NOTE: This Targeted Skills Group is open to Auburn, Mexico, Onondaga, Solvay, Cato Meridian and LaFayette Districts only.
As part of this Targeted Skills Group districts will understand:
-what SPP 8 is and what their responsibilities are during their reporting cycle
-what the Parental Involvement Survey is and best practice for distribution and methods to improve response rates
-how the data is reported and how they may use the data to improve their practice 
-how family engagement policies, procedures and practices can improve outcomes for students with disabilities

2. Parent and Family Engagement within the FBA and BIP Process - VIRTUAL

Families, caregivers, and guardians will understand the definition of a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)/Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP), when it is needed, and how it is conducted/developed and the role they play as part of the Committee for Preschool Special Education (CPSE) /Committee for Special Education (CSE) teams.

The purpose of this training is to educate families of students with the most severe disabilities on the essential information of New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA). Families and those that support them will:
- Review the state assessment options
- Identify the purpose and structure of NYSAA and what it entails
- Become familiar with the process for determining whether a student is eligible for NYSAA
- Explore student exit options and how a NYSAA designation impacts student postsecondary planning

4. Working with Families to Improve Student Outcomes - VIRTUAL

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 3/18/2026

Participants will receive a foundational overview of Family Engagement, its importance, and the Six Essential Features of Family-School Collaboration. Additionally, it integrates many activities that Educational Organizations (EO) can use to assess and further develop their current Family Engagement systems and practices.

This session will cover Module 2: High Quality Supportive Environments of The Pyramid Model Framework. The framework was developed to describe and address the social-emotional needs of young children. Within the context of creating high quality supportive environments in which children can be successful, this module will focus on promoting preschool students' social-emotional skill development and addressing challenging behavior through both prevention and intervention. Target audience for this module includes teaching assistants and one to one aides for preschool settings.

This training examines the different diploma and credential options that are available to all students. Participants will understand the
- credit requirements for graduation in NYS
- Multiple pathways to graduation, 4 + 1 option requirements
- appeal eligibility criteria
- safety net options for students with disabilities
- exiting credentials available in NYS and the requirements for each
This training is ideal for school counselors, administrators, school psychologists, special education and general education teachers, other related service providers, families, and students.

Student participation in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) planning process improves both in-school and post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. When parents, school staff, and those participating in the IEP planning process prepare student's effectively to participate in their Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings the students learn self-advocacy skills and take an active role in their own IEP development. During this training parents will engage in strength based activities as well gain strategies to involve their child in the IEP Process.

Specially designed instruction (SDI) is the teaching strategies and methods used by teachers to instruct students who receive special education services.
In this training participants will: ● understand the concepts of specially designed instruction. ● understand that there is both federal and state regulation around SDI. ● be able to examine what SDI might look like in the classroom and in the home. ● understand their value as engaged meaningful partners in the special education process and education of their child.

9. CPSE to CSE for Professionals - VIRTUAL

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 3/26/2026

This workshop will help professionals to understand the transition process and their roles as a member of the transition team. They will also learn how to help parents to understand the difference between services in CPSE and CSE and to understand the purpose of an IEP. This session is ideal for CPSE/CSE chairpersons, preschool providers, school administrators and community agencies who support preschool families.

10. CPSE to CSE for Parents- VIRTUAL

The transition from preschool to kindergarten can be a time of excitement but it can also be a source of anxiety.  Transitions are made easier when families and providers understand the process.  This workshop will help participants to understand the transition process, to be an active member of the transition team, to understand the difference between services in CPSE and CSE, and to understand the purpose of an IEP.  Parents will come away from this workshop with a better understanding of what to expect as their children move on to kindergarten.

11. Preschool Special Education Process @ OCM BOCES

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 4/21/2026

The Preschool Special Education Process training is designed to gain a foundational understanding of the CPSE Process. Participants will:
- Understand the role of the Chairperson, the Preschool Provider, the Evaluator, the County and the parents as members of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)
- Learn about early childhood transitions, continuum of services and the requirements of the committee
- Develop practices which encourage parental involvement and cultivate home-school partnerships
This training is ideal to engage preschool partners in dialogue and partnership for the educational benefit of preschool students with disabilities, including: special education administrators, CPSE Chairpersons, preschool special education evaluators, special education and general education teachers, early childhood professionals, paraprofessionals, related services professionals, municipality representatives, agency/community service providers or case managers.

In this training we will walk through the Family Guide to Transition Planning-Preparing Students with Disabilities for Life After High School to assist families in understanding the transition planning process specifically from high school to life after high school. When families are knowledgeable about and invited to participate in the transition planning process, students with disabilities experience improved post-school outcomes in the areas of employment, postsecondary education, and independent living.

13. Positive Solutions for Families: The Pyramid Model Parent Training Modules - VIRTUAL

Program: Mid-State FACE Center

Dates: 5/19/2026 to 5/26/2026

This training package is designed to provide families and caregivers of young children with evidence-based practices, materials and resources to:
- Promote children's social emotional skills
- Understand challenging behavior
- Use positive approaches to prevent and respond to challenging behavior
-Teach children the skills they need to learn more appropriate behaviors
These practices can be used for all young children. Participants will receive a multitude of downloadable/printable materials and handouts to be able to engage with the practices, including: feelings faces cards, scripted stories, visuals, problem solving kit, household rules template, ""how to"" guides, a family workbook and a family routine guide with suggestions for how to prevent and respond to challenging behaviors in your daily home routine and what skills to teach to improve the behavior. This training is ideal for parents and caregivers of young children as well as any early childhood service provider or teacher who is looking for information to support families of young children.

This training provides an overview of the key elements of self-determination and how to apply them working with students.
Participants will
- identify the 8 components of self-determination
- review materials and resources to promote self-determination
- develop skills to design self-determination plans for students.
This training is ideal for special and general education teachers, administrators, related service personnel, agency representatives, families and students.

The purpose of Introducing Elementary Students to the World of Work is to understand the importance of beginning career development at the elementary age for students with disabilities, explore and expand elementary career development activities that support self and career awareness, identity and career exploration, enhance understanding of collaboration among schools, families, and community connections in elementary career development, and review resources and strategies to ensure elementary experiences are impactful and encouraged for elementary-aged students with disabilities and throughout elementary school.
