2. HOPE HUB: Formative Checks That Make Thinking Visible

High-quality formative data can do more than tell us who "got it" and who didn't! In this asynchronous session, educators will learn practical approaches to collecting and analyzing evidence of student reasoning to inform responsive instruction. Participants will explore approaches to classifying and grading student responses, practice interpreting misconceptions and partial understandings; and design quick but powerful checks that illuminate thinking, not just recall. By the end of the 6-week course window, participants will demonstrate their learning by submitting a short mini-project that they can put into practice immediately. Participants will receive access to materials on February 23 and submit their mini-projects on or before April 6.

This is the third session for the book study on Teach Like A Champion's Guide to the Science of Reading. Anyone can attend any session! Attendees who register and attend at least three sessions will receive a copy of the book. In this meeting, we address how students access academic language. We dive into Vocabulary Reconsidered, examining why vocabulary is the most important form of knowledge for comprehension and how to explicitly teach not just definitions, but complex syntax. We will also explore the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing, showing how intentional writing tasks function as an accelerator for deeper reading comprehension.

We will also cover how to embed this instruction into your daily routines, without overloading your day. Ideal for educators supporting students with emotional or behavioral challenges who want long-term change, not just short-term compliance.

This is the fourth and final session for the book study on Teach Like A Champion's Guide to the Science of Reading. Anyone can attend any session! Attendees who register and attend at least two sessions will receive a copy of the book. In this concluding meeting, we synthesize our learning by focusing on the purpose of literacy instruction. We will explore The Power of the Book, discussing why sustained engagement with whole texts is the optimal format for building understanding and comprehension. We will then tackle Close Reading, reframing it as the intentional, final act of intellectual rigor. We will share concrete strategies for improving students' ability to access and analyze complex texts, equipping them with the skills necessary for long-term academic and professional success.

It will take place as an in-person session at Buckeye Hope, with each participant presenting a short activity about a chapter in the book. We will begin assigning the chapters at our January meeting of the cohort, but welcome everyone to join us even if you aren't available for the January 28 session.
