Dyslexia, the most recognized of reading problems, is a neurological disorder that is often characterized by difficulties in recognizing and decoding words, leading to lower comprehension and fluency. Although there is no exact count, it is estimated that one in ten people may be afflicted with some form of dyslexia.

Governor Christie signed legislation that prominently recognizes dyslexia in state statute and regulation, making it a requirement for districts to deal with this disability. A definition of dyslexia must now be specifically written into special education code and a yearly 2-hour professional development requirement for dyslexia is now mandated for all teachers in grades pre-K through grade 3, special education, reading and ESL teachers, reading specialists, learning disabilities teacher consultants, and speech-language specialists.

This two-hour webinar will provide participating administrators, pre-K to 3 educators, Special Education supervisors, and Child Study Team members with detailed information about this legislation, citing the specificity and requisites that impact the governance and operation of all school districts in New Jersey. This is a comprehensive training designed for districts whose Multilingual Learner populations are experiencing growth. It includes an overview of topics such as ML and immigrant rights, ML demographics in the US, an overview of the WIDA ACCESS Assessment and Can Do Descriptors, and the basics of language acquisition. We take a look at translanguaging, its implementation in the classroom and its benefits for Multilingual Learners. We will discuss strategies and activities that make effective use of student languages and the pedagogy of translanguaging.

Throughout the training, teachers will have a forum to share and discuss strategies that have worked for them as well as design a plan to incorporate new strategies into their instructional practice. We will look at various strategies that equip students with valuable self-monitoring and accountability tools. Ozobots are miniature robots that can follow lines and respond to colors, making them ideal tools for introducing programming concepts to students of all ages.

During this workshop, participants will: Gain a solid understanding of coding fundamentals, discover the Ozoblockly programming environment, engage in hands-on activities, and foster creativity and critical thinking. We will cover basic programming concepts such as commands, loops, conditionals, and variables. You'll leave the workshop with practical ideas and resources to implement immediately in your classrooms.

No prior experience with coding or robotics is necessary to participate in this workshop. The expanded version of this very successful and popular workshop will provide a full day of Spice Language Arts training, demonstrating how to identify and apply the skills needed to teach and enhance writing abilities at the elementary and middle school level for NJSLA.  Language Arts teachers, special education teachers, and ELL teachers will learn a variety of techniques designed through years of practical use.  Spice strategies have been successful in improving state assessment scores.  After review of numerous state standards, participants will learn and practice unique assessment tools, skill application strategies for NJSLA prompts, and time testing awareness with encouragement tips.  The instructor will demonstrate close reading and modeled writing strategies, unique skill teaching techniques, and application of common core and New Jersey's core curriculum language arts skills used in NJSLA essays.  Written expression including chunking and conferencing will be covered extensively.  Join us for an engaging day of Spice writing and you'll be prepared to help your students become better writers.

How Climate Change Impacts the Pinelands will focus on New Jersey Pinelands and the threats of climate change on the ecosystem. Topics that will be addressed include specific challenges - increased wildfires, increased invasion of insect species, instability in forest composition, the sea level rise pushing brackish water inland, and change in water quality - along with mediation efforts. There will also be a discussion on the exponential growth of invasive species. Data literacy will be used to understand the effects of observable data gathered during the workshop. Dr. Tait Chirenje will lead this workshop initially in a face-to-face format. The workshop will be focused on the incorporation of science and math and will also incorporate computer science and design thinking.

The Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway is a conference where educators hone their creative writing skills and expand their teaching strategies. Now celebrating its 31st anniversary, the Winter Getaway is known for challenging and supportive workshops featuring small classes led by award-winning professionals. Faculty include Jan Beatty, Nicole Callihan, Jiordan Castle, Tyrese L. Coleman, Libby Cudmore, Celeste Doaks, Hugo dos Santos, R.G. Evans, Luray Gross, Lois Marie Harrod, Sam Heaps, Le Hinton, Anndee Hochman, Heather Lanier, Davon Loeb, Peter E. Murphy, Sham-e-Ali Nayeem, Christine E. Salvatore, and Gretna Wilkinson.

Participants will engage with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards by practicing different types of writing for different purposes and audiences; and have the opportunity to choose from workshops including fiction, playwriting, songwriting, memoir, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Each workshop offers craft discussion, writing prompts, writing time, feedback, motivation, and inspiration.

The conference was founded by veteran teacher Peter E. Murphy in the belief that when writers leave behind the distractions of their busy lives to gather in an encouraging community, they are able to make important breakthroughs in their art. The author of a dozen books, Peter has received numerous awards and fellowships.

The CORE2 is specifically designed for high school teachers in mind. The 3-day series will provide an overview of the NJSLS Computer Science standards, unplugged computer science, physical computing, data, networks and artificial intelligence and how they each impact the classroom. The CORE2 has a deeper focus on physical computing where we will explore sphero bolts, micro:bits, hummingbird kits, air:bits, MakeBots, and Raspberry Pi kits. All items are available through the lending library once you have completed the workshop. Join us to learn more about how you can integrate computer science in your classroom!

Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the region, become part of a PLC with coaching and support, hands on experience with grant supported resources, access to the lending library and more!
