online course with a detailed plan for a PBL project.

Session will include the following topics: trauma-informed practices, how to use data to drive induction, Act 13: Educator Effectiveness, how to develop a professional network, professional ethics, effective parent communication, and social emotional learning/self care for educators. One-Hour Virtual Workshops: Dates/Times are to be determined Inductees are required to attend monthly, one-hour virtual workshops (November through May). Sessions will include the following topics: behavior management, strategies for working with diverse learners and cultural awareness, special education/implementing the IEP, English Language Learners, technology integration, formative assessment strategies, and educator wellness. It is required that mentors meet with inductees following each one-hour virtual workshop and complete the "Mentor/Inductee- Summary of Learning”. It is requested that mentors meet with the NEIU Induction Team for two, one-hour virtual check-in sessions (September and January). YEAR TWO In-Person, Kick-off Session (required): Dates/Times are to be determined Inductees are required to attend one, in-person, kick-off session. Autism: From the Beginning is a course designed to investigate current theories, models, philosophies, laws and litigation associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This course will discuss the characteristics of students with Autism and their effects on an individual's life from onset to adulthood. This three credit online course is designed for Early Intervention teachers and specialists, Teachers K-12, and Special Education Teachers. Over the span of 7 weeks, particpants will explore ideas and questions related to the diagnosis of Autism and the impact it has on student's education and transition to adulthood. This course will highlight major models, theories and philosophies that have formed the basis for thinking associated with the Autism Spectrum. State laws will be reviewed to enhance a greater understanding of assessment, educational placement, behavior management and educational programming. Characteristics will be defined and discussed through typical and atypical human development models as it relates to Autism. Discussions of research-based programming related to diagnosis and identification of students with Autism will lead to improved educational environments for these students

34. Internet Safety in the Digital Era

In this course for school leaders, teachers, and administrators, participants will explore specific strategies for creating a safe environment for students when they access the Internet. They will learn essential information about the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), including compliance requirements for schools and districts. Participants will also become familiar with the ways that Web 2.0 technologies, which allow for more collaboration and social networking than was previously possible through the Internet, are changing the way that students and teachers interact online. Special attention will be paid to the safety and health issues that these technologies present, such as cyberbullying. Finally, participants will learn how to make sure that school and district Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) address these challenges while teaching students how to act as responsible "digital citizens,” helping them to explore Web 2.0 tools safely for educational purposes. Goals and Products During this course, participants will learn skills and strategies to:

• Refine their understanding of specific options, technological or otherwise, for protecting children when they access the Internet over a school-based or statewide educational network;

• Understand current federal policy regarding how schools protect their students when they go online;

• Consider approaches for advancing digital citizenship of teachers and students and promoting the practice of online safety;

• Address instances of cyber-bullying in the classroom and online; and

• Make sure that current AUPs are up to date and address collaborative and social networking tools.

Participants will gain hands-on experience developing collaborative, inquiry-based projects that support their curricular goals. Participants will learn to blend PBL and standards-based design strategies to create curriculum units that enhance student learning.

This 2-day workshop develops the knowledge and skill required to provide immediate mental health crisis interventions to the students, staff, and school community members who have been simultaneously exposed to an acute traumatic stressor. The knowledge and skill developed within this session also help to build a bridge to the psychotherapeutic and trauma informed mental health response sometimes required to address challenges associated with trauma exposure. This workshop will serve as an initial training for NEIU Flight Team members.
