This is a QUICK book study! We will meet every morning for 1 week to cover 2 chapters each day. Where Building Thinking Classrooms provides the "why" for changes in the math classrooms, this book provides the "how" to make that transition successfully. It offers detailed instructions for planning your lessons to incorporate deeper understanding of the math through quality discourse and consolidation of student work. You will need to have your own copy of the book: 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions by Margaret Smith and Mary Kay Stein.

2. Navigating the Shifts in Math Education

This PD will be an informational session to equip administrators for supporting best practices in teaching math. In this session we will:
*Give an overview of Building Thinking Classrooms, along with info on our other PD offerings. *Discuss how the shifts in math education apply to classroom observations and NEE. *How to support these shifts and how they could be applied to other content areas.

Participants will each receive a copy of the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics.

Bring a notetaking medium of your choice and a device with internet capabilities. Registration and morning refreshments will begin at 8:00 am with the workshop starting at 8:30 am.

3. Putting the Practices into Action (with John SanGiovanni)

Program: RPDC - Northwest

Location: 5. St Joseph (St Joseph, MO)

Audience: K-12 Math Educators

Dates: 6/26/2024

Mathematically proficient students understand mathematics conceptually, use procedures with fluency, and apply what their skills to solve problems. They also call on processes and practices to thrive in college and career as well as their everyday lives. Teaching these practices can be hard. This workshop is a deep dive into these mathematical practices, helping teachers understand what they are and how to bring them to life in the mathematics classroom. The workshop unpacks what the practices look like and provides a wealth of instructional practices for infusing them. The workshop will also feature strategies for developing number sense and problem solving. Classroom-ready resources will be shared so that participants can help their students
*make sense of problems
*reason abstractly and quantitatively
*construct viable arguments
*model with mathematics
*use tools strategically
*attend to precision
*make use of structure
*express repeated reasoning

Lunch included

Optional 1 hour graduate credit available if you take an additional learning training and complete additional course work for both. For example, this can be paired with any of the Math Practice Trainings being offered on June 27, July 10, July 17, and July 24.

4. Building Thinking Classrooms

Program: RPDC - South Central

Location: 6 S&T Phelps Health Annex E101 Seminar Room (Rolla, MO) [map]

Audience: Teachers Who Teach Mathematics

Dates: 8/30/2024

New
This session is meant to introduce K-12 teachers who teach mathematics to the first toolkit of instructional strategies of Peter Liljedahl's research-based framework for creating classroom environments that move students from simply mimicking the teacher to authentic mathematical thinking. More thinking in math class means higher engagement, productive discussions, flexibility in reasoning, and greater number sense.

If you are attending a workshop for which you have not registered, a late fee will be applied.

Lunch will be provided. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions at least seven (7) days in advance.

5. SC RPDC ELA/Math Network (PM Session: Math)

11. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12)

Program: RPDC - Kansas City

Location: 3 KCRPDC-Union Station (Kansas City, MO) [map]

Audience: K-12 educators, instructional coaches and administrators

Dates: 3/7/2025

Teachers often struggle to engage students in good problem-solving tasks that require them to think, to get stuck, to engage in productive struggle, to try and fail, and to apply their knowledge in novel ways to solve a problem. In this session, Peter Lilijedahl, author of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning, will share some of the results of his research and the teaching practices he identified. These practices have the potential to transform classrooms into a space where deep mathematical learning occurs. This workshop is appropriate for K-12 teachers of mathematics and those that support them.

Deadline for registration is February 28th. 48 hour cancellation required for full refund.

Cost: $275 for KCRPDC Members and $330 for Non-Members
