1. LETRS Vol. 2: Language Comprehension Cohort 41

LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) units address each essential component of reading instruction and the foundational concepts that link each component. Skilled reading comprehension includes two domains, Word Recognition (Vol. 1 Units 1-4) and Language Comprehension (Vol.2 Units 5-8).

This Vol. 2 professional learning series focuses specifically on oral language and vocabulary, understanding reading comprehension, text-driven comprehension instruction, and the reading-writing connection.

Completion of LETRS Vol. 1 (Units 1-4) is a prerequisite to Vol. 2.

The 'blended learning' format of Vol. 2 series includes four face-to-face training dates and an online course license (through Lexia Learning) that includes tutorials/videos of effective classroom instruction.

Recipients of the MO Read-Lead-Exceed Initiative will receive their manuals from DESE. If you are not a MO RLE recipient, contact janaloge@missouristate.edu for ordering your manual. DO NOT purchase your own materials! Registration for four F2F dates includes parking and hot breakfast for $300 (This is waived for MO RLE recipients.). Lunch is on your own.

4. MLDS Year 1 - Northwest RPDC

Audience: Year 1 Building Leaders

Collaborative and practical learning experiences for principals during their first stages of their career are guided by the content of the MLDS and include administrative mentoring that is responsive to your needs as a practicing building leader. The MLDS is intensive, relevant, practical, and growth-evoking professional learning.

This program is developed in collaboration with, and supported by, MAESP, MOASSP, and MASA. The Learning is aligned to the MLDS Competencies and National Professional Standards for Educational Leaders.

This is the first year mentoring program for new administrators.

5. Special Education Director's Planning and Networking Series

Program: RPDC - Kansas City

Location: Lee's Summit R-VII - Stansberry Leadership Center (Lee's Summit, MO)

Audience: Special Education Administrators/Leaders

Dates: 6/20/2023 to 4/8/2024

This planning and networking series is intended for special education directors who are beyond the first couple of years in the position (although, anyone is welcome). The initial focus will be to plan out the fiscal calendar for the year, along with other DESE reporting timelines. The purpose is to allow the participants an opportunity to network together on practices, procedures, etc. related to special education programming.

The first scheduled meeting will be the planning meeting for the year. Three to four additional meetings will be set at this time. The location will remain in Lee's Summit for each of the meetings during the 23-24 year.

The first session is on June 20, 2023 (There will be a total of 4 sessions throughout the year with dates determined during this first planning session).

Cost: FREE.

11. LETRS Volume 1: Cohort 25

Program: RPDC - Heart of MO - Regional Professional Development Center

Location: B105 Assessment Resource Center, 2800 Maguire Blvd, University of MO (Columbia, MO)

Dates: 7/17/2023 to 4/5/2024

Volume I includes 4 on-line units of study, complemented with a textbook manual for study. The online platform makes up the biggest portion of the work for course completion. Participants must complete a six-hour face-to-face training for each unit. All-day, in-person attendance is required, and missed sessions must be made up. Units include: The Challenge of Learning to Read; The Speech Sounds of English; Teaching Beginning Phonics, Word Recognition, and Spelling; and Advanced Decoding, Spelling and Word Recognition. LETRS gives teachers the skills they need to master how to teach the five essential components of literacy, plus writing, spelling, and oral language. Teachers also learn: How to implement instructional routines and activities, Approaches to differentiate instruction to meet the literacy needs of all students. Participants will complete a portfolio of Bridge to Practice activities that ensure they can transfer what they learn in LETRS to the classroom. .

NOTE: Materials are provided to participants by the MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education only if they have applied to MO Read, Lead, Exceed. Participants should also note that registration using the Frontline system only schedules the required face-to-face training sessions - it does NOT initiate a materials order by the Heart of MO-RPDC.

If participant is not part of the MO Read, Lead, Exceed program, there will be charge of $1040.00 per participant. Contact instructor listed below for possible funding solutions.

This in-depth training looks into the science of reading research for teaching vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. Participants will link oral language to vocabulary, writing phases of development and spelling. Instructional practices will be reviewed for understanding writing phases across genre, and how explicit lesson planning can change comprehension, vocabulary retention and spelling. Participants will also walk away with the ability to distinguish between comprehension products and processes while using and viewing multiple lessons/resources for deepening the foundations of reading. Teachers will be asked to apply the information on chosen students

All training facilitated by a LETRS certified trainer. Training includes 5 sessions and 4 on-line modules/videos of effective instruction, with classroom observations.

Teachers learn the "science of reading" so they are able to extend research into classroom application no matter the curriculum or program used. Instruction is a mixture of face-to-face learning through structured modules and online videos of effective classroom instruction.     Volume I includes 4 on-line units of study, complemented with a textbook manual for study. The online platform makes up the biggest portion of the work for course completion. Participants must complete a six-hour face-to-face training for each unit. All-day, in-person attendance is required, and missed sessions must be made up. Units include: The Challenge of Learning to Read; The Speech Sounds of English; Teaching Beginning Phonics, Word Recognition, and Spelling; and Advanced Decoding, Spelling and Word Recognition. LETRS gives teachers the skills they need to master how to teach the five essential components of literacy, plus writing, spelling, and oral language. Teachers also learn: How to implement instructional routines and activities, Approaches to differentiate instruction to meet the literacy needs of all students. Participants will complete a portfolio of Bridge to Practice activities that ensure they can transfer what they learn in LETRS to the classroom.

    NOTE: Materials are provided to participants by the MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education only if they have applied to MO Read, Lead, Exceed. Participants should also note that registration using the Frontline system only schedules the required face-to-face training sessions - it does NOT initiate a materials order by the Heart of MO-RPDC.

    35. Trauma Responsive: Building Student Support Team Capacity

    As an educator, you face the impact of trauma in your school every day. Whether it is acute or complex trauma, those experiences disrupt brain activity and can lead students to exhibit disruptive and/or disengaged behaviors. This year-long cohort (6 sessions) requires a team of five* building representatives which could include, but are not limited to: building leader, classroom teacher, counselor, special education teacher, school nurse, school resource officer, etc. School representatives must attend all six sessions.

    We will use the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools to address the underlying causes of trauma, identify student responses and implement highly effective school-wide systems of support.
    *School wide teams will be based on the student population.

MLDS New Leaders Year 2 includes two regional meetings which provide practical, relevant learning as well as two coaching labs providing hands on experiences to improve skills in assessing school culture. In addition, a minimum of 20 hours of mentor support are included. Participation in New Leaders Year 1 is a pre-requisite for this cohort.     This training is only for teachers who have successfully completed LETRS Volume 1, Units 1-4.

    If you are a recipient of the MO Read, Lead, Exceed Scholarship, your materials and training will be provided for free.


    This in-depth training looks into the science of reading research for teaching vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. Participants will link oral language to vocabulary, writing phases of development and spelling. Instructional practices will be reviewed for understanding writing phases across genre, and how explicit lesson planning can change comprehension, vocabulary retention and spelling. Participants will also walk away with the ability to distinguish between comprehension products and processes while using and viewing multiple lessons/resources for deepening the foundations of reading. Teachers will be asked to apply the information on chosen students

    All training facilitated by a LETRS certified trainer. Training includes 5 sessions and 4 on-line modules/videos of effective instruction, with classroom observations.

    This basic training is developed with first year special education professionals in mind and focuses on the areas of most common noncompliance including, but not limited to, IEP development, evaluations/reevaluations, and special education transfer procedures. The two days will provide hands-on training using the model forms, the Standards and Indicators Manual, and the State Plan for Special Education. (This does not meet the credentialing requirements for Beginning Teacher Assistance Program.) This is a two day training and participants must be present for both days. Day one will be held on August 14th and day two will be held on September 18th. Please make sure you have permission from your district to attend both 8/14 and 9/18. We will meet in the Meyer Alumni Center located at 300 South Jefferson Street. Training will begin promptly at 8:30. We will have a working lunch and each day will conclude by 3:00. The units include: The Mighty Word: Oral Language and Vocabulary; Digging for Meaning: Understanding Reading Comprehension; Text-Driven Comprehension Instruction; and The Reading-Writing Connection. LETRS gives teachers the skills they need to master how to teach the five essential components of literacy, plus writing, spelling, and oral language.     Audience: School administrator, participant with behavioral expertise, and participant with academic expertise. This will form your Tier 3 Core Team

    Must have completed MO SW-PBS Tier 2 training

    This training will consist of 4 days throughout the school year and is designed for SW-PBS school teams that have demonstrated readiness to develop a Tier 3 system of individualized support. School teams will build on the established school-wide system to develop an efficient process to serve high-risk students by learning how to conduct a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) & use the results to develop a basic Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

    Sessions include instruction for collecting relevant student data using a variety of techniques, interpreting data to determine a competing pathway, identification of function-based intervention strategies, writing behavioral goals, options for monitoring implementation & student progress. Teams will engage in a guided practice opportunity for conducting a functional assessment & developing an appropriate intervention plan using data from a student in their own setting. Participants will use an evaluation rubric to assess features of their practice FBA-BIP.

    Session 1) Tier 3 Teaming and establishing data decision rules for student identification
    Session 2) Completing the FBA (Adapted FACTS)
    Session 3) Designing a Behavior Intervention Plan (Success Plan)
    Session 4) Review of ETLP's and impact on student behavior pathway

    Fee is $250 per team of 4 ($1,000 for all 4 sessions). Lunch included.

    Audience: Early childhood teachers, administrators, coaches, process coordinators.

    Dates: 9/21/2023 to 4/11/2024

    Early childhood educators will join together quarterly. Topics may include, but not be limited to English Learners, social emotional, ELA, math, ECSE, First Steps, and DESE updates. Time will be scheduled at each meeting for networking with one another.

    $80 (Member) or $100 (Non-Members) Fee includes parking and registration for all four of the networking sessions.

    101. MLDS: Sustaining Leadership IV Cohort

    Audience: School Leaders in who have four plus years of school leadership experience.

    The Missouri Leadership Development System (MLDS) is a continuum of learning and supports provided to school leaders from aspiring to retiring. In addition to content available for aspiring school leaders, five levels of support comprise MLDS: New Leaders Year I, New Leaders Year II, Sustaining Leadership Year III, Sustaining Leadership IV and Transformational Leadership V & VI.

    Sustaining Leadership IV Cohort:
    The Missouri Leadership Development System (MLDS) is a continuum of learning and supports provided to school leaders from aspiring to retiring. In addition to content available for aspiring school leaders, five levels of support comprise MLDS: New Leaders Year I, New Leaders Year II, Sustaining Leadership Year III, Sustaining Leadership IV and Transformational Leadership V. School leaders will want to invest in their own professional development by attending each level of training. The Missouri Leadership Development System (MLDS) Sustaining Leadership IV Cohort provides principals training and support through research-based learning experiences, opportunities to develop formal and informal professional networks. MLDS Sustaining Leadership IV includes four regional meetings which provide practical, relevant learning as well as one coaching lab providing hands on experiences to improve skills in assessing school culture. Participation in Sustaining Leadership III is a recommended pre-requisite for this course.
