For educators of middle and high school students, there's no denying the importance of reading for student success. As a result, it's only right to make sure that education programs are based on the most up-to-date science of reading principles. What works for an elementary student will not necessarily work for those slightly older - and specific adjustments may be needed. This workshop aims to examine the "do's and don'ts" when teaching reading to students in grades 6-12 within the context of scientific research by reviewing positive behaviors (what you should do).

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world and is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties. The session will provide participants with strategies to shift practices to those that align with the research in order to improve student outcomes, as well as focus on strategies for small group instruction and learning centers.
