This book brings together leading experts on the key components of literacy to help K-6 teachers design and target structured literacy interventions for particular student profiles. Chapters identify effective features of instruction for supporting phonological awareness, basic and multisyllabic word decoding, spelling, reading fluency, vocabulary, oral and reading comprehension, and written expression, especially for at-risk readers and those with disabilities. Participants will receive a copy of the book prior to the first meeting date.

We are excited to offer an opportunity to discover the Feifer Assessment of Reading (FAR). The FAR is a comprehensive assessment tool designed to identify the underlying cognitive and linguistic processes that support proficient reading skills. Understanding how young children learn and acquire basic reading skills from a brain-based educational perspective provides the foundation for determining appropriate interventions. This workshop will provide an overview of the FAR assessment by exploring the basic components of administration, scoring, and alignment of the assessment findings to appropriate interventions.

The FAM is a comprehensive assessment tool designed to examine the underlying neurodevelopmental processes that support the acquisition of proficient math skills. It is unique in that it helps to identify specific subtypes of dyscalculia. Understanding how young children learn and acquire basic mathematics skills from a brain-based educational perspective provides the foundation for determining appropriate interventions. This workshop will provide an overview of the FAM assessment by exploring the basic components of administration, scoring, and alignment of the assessment findings to appropriate interventions.

The REWARDS family of reading and writing intervention materials is specifically designed for adolescent struggling learners in grades 4-12, with every instructional activity backed by sound research foundation and evidence to support its effectiveness. REWARDS Intermediate (grades 4-6) and REWARDS Secondary (grades 7-12) provide strategies for reading long, multisyllabic words to improve comprehension and fluency, giving students the tools to access grade-level content. NEIU 19 is pleased to announce the start of the NEIU 19 Math Network. This network is specifically designed for math teachers to discuss instruction and best practices. Our first network event will take place on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. The Network will be held at the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19 Administrative Building located in Archbald, PA. Our initial Math Network will be the first in a series featuring Pennsylvania Department of Education Math Content Advisor, Kevin Mauro. This session will provide participants with instruction on the SAS system to support curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Program outcomes: Participants will gain an understanding of the SAS System Participants will be able to navigate the SAS assessment center and how to use it to support classroom instruction Participants will explore available instructional resources from PDE partners There is no cost to participate in the NEIU Math Network. This course will examine the theories, principals, and practices that assist English learners in achieving academic proficiency in the content area. Planning standards-based instruction and adapting instruction in the content area is emphasized. Teachers will be able to demonstrate knowledge of their ELs and the role of individual characteristics in the process and outcome of language learning. Drawing upon this knowledge performance-based measures to assess ELs discrete and integrated ability to use grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing to communicate.

The goal of the Structured Literacy Training-of-Trainers workshop is to assist districts in implementing the new Chapter 49 Guidelines for Structured Literacy. Individuals registered for this half-day program will become Structured Literacy trainers for their district. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the training, discuss presentation techniques, ask questions, and prepare for in-house training. This one-day training focuses on prevention and preparedness within a comprehensive school safety framework. Learn how to establish and sustain comprehensive physical and psychological school safety efforts. This workshop addresses critical components needed to develop, implement, and evaluate safety and crisis teams and plans and conduct building vulnerability assessments. School personnel and community provider roles are integrated to provide school-based crisis preparedness and response activities. Additional topics include: media/social media, communication, reunification, students with special needs, culture, and memorials. Acquire skills to help improve school climate, student resilience, and the crisis response capabilities of school personnel. Using updated research and strategies, this workshop makes a clear connection between ongoing crisis prevention, mitigation, protection, response, and recovery.

101. ESL 2: Developing Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity

This course will provide an examination of theory, diversity, and pedagogy constructs, for explicit applications to practice in classrooms with English Learners. The historical exploration of immigration, cultural perspectives, and teaching practices that demonstrate and explicate the interconnectedness of culture and cognition are provided. By examining the background of English learners and their cultures, a framework for creating a culturally responsive classroom environment is developed. Participants will develop an awareness of how their own culture impacts their views of teaching, learning, and classroom expectations: explore the varied roles of teacher, parent, and student in terms of cultural and educational expectations: and understand that acculturation is nit only a complex process, but a matter of individual choice.
