Program: Office of School Improvement - CTLE Approved Sponsor

Audience: K-12 Educator & Curriculum Leader Teams

    Dates: 7/18/2023 to 7/19/2023

What do you value for your students? Schools articulate the answer to this question through their vision and mission statements. They strive to provide students with an education that fosters their intellectual and social and emotional well-being, honors who they are, and provides equitable learning experiences so all students achieve their goals. Yet, the curriculum, the tool teachers use to make decisions about classroom practice, is often limited to content knowledge. How can curriculum and instruction be designed to attend to valued outcomes for all students? How can it foster learning experiences in which students thrive and work towards fulfilling their potential? This program unpacks the Curriculum That Matters Framework, discussed in the text Making Curriculum Matter: How to Build SEL, Equity and Other Priorities into Daily Instruction. It identifies five elements: Practices, Deep Thinking, Social and Emotional Learning, Civic Participation and Discourse, and Equity, that can be used as lenses for examining the vision and mission of schools and aligning curriculum and instruction.

During the two summer days, participants will evaluate their curriculum and make revisions to a unit of study using the Curriculum That Matters Framework. Teams will be able to take this learned and applied process back to their districts for future work.

    Participants will
  • identify valued outcomes for student learning included in their school's vision and mission statements
  • evaluate their curriculum and instructional practices for evidence of each element
  • make revisions to a unit of study to address areas of need
  • create an action plan for next steps in developing a curriculum that embodies each element

Two half day sessions will be scheduled during the 2023-2024 school year for teams to revisit and continue working on their plans.

Have you ever wished you had a safe, non-judgmental space to ask questions about LGBTQ+ individuals and identity? Are you confused by the differences between gender, expression, identity and orientation? Have you ever wondered what the letters in the LGBTQ+ initialism mean? Would you like strategies for creating more welcoming and affirming learning spaces for LGBTQ+ students, colleagues, and families? This professional learning opportunity provides the tools you need! While progress is slowly being made to create more welcoming and affirming learning spaces there is still much to be done. For LGBTQ+ students, colleagues, and families the school environment can pose numerous threats and obstacles. Below are some eye-opening statistics from GLSEN's (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) 2021 New York State School Climate Report: 90% of LGBTQ+ students heard anti-LGBTQ+ remarks/slurs; only 25% of LGBTQ+ students were taught positive representations of LGBTQ+ people, history or events; 53% of LGBTQ+ students heard staff make homophobic remarks and 69% heard negative remarks about someone's gender expression from staff. Anti-LGBTQ discrimination means that LGBTQ+ students miss more school, have lower GPAs, and lower self-esteem. This dynamic, interactive professional learning session focuses on building your ally skills, developing welcoming and affirming learning spaces through the use of inclusive and respectful language, terminology, pronouns and discourse, assessing the physical environment for inclusivity, creating inclusive learning opportunities, and knowing where to go for resources and support. Attending this workshop is a proactive step towards creating welcoming and affirming learning spaces. Program participants will receive a Safe Zone sticker and course materials. Becoming a standards-based school or district is much more extensive than simply changing your report card. This 2-day institute will take participants on a deep-dive of what it truly means to create a standards-based instructional environment. The first day will focus on standards-based instruction and will highlight the importance of determining the cognitive complexity of standards, creating learning progressions, developing clear criteria and rubrics, and determining the most accurate assessment methods. In addition, day one will highlight the keys to effective feedback and why the separation of achievement from behavioral characteristics is so crucial to assessment accuracy. Day two will focus on developing a standards-based mindset to create a seamless relationship between the instructional and grading paradigms. Specifically, participants will come to know how the grading true north can serve as a metaphorical compass to guide all grading decisions and why traditional grading has run its course. As well, participants will come to know the theory and practices that allow schools and teachers to give students full credit for their learning, redefine student accountability, and repurpose homework.
