    Audience: PreK-12 School Librarians

    Dates: 2/29/2024

Have you ever wished you could have more conversations with other school librarians? Have you looked for a supportive community to share the challenges and joys of being a school librarian at your grade level? Do you want to talk to your colleagues that "get it”?

    This group is for you!

In LiNC, you will be among friends. We will foster a supportive, collaborative, joyful community of school librarians in Monroe One and 2 BOCES and the Genesee Valley BOCES regions. Throughout this twenty-week Schoology course, some discussions will be K-12 and others will be split by grade level. We will also host periodic Zoom meetings where we can put faces to names and have live discussions.

This work will be asynchronous, with weekly discussions and resources posted by the facilitators, as well as opportunities for you to set the topic. Each week should take only about a half hour, so you have the opportunity to earn a half credit of CTLE per week. You can participate as much or as little as you would like, and credits will be granted based upon how much you choose to participate. Since capacity varies throughout the year, we understand and expect that not everyone will be able to join in every discussion. We hope this will be a place to share advice and resources, to ask questions, to validate your experiences, and to learn from each other.

The Zoom meetings will be posted separately. Disregard the date below as this will start January 16 and run until June 14.

Have you ever wished you had a safe, non-judgmental space to ask questions about LGBTQIA+ individuals and identity? Are you confused by the differences between sex, gender expression, gender identity and orientation? Have you ever wondered what the letters in the LGBTQIA+ initialism mean? Would you like strategies for creating more welcoming and affirming learning spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, colleagues, and families? This professional learning opportunity provides the tools you need! While progress is slowly being made to create more welcoming and affirming learning spaces there is still much to be done. For LGBTQIA+ students, colleagues, and families the school environment can pose numerous threats and obstacles. Below are some eye-opening statistics from GLSEN's (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) 2021 New York State School Climate Report: 90% of LGBTQIA+ students heard anti-LGBTQIA+ remarks/slurs; only 25% of LGBTQIA+ students were taught positive representations of LGBTQIA+ people, history or events; 53% of LGBTQIA+ students heard staff make homophobic remarks and 69% heard negative remarks about someone's gender expression from staff. Anti-LGBTQIA discrimination means that LGBTQIA+ students miss more school, have lower GPAs, and lower self-esteem. This dynamic, interactive professional learning session focuses on building your ally skills, developing welcoming and affirming learning spaces through the use of inclusive and respectful language, terminology, pronouns and discourse, assessing the physical environment for inclusivity, creating inclusive learning opportunities, and knowing where to go for resources and support. Attending this workshop is a proactive step towards creating welcoming and affirming learning spaces. Program participants will receive a Safe Zone sticker and course materials.
