Course 1 is also part of the Principal Induction Program which is for principals and assistant principals who have five years or less of school administrator experience. This program is required for principals and assistant principals hired since January 1, 2008 and includes completing NISL Courses 1 and 2. NISL Course 1 must be completed before any of the other NISL courses (2 and 3) are taken.

8. Tools & Techniques for Beginning Teachers - "Teacher Effectiveness to Improve Student Learning" (Blended)

Program: Professional Development

Audience: First, second, and third year teachers

Dates: 12/13/2020 to 1/13/2021

Participants must complete the asynchronous online portion on Canvas PRIOR to attending the synchronous Zoom session on January 13, 4:00-5:30 pm. Registered participants will receive an email invitation to the Canvas course approximately one month prior to the face-to-face session.

Being observed doesn't need to be a nerve-racking experience. This workshop will help teachers recognize effective teaching by analyzing the Danielson Framework for Teaching and actual lessons. Teachers will examine a lesson and engage in a pre-observation and post-observation dialogue with their colleagues to gain a better understanding of the difference between proficient and distinguished in select domains.

Professional development sessions are offered for Berks County Intermediate Unit member district staff and staff from organizations supporting students from Berks County member districts. Additionally, sessions are offered for Pennsylvania districts per contracted work that falls under the PA Department of Education (PDE) Statewide System of Support services. 12. Be Trauma-Informed: When Behavior Plans Don't Work (CPE Course)

The goal of this online course is to impact student learning by expanding their knowledge about and perspectives on children who are impacted by developmental trauma, such as neglect; divorce; physical, emotional and sexual abuse; significant familial mental health and substance abuse; witnessing domestic violence; displacement and homelessness.

Further, participants who take this course should be expected to see changes in student learning by being able to identify what the behaviors of a child who has experienced developmental trauma look like in the classroom setting, and being able to respond to those students' unique needs by having learned strategies to utilize within the classroom setting in order to mitigate significant behavioral and emotional manifestations that negatively impact educational performance and progress.

13. Best Practices in Helping Adolescents Succeed (CPE Course)

Audience: K-12 educators

This online course is designed to examine adolescent development, from both the theoretical and practical perspectives. Various theories of learning and human development will be explored, in relation to adolescents (i.e. youth aged twelve and older). The cognitive, social, emotional, physical, moral, and motivational domains will be examined in order to provide a comprehensive, integrative approach to working with adolescents in secondary schools. Course participants will also examine various models for secondary education that are consistent with 21st century teaching and learning. Through research-based readings, case studies, conceptual designs, discussions, and theoretical analyses, course participants will develop a thorough understanding of the developmental processes that affect the decisions, behaviors, and learning outcomes of adolescents. In turn, participants will be better positioned to positively impact the learning, development, and achievement of secondary school students.

15. 2020-2021 CSinPA K-8 Virtual Pathway

Registration is now open for our CSinPA K-8 Virtual Pathway, a computer science (CS) professional learning program for K-8 educators! The Pathway is a 100% virtual experience consisting of asynchronous and synchronous online activities that support participants in the development and implementation of a small-scale implementation pilot to expand CS access for students. The Pathway is provided at NO COST and Act 48 credit is available. The Pathway supports K-8 educators involved with CS instruction, whether as stand-alone classes or by integrating CS concepts and practices into other content-area instruction. It is recommended that LEAs engage with a team of 2+ educators to allow for collaboration throughout the Pathway. Over the course of the year-long cohort, participants set goals for expanding CS access for students and develop and share artifacts to demonstrate progress towards their goals. Teams from IUs 12, 13, 14, and 15 will participate in this networking cohort and all course content will be hosted in Schoology. Participants do NOT have to be designated CS or STEM teachers. No prior experience with CS or CS instruction is necessary. Pathway participants can include K-8 educators involved with computer science instruction, including: Grade-level teachers, Content-area teachers, Special education teachers, English language (ELL) teachers, Librarians, Specialists, and Instructional coaches. Note: This is an iteration of the K-8 Pathway provided to PASmart Targeted Grant recipients; however LEAs are welcome to engage additional educators in this cohort of the Pathway. **The cohort will open in Schoology on January 4, 2021.** The virtual kickoff MEETING for IU14 participants is Tues., January 5, from 2-3 PM. All Pathway participants/LEA team members should plan to attend. This event will include an overview of the Pathway materials in Schoology and the schedule of events moving forward for the year. The purpose of this online course is to impact student learning through the digital workshop framework that provides authentic writing opportunities for specific purposes. Computer mediated writing provides for choice about topic and genre, active revision, publication beyond the classroom, and addressing the craft of writing. Social networking and collaborative writing technologies are engrained in students' lives. Teachers have a crucial role in supporting students in understanding the complexities of communicating in a twenty-first century world. Digital writing is about the changes in the ecology of writing and communicating and what it means to write, to create, and to compose and share. This course is designed for asynchronous, self-paced learning, a student mastery-centered approach that utilizes web-based tools, resources and discussions that are appropriate for each student's learning environment. 20. Mindfulness for Educators and Their Students (CPE Course)

"This course is designed to examine the theory and practice of mindfulness and how it can influence both a teacher's personal and professional life. Basic mindfulness practices, neuroscience, identification of thoughts and emotions, and mindful communication practice will be explored, as well as applying these practices/concepts to both personal and professional situations. In addition, clear connections will be made between how personal practice can inform classroom management and interactions with students. Finally, participants will delve into how this same mindfulness practice can aid in the development of students of all ages. Teachers will be given strategies and techniques to introduce mindfulness appropriately into their classrooms and to begin a dialogue about mindfulness with other teachers and administration."

21. No Fear Coding for Beginners K-12 (CPE Course)

The online course is appropriate for all K - 8 educators who have little or no experience in computer science. The course aims to help participants understand how computational thinking fits into the larger curriculum. There will many opportunities to try coding at the students comfort level and support critical thinking more generally.

The learners will have diversified opportunities to engage in the content through discussions, interactive video, article readings, slide shows, video and hard copy tutorials. Students will be able to have options to select lessons and activities that address their instructional environment and their personal learning style.

23. What Every Teacher Should Know about Teaching English Language Learners (CPE Course)

This online course is intended to help be more successful with the EL's in the classroom. All the course's reading and writing assignments are intended to help participants better align their teaching with five Pennsylvania English Language Proficiency Standards. This framework was revised by the PA Department of Education in 2015 to better correlate with Pennsylvania Core/Academic Standards, thus increasing rigor in the ESL program and giving ELs equitable access to subject content. Throughout the course we utilize the PA English Language Proficiency Standards along with their Model Performance Indicators, to illustrate and teach how to effectively differentiate instruction and assessment across content areas for ELs at varying levels of English Language Proficiency.

24. Flipped, Blended, and Beyond! (CPE Course)

Location: ONLINE CLASS

This ONLINE course focuses not only on flipped instruction but also on technology integration and differentiated instruction which is inherently associated with flipping the classroom. Through an examination of ways to move lower depth of knowledge content and activities out of the "spotlight" in the classroom, teachers can greatly impact student achievement by increasing the amount of class time used for higher level activities such as discussions, projects, labs, and group activities. This course will impact student learning by providing teachers a clear and specific strategy to use when meaningfully integrating technology into the classroom. Student learning will be positively impacted because flipping the classroom provides avenues for a student-centered learning environment. Participants will analyze specific models of flipped instruction and design strategies for using the teaching model in their own classes.

Various theories of learning and human development will be explored, in relation to adolescents (i.e. youth aged twelve and older). Course participants will also examine various models for secondary education that are consistent with 21st century teaching and learning. Through research-based readings, case studies, conceptual designs, discussions, and theoretical analyses, course participants will develop a thorough understanding of the developmental processes that affect the decisions, behaviors, and learning outcomes of adolescents. This online course is intended to help be more successful with the EL's in the classroom. All the course's reading and writing assignments are intended to help participants better align their teaching with five Pennsylvania English Language Proficiency Standards. This framework was revised by the PA Department of Education in 2015 to better correlate with Pennsylvania Core/Academic Standards, thus increasing rigor in the ESL program and giving ELs equitable access to subject content. Throughout the course we utilize the PA English Language Proficiency Standards along with their Model Performance Indicators, to illustrate and teach how to effectively differentiate instruction and assessment across content areas for ELs at varying levels of English Language Proficiency.

The goal of this online course is to impact student learning by expanding their knowledge about and perspectives on children who are impacted by developmental trauma, such as neglect; divorce; physical, emotional and sexual abuse; significant familial mental health and substance abuse; witnessing domestic violence; displacement and homelessness.

Further, participants who take this course should be expected to see changes in student learning by being able to identify what the behaviors of a child who has experienced developmental trauma look like in the classroom setting, and being able to respond to those students' unique needs by having learned strategies to utilize within the classroom setting in order to mitigate significant behavioral and emotional manifestations that negatively impact educational performance and progress.
