1. Special Education Mediation for Families - VIRTUAL

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Special education mediation is a resource for parents of children with disabilities and school representatives to work out differences in a collaborative way. This training provides information on the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and New York State Education Department (NYSED) Special Education Mediation to encourage the use of this voluntary process statewide.  This training will include but is not limited to the following topics: The Basics of IDEA, Resolving Disputes Under IDEA and IDEA Special Education Basic Mediation Procedures.

2. Diploma and Credential Options for Students with Disabilities

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 10/22/2025

This training examines the different diploma and credential options that are available to all students. Participants will understand the
- credit requirements for graduation in NYS
- Multiple pathways to graduation, 4 + 1 option requirements
- appeal eligibility criteria
- safety net options for students with disabilities
- exiting credentials available in NYS and the requirements for each
This training is ideal for school counselors, administrators, school psychologists, special education and general education teachers, other related service providers, families, and students.

This training describes the ways in which a public health crisis, school crisis and/or types of civic unrest may be significant sources of stress and/or trauma for the students whom we support. Participants will receive a basic explanation of the biological, cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects of trauma on student development and the ways they in turn affect a student's academic and behavioral functioning in the classroom. We will also explore how to use the data, systems, and practices components of a multi-tiered systems approach to behavior to provide differentiated evidence-based supports.

This training is intended to assist parents, family members, and Educational Organizations (EOs) in understanding the special education process delineated in education laws and regulations; knowing the roles and responsibilities of the various members of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) and Committee on Special Education (CSE), particularly that of the Parent Member; and learning the techniques and strategies that are necessary for becoming an active participant in CPSE and CSE meetings.

TARGET AUDIENCES: Family members who are interested in becoming or who are already a CPSE and/or CSE Parent Member or are interested in learning more about the special education process. Additionally, Special education administrators, special education and general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related services professionals, transition specialists, school counselors, agency/community service providers, and CPSE Chairpersons, may attend to better understand the parent member's role.

The Early Intervention (EI) to Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) training provides a foundational understanding of the transition process for professionals as well as parents. Participants will learn about:
-the role of the Early Intervention Program and the Committee on Preschool Special Education as it relates to the transition process
- what to expect in the transition process
- timelines and vocabulary
- the role of the family/guardian, the provider(s), the County and the CPSE
- the importance of collaboration and communication throughout the process
This training is ideal for: Special education administrators, CPSE Chairpersons, preschool special education evaluators, special education and general education teachers, early childhood professionals, related services professionals, municipality representatives, agency/community service providers or case managers and Early Intervention service coordinators. Parents are always welcome!

Specially designed instruction (SDI) is the teaching strategies and methods used by teachers to instruct students who receive special education services.
In this training participants will: ● understand the concepts of specially designed instruction. ● understand that there is both federal and state regulation around SDI. ● be able to examine what SDI might look like in the classroom and in the home. ● understand their value as engaged meaningful partners in the special education process and education of their child.

7. State Performance Plan Indicator 8 Targeted Skills Group - Virtual - Specific Districts Only

Dates: 12/10/2025 to 3/11/2026

NOTE: This Targeted Skills Group is open to Auburn, Mexico, Onondaga, Solvay, Cato Meridian and LaFayette Districts only.
As part of this Targeted Skills Group districts will understand:
-what SPP 8 is and what their responsibilities are during their reporting cycle
-what the Parental Involvement Survey is and best practice for distribution and methods to improve response rates
-how the data is reported and how they may use the data to improve their practice 
-how family engagement policies, procedures and practices can improve outcomes for students with disabilities

8. What is the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for Preschool

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 12/10/2025

FOR PRESCHOOL: Develop an understanding of a quality Preschool IEP designed to provide preschool students who have disabilities access to the age appropriate activities and curriculum. Focus will include present levels of performance, management needs, effect of student needs on participation, goals and objectives, supplementary aids/accommodations and progress monitoring.

9. What is the IEP for Families of School Age Students - Virtual

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 1/7/2026

Participants will:
•Understand the CSE process and the parent/guardian role in the development of the IEP
•Identify the different components of the IEP
•Discuss how to develop relationships and practices that build home-school collaboration and support the student with a disability
•Participate in the transition planning process for students beginning the year they turn 15"

Schools and districts have a responsibility under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to provide education to students with disabilities alongside children without disabilities to the maximum extent appropriate. This is referred to as Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
In this workshop we will define LRE and the goal of special education in preparing students for living, learning and earning. Participants will learn skills for participating in LRE discussions at the Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meeting. We will identify opportunities within the IEP development process for participants to ask questions about LRE and special education programs and services.

In this training we will walk through the Family Guide to Transition Planning-Preparing Students with Disabilities for Life After High School to assist families in understanding the transition planning process specifically from high school to life after high school. When families are knowledgeable about and invited to participate in the transition planning process, students with disabilities experience improved post-school outcomes in the areas of employment, postsecondary education, and independent living.

12. Special Education 101: Training of the Parent Member - VIRTUAL

Student participation in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) planning process improves both in-school and post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. When parents, school staff, and those participating in the IEP planning process prepare student's effectively to participate in their Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings the students learn self-advocacy skills and take an active role in their own IEP development. During this training parents will engage in strength based activities as well gain strategies to involve their child in the IEP Process.

16. CPSE to CSE for Parents - VIRTUAL

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 3/25/2026

This workshop will help professionals to understand the transition process and their roles as a member of the transition team. They will also learn how to help parents to understand the difference between services in CPSE and CSE and to understand the purpose of an IEP. This session is ideal for CPSE/CSE chairpersons, preschool providers, school administrators and community agencies who support preschool families.

17. Preschool Special Education Process @ OCM BOCES

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 4/21/2026

The Preschool Special Education Process training is designed to gain a foundational understanding of the CPSE Process. Participants will:
- Understand the role of the Chairperson, the Preschool Provider, the Evaluator, the County and the parents as members of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)
- Learn about early childhood transitions, continuum of services and the requirements of the committee
- Develop practices which encourage parental involvement and cultivate home-school partnerships
This training is ideal to engage preschool partners in dialogue and partnership for the educational benefit of preschool students with disabilities, including: special education administrators, CPSE Chairpersons, preschool special education evaluators, special education and general education teachers, early childhood professionals, paraprofessionals, related services professionals, municipality representatives, agency/community service providers or case managers.
