1. LETRS Units 1-4 Cohort #2 (NOTE: some dates are in-person, some are virtual)

LETRS provides teachers with the knowledge needed to master the fundamentals of literacy instruction. Educators will acquire fundamental skills in the areas of phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and language. The expertise you will acquire by taking this course will be appreciated by your current and future students and colleagues. Take aways from this training are understanding the why and how of providing literacy instruction. The course facilitator will focus strongly on a theory to practice framework. Volume 1 will be divided into two semesters. During the Fall of 2023 sessions, we will learn about the Challenges of Learning to Read and The Speech Sounds in English. During our Fall 2023 sessions we will learn about Teaching Beginning Phonics and Advanced Decoding. NOTE: This course will follow a hybrid model. Participants will have the flexibility to complete the course material on their own schedule with a suggested sequence and biweekly zoom meetings to meet and discuss with other participants and the facilitator. Participants will attend a face-to-face session at the end of each unit to participate in hands-on activities and thought partner discussions. 2. LETRS Volume 2: Units 5-8

Program: ESC of Central Ohio Achievement & Leadership Services

Dates: 2/5/2024 to 5/24/2024

LETRS Units 5-8 provides teachers with the knowledge needed to master the fundamentals of literacy instruction. Educators will acquire knowledge in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, writing and language. Participants will have the flexibility to complete the course material on their own schedule with a suggested sequence and biweekly zoom meetings to meet and discuss with other participants and the facilitator. 4. LETRS for Administrators

LETRS® for Administrators is a professional learning opportunity designed specifically for school leadership, coaches, principals, and district administrators. The course defines the systems and infrastructures required to successfully implement a literacy initiative aligned to scientifically based research. Built from the research in implementation science and sustainability, school improvement, and shared leadership, the course provides numerous tools - including an analysis of the current systems required for improved literacy outcomes - for guiding an implementation through various stages. The course is designed to support leaders in creating a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) and structures to improve overall literacy instruction. Participants will receive a manual and have access to a learning platform, where they can engage in five units of study. Unit 1: Using Systems and Implementation Science to Improve Literacy Outcomes Unit 2: Universal Instruction at the Word-Recognition Level Unit 3: Universal Instruction at the Language Comprehension Level Unit 4: Leadership, Assessment, Data-Based Decision-Making, and Literacy and Intervention Block Design Unit 5: Professional Development, Community and Family Involvement, Problem-Solving, and Sustainability Planning.

5. SIOP for Educators

SIOP is a research-based and validated model of sheltered instruction that has been widely and successfully used across the U.S. for over 15 years. 6. Positioning Multilingual Learners and Their Families for Success in K-8 Mathematics

Teachers and leaders have the pivotal responsibility to establish and maintain conditions that facilitate the success and inclusion of children learning mathematics in languages that differ from their first languages-multilingual learners. The positioning of multilingual learners affects their identities, participation, agency, and abilities to develop communicative, social, and academic competencies. Kathryn Chval will share how exceptional teachers establish conditions for student success in elementary school mathematics classrooms. She will discuss specific strategies and images of practice that facilitate access, engagement, and inclusion of multilingual learners and their families. Kathryn Chval is the Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Dean Chval is a respected educator, scholar, and leader. She is the lead author of Teaching Math to Multilingual Students: Positioning English Learners for Success and multiple books published by NCTM. Her collection of work and research in schools, communities, and universities is focused on designing mathematical experiences that draw on student and family resources and interests, empathy, research, and practice.

**THE TRAINING IS FOR MEMBER DISTRICTS ONLY** The Orton-Gillingham approach is a structured, systematic, multisensory, and diagnostic-prescriptive approach for teaching language skills (including reading, spelling, and handwriting) to students with dyslexia. This 10-day course will prepare educators to implement high-quality reading instruction that aligns with reading science successfully. Course topics will include the characteristics and needs of students with dyslexia, the critical structures of English that must be addressed by instruction, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective individual lesson plans. This 60-hour introductory course will introduce participants to the basics of the Orton-Gillingham approach. Completing this course and a supervised practicum (to be contracted individually with instructors, cost not included) prepares participants for the associate level of the Orton-Gillingham Academy application process for certification.
ASHLAND CREDIT (Optional): 4-semester hours of Ashland Credit is available to purchase. (2 semester hours each week at $498 each week).

10. EL Summer Institute

Program: ESC of Central Ohio Achievement & Leadership Services

Emily Francis is a nationally recognized English as a Second Language teacher at Concord High School in Concord, North Carolina. She serves students at various English proficiency levels. Emily is originally from Guatemala and her experience as an English Language Learner inspired her to become an EL teacher. This affords her a deep understanding of the challenges her students must overcome to succeed. Emily earned a BA in Spanish and a MAT in TESOL from UNC-Charlotte. She serves as a professional development facilitator, motivational and keynote speaker. Emily is part of UNC-Charlotte College of Education's Advisory Board. Emily served as a teacher liaison to the Cabarrus County Board of Education as a district Teacher of the Year in 2016. Emily is the author of If You Only Knew: Letters from an Immigrant Teacher.

15. Introduction to Restorative Practices

The Restorative Practices session will provide the participants with practical approaches designed to increase adult/student relationships, connection, safety, and opportunities for success and learning. Welcome to Level 1 and 2 of the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines or C-STAG training. This workshop will prepare you to use the CSTAG model with your school threat assessment team. CSTAG was developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell. The first part of the training, Level 1, covers the foundations of threat assessment and the basics of the CSTAG model. We begin with defining threat assessment and how it should be adapted for use in schools. In the second part of training, Level 2, you will work with your teams to practice using the CSTAG model on a series of case exercises.

18. Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Beyond Facts and Algorithms

Program: ESC of Central Ohio Achievement & Leadership Services

Fluency is more than basic facts and algorithms. It is complex and teaching it well is challenging. To find success, we must know what it is so that we can teach it well. This session unpacks the big ideas of fluency arming participants with practical know-how for advancing their students' fluency. Participants will take a deep dive into teaching, practicing, and assessing the strategies of fluent students. Learning will be complemented with ready-to-use classroom resources.

Participants will articulate the big ideas about what fluency is and how it is realized for our students through instruction, practice, and assessment, identify the significant strategies for adding, subtracting multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, determine essential foundational skills for computational strategies and how to both reteach and reinforce them through instruction and intervention, and acquire a collection of ready-to-use classroom resources.

John SanGiovanni is a best-selling author and nationally recognized leader in mathematics education. He works as a mathematics coordinator in Howard County, Maryland leading curriculum development, professional learning, assessment, and intervention. John is passionate about developing mathematics specialists and teacher leaders in his district and at McDaniel College. He also works as an international consultant providing professional learning for mathematics content, pedagogy, and curriculum design.

19. Project Innovation: Cardboard, Circuits, and Code

In this two-day course, participants will work through the design process to create physical products from cardboard. Ozobots, Makey Makey, and the Hummingbird kits will then be used to incorporate codable functionality into these cardboard creations.
