Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) provides educators with the tools and understanding to teach the essential skills needed for literacy. Teachers learn the "science of reading" so they are able to apply research into classroom application no matter the curriculum or program used. The 'blended learning' format of this series includes face-to-face learning through structured models and online tutorials/videos of effective classroom instruction.

SPECIAL NOTES: Participants must attend a 90-minute virtual launch in August (dates/times will be sent via email).

(1) There are four 'face to face' dates for this workshop series. We will focus on each of the four LETRS units respectively:
  • Day 1 and Unit 1, The Challenge of Learning to Read;
  • Day 2/Unit 2: The Speech Sounds of English;
  • Day 3/Unit 3: Teaching Beginning Phonics, Word Recognition, and Spelling
  • Day 4/Unit 4: Advanced Decoding, Spelling, and Word Recognition.

    Registration fee for all four 'face to face' dates is $300, including parking and breakfast. This is waived for MO RLE recipients.

    (2) Those who aren't MO RLE recipients will need contact janaloge@missouristate for purchase of their manual. The district will be invoiced for $399.

    (3) Recipients of the MO Read-Lead-Exceed Initiative will receive their materials from DESE. DO NOT purchase your own materials!

    3. LETRS Vol. 2: Language Comprehension Cohort 52 (Hurley Onsite)

    LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) units address each essential component of reading instruction and the foundational concepts that link each component. Skilled reading comprehension includes two domains, Word Recognition (Units 1-4) and Language Comprehension (Units 5-8). This professional learning series focuses specifically on oral language and vocabulary, understanding reading comprehension, text-driven comprehension instruction, and the reading-writing connection. Completion of LETRS Vol. 1 (Units 1-4) is a prerequisite to Vol. 2. The 'blended learning' format of Vol. 2 series include four face-to-face training dates and an online course license (through Lexia Learning) that includes tutorials/videos of effective classroom instruction. Registration for four F2F dates includes parking and a hot breakfast for $300. Lunch on your own. LETRS Vol. 2 manual and online course license will be ordered by ATLL and the district will be invoiced for these materials ($369 per person) and the four f2f trainings at cost recovery ($75 per session).     5. Improving Comprehension with Questioning the Author Virtual Book study

McKeown share their new findings on Questioning the Author, the approach that galvanized the research field to look at comprehension instruction in a new way. The book includes how-to's on planning and orchestrating the Questioning the Author approach as well as a practical troubleshooting guide based on classroom transcripts of 25 common challenges to discussion.

    6. Shifting the Balance Gr. 3-5 Virtual Book study

    This basic training is developed with new special education professionals in mind and focuses on the areas of most common noncompliance including, but not limited to, discipline, IEP development and evaluations/reevaluations. (This does not meet the credentialing requirements for Beginning Teacher Assistance Program) Day 1 will include an overview of the special education processes and timelines, where to find vital information/resources on the DESE website to assist you, Quality IEP training including SMART goals and Standards Based goals, Specially Designed Instruction, and some High Leverage Practices. These two days will just give you some background knowledge to hopefully help you understand what your director and/or process coordinator are talking about when you are working with them. This is a TWO day training and you MUST attend BOTH days! We will meet in the Meyer Alumni Center on August 2nd and Park Central Office Building in Room #235 on August 7th.     100. Special Education Compliance Monitoring Self-Assessment Training

    This training is designed for districts who will going through self-assessment during 2024-2025 (Cohort 2). This will be a full day training designed to assist public agencies in preparation for their Special Education Tiered Monitoring review process. The training will describe the self-assessment process and the use of the IMACS 2.0 system. During the morning session, we will go over the indicators that will be part of the self-assessment and discuss ways to ensure compliance with those indicators. After lunch, a DESE Compliance Supervisor will join us and we will go over the technical aspects of self-assessment and how to use IMACS 2.0 properly to complete the required activities. We will begin at 9:00 AM and the day will end by 3:00 at the latest. Cost is $30 per person and includes lunch and parking.     101. Experience an Educational Benefit Review (EBR) with Your Team

    Have you heard about EBR but want to know more before you decide to have an EBR in your district? This day is designed with you in mind! Bring a team of 4-6 individuals and participate in the EBR process as Amy and Melynda guide you through the steps using a file you bring with you from your district. If you are curious about an EBR, take advantage of this opportunity! The training will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude at 3:00 PM. The cost will be $30 and includes lunch. Important Note: You will make sure each member of your team registers in Frontline due to space. You will be expected to bring a student file with you - making sure there is a complete copy for each of your team members. The file must be a student who has three IEPs with an evaluation report (so it will be a student who is due for a reeval soon). You will make sure your team members each have a copy of the evaluation report, each of the three consecutive IEPs, and the reporting progress page sent to parents for each IEP.
