5. Reading Interventions 101 (Westside Location Option 3)

Westside Location: Isacc Tripp Elementary School Teachers from Isacc Tripp, Francis Williard, and Charles Sumner Elementary will be allowed to attend. Attend during professional development day, 8 am-11 am on 5/20/25 This mini-course helps educators understand what makes a successful reader and how to support struggling readers with appropriate interventions. Participants will learn about various types of interventions, analyze student data to identify supports for skill development, and create an instructional plan for intervention using evidence-based reading strategies. Participants also will walk away with an intervention toolkit and a plan to use with their students.

Do you have students that can read fluently but when asked to retell the story have little or no response? If the answer is yes, then Reading Comprehension Instruction(RCI) is the course for you! We will explore strategies for increasing comprehension of both narrative and expository texts, vocabulary, as well as how to help students self-monitor comprehension and apply appropriate "fix-up” strategies when comprehension is not achieved. Practice in using instructional strategies and examples of student work are embedded in the course.

Therapeutic Aggression Control Techniques (TACT2) is designed to help staff better understand and manage disruptive, destructive, and even dangerous issues that may arise when caring for youth and young adults with emotional and behavioral problems. 13. ESL 1: Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language

This course is the basic introduction to ESL Program Specialist Certification. It will include five domains of teaching English learners:culture, language, planning instruction, assessment, and professionalism. Emphasis is placed on the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) teaching standards and English Language Development Standards. Teachers will examine research-based practices in relation to the five domains and identify their role as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher.

14. ESL 2: Developing Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity

This course will provide an examination of theory, diversity, and pedagogy constructs, for explicit applications to practice in classrooms with English Learners. The historical exploration of immigration, cultural perspectives, and teaching practices that demonstrate and explicate the interconnectedness of culture and cognition are provided. By examining the background of English learners and their cultures, a framework for creating a culturally responsive classroom environment is developed. Participants will develop an awareness of how their own culture impacts their views of teaching, learning, and classroom expectations: explore the varied roles of teacher, parent, and student in terms of cultural and educational expectations: and understand that acculturation is nit only a complex process, but a matter of individual choice.

15. ESL 5: Assessment and Support

This course will allow teachers gain exposure to the tool necessary to be able to access English learners appropriately and in a timely way. The course will offer knowledge on benchmarks for different proficiency levels. Assessing English learners can be a challenge to not only teachers but also the students themselves. As ESL students in K-12 are taught English, proper instruments need to be in place to access student progress. Tools should be appropriate, and take into account the proficiency level of the learner.

17. STEELS School Leader Summer Institute

School and system leaders play a critical role in the successful implementation of STEELS standards. This STEELS School Leader Summer Institute is designed to help leaders support high-quality STEELS instruction, strategic planning, and teacher supervision. Sessions focus on creating inquiry-rich learning environments, evaluating student engagement, and implementing best practices for instructional leadership. These learning opportunities equip school leaders with the tools and frameworks needed to drive systemic change and support teachers in delivering rigorous, three-dimensional instruction. Held 2 days over the summer, July 16 and August 18, school leaders will explore how to align their district's vision for STEELS and discover practical strategies to support teachers and students in implementing these powerful, future-ready frameworks. Topics include: leadership, phenomena-based learning, 3-dimensional learning and assessments, teacher coaching, and integrating STEELS into course design.

This course will examine the theories, principals, and practices that assist English learners in achieving academic proficiency in the content area. Planning standards-based instruction and adapting instruction in the content area is emphasized. Teachers will be able to demonstrate knowledge of their ELs and the role of individual characteristics in the process and outcome of language learning. Drawing upon this knowledge performance-based measures to assess ELs discrete and integrated ability to use grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing to communicate.
This course is geared toward equipping ESL teachers with the necessary tools to give ESL students the support they need while they undergo the challenges of transition. Issues that may arise concerning the support of students in the classroom, school, and the community will be addressed. Become a policy advocate for the profession and their students, ESL teachers must be able to take full advantage of professional resources and relationships at local, regional, and national levels.

OGAP Multiplicative Reasoning Professional Development for 3-5 classroom teachers, special educators, math interventionists, and math instructional leaders. For students to become strong multiplicative reasoners they must interact with a range of problem contexts, contextual situations, and problem structures. The CCSSM specifically identifies problem contexts at targeted grades on a progression from equal groups and measures, and area situations at grades 2 and 3 to measurement conversions, area, volume, multiplicative patterns, and multiplicative comparison problem situations at grades 4 and 5, and unit rates at grade 6. This progression, among other things, is designed to prepare students to engage in proportional situations using multiplicative reasoning. This 4-day professional development includes 2 days of follow-up coaching support at the NEIU with OGAP representatives.

The OGAP Fraction professional development is divided into 2 parts: foundational knowledge; and, knowledge about operations with fractions. Each session intentionally intertwines aspects of content, knowledge of mathematics education research, analysis of evidence in student's work with instructional decision making and analysis of instructional materials in light of math education research. OGAP Proportional Professional Development for Upper Elementary-Algebra teachers, special educators, math interventionists, and math instructional leaders. For students to become strong in their application of ratios, rates, and proportional relationships they must interact with a range of problem contexts and problem structures. Beginning in grade 4 the CCSSM engages students in multiplicative change problems which set the foundation for proportional thinking. In grade 6 students focus on understanding ratios and unit rates and applying these concepts in problems involving unit pricing, constant rate of speed, measure conversions, and percent. In grade 7 this work is extended to proportional relationships and solving multi-step proportion problems, percent problems, scale problems, and developing probability. In grade 8 students study the connections between proportional relationships, graphs, and linear equations including understanding of similarity. This 4-day professional development includes 2 days of follow-up coaching support at the NEIU with OGAP representatives.
