Workshop Description:

Self-Determination is a research-based predictor of post-school success in the areas of education, employment, and independent living. The purpose of this interactive workshop is to foster and support the development of self-determination skills for students of all ages and ability levels utilizing a collaborative school and family approach. It provides participants with foundational concepts, resources, and strategies to implement and incorporate practices that promote the development of self-determination throughout a student's day, across all settings and at all ages. This workshop will provide an overview of what self-determination is and why it is important; the concept of Self-Determination across the lifespan; and student involvement in the Individual Education Program (IEP) Process. *This workshop is required in order to enroll in the workshop, How to Foster Self-Determination for All Students: Resources & Implementation.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is intended to develop participants' basic understanding of SDI. SDI means adapting what is taught and/or the manner in which instruction is provided to meet the student's unique needs. SDI provides students with different avenues to acquire content knowledge; process information, construct meaning, and/or make sense of ideas. Through SDI, teaching and materials are adapted so that each student can learn effectively, regardless of differences in ability. Join us to learn more!!

Workshop Description:

Positive Solutions for Families is an evidence-based, parent training series for families of early childhood age children and professionals working with those families. Each session will provide information on how to promote children's social and emotional skills, understand their challenging behaviors, and use positive approaches to help children learn appropriate behavior at home, school or in community settings. Parents and professionals will gain general information on key strategies that may be used with all children at the early childhood stage of development including:
● The importance of building positive relationships with children
● The importance of play on building those positive relationships
● Understanding how to make expectations clear for children
● Learning how to teach problem-solving skills

Workshop Description:

This interactive workshop offers an overview of challenging behaviors, the behavior pathway, and how to apply the function-based thinking process to challenging behavior. Function-based thinking is a Tier 1 support that can be used for all students, that requires teachers to informally gather data on student behavior, analyze the behavioral data, use the behavior pathway to determine the function or "why” of the behavior, and match interventions to the function of the student's behavior. Professionals will leave with an understanding of how to observe, analyze, and intervene on challenging behaviors.

Workshop Description:

Understanding Intervention: Overview of Tiered Intervention in Schools is signed to support schools in (a) identifying how academic interventions are used in schools, (b) understanding the elements of high-quality intervention, and (c) matching interventions to student need. After ensuring a school's tier 1 environment is sound, as this is where most students with disabilities receive their education, staff and teachers should be taught the "ingredients” of high-quality intervention and practice matching intervention to demonstrated student need. This is the first of two modules for this topic.

Workshop Description:

This interactive workshop focuses on one of the key instructional areas of reading: fluency. Participants will learn what reading fluency is, what the Science of Reading teaches us about the critical elements of reading fluency, how fluency develops over time, and how best to teach this skill to support overall reading development. Additionally, information about how to use assessment to optimize student instruction in fluency will be provided. This workshop emphasizes the importance of high-quality fluency instruction while addressing the issues of equity, legal responsibilities regarding providing instruction aligned with the Science of Reading, and how to support students with diverse learning needs.

Participants will be able to:
- Describe the legal and ethical importance of providing scientific research-based instruction in reading fluency.
- Define reading fluency and describe why it is important to overall reading development.
- Explain when and how to teach reading fluency according to our current knowledge of the Science of Reading.
- Identify ways in which classroom assessments can be used to improve fluency instruction and student outcomes.
- Describe ways in which students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs can be provided with individualized fluency support.

The purpose of this workshop is to help participants gain a greater understanding of the Science of Reading; specifically, what phonological awareness is and how crucial this skillset is to the foundation of reading success. Participants will explore which skills to teach when, and how to teach these skills for students to master phonological awareness. The workshop will also provide context for the importance of using assessments to improve the effectiveness of phonological instruction for students. To overcome equity barriers, educators need to focus on systemic, explicit instruction to teach the skills supported by the science of reading.

Workshop Description:
This interactive workshop provides information on the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) regarding Special Education Mediation to encourage the use of this voluntary process statewide. This training will include the following topics: Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): The Basics, Resolving Disputes Under IDEA and IDEA Special Education Basic Mediation Procedures.

Mediation is a highly effective process to resolve issues relating to special education. In 2014- 2015, of those cases that proceeded to a mediation session in New York State, 88% resulted in agreement between parents and school districts. In mediation, the focus is on establishing collaboration and communication between the parties. In addition, mediation is provided at no cost to the parents and school district and is a less adversarial and time consuming way of resolving disputes.

Workshop Description:

The issue of in and out-of-school suspensions of all students, including students with disabilities, who demonstrate escalated classroom behavior, has become controversial and divisive leaving many staff members at odds. This training package, designed for building level administrators and teachers, is intended to help participants understand that exclusionary practices have significant short and long-term negative effects on academic, social-emotional, health and wellness, and family outcomes of students, and there are alternative approaches to discipline that lead to improved student outcomes. Participants will ground themselves in a common understanding of suspension, removal, and discipline, as well as influences, impacts, policies, and procedures that contribute to the on-going suspension crisis in schools today. Participants will learn and explore effective research-based strategies for responding to student behavior and appropriate alternatives to suspension, which have significantly fewer negative impacts on student or family outcomes.

This interactive workshop focuses on one of the key instructional areas of reading: fluency. Participants will learn what reading fluency is, what the Science of Reading teaches us about the critical elements of reading fluency, how fluency develops over time, and how best to teach this skill to support overall reading development. Additionally, information about how to use assessment to optimize student instruction in fluency will be provided. This workshop emphasizes the importance of high-quality fluency instruction while addressing the issues of equity, legal responsibilities regarding providing instruction aligned with the Science of Reading, and how to support students with diverse learning needs.

Participants will be able to:
- Describe the legal and ethical importance of providing scientific research-based instruction in reading fluency.
