This two-day training is intended to prepare staff to safely prevent and manage dangerous behavior. Staff learns to intervene professionally and therapeutically using a safe, effective approach designed to prevent or reverse escalation of problem behavior and avoid the use of restraint. Safety Care de-escalation skills work with individuals who can communicate verbally and those who cannot. Safety Care is based on an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) model and focuses on removing/reducing environmental consequences that reinforce problem behavior.

18. Building Capacity & Promoting Instruction Through PASA DLM

Program: PD & C Educational Consultants' Events

The PASA DLM is both an assessment system and a resource for instructional purposes. The BCIU Office of Professional Learning is offering state-mandated training on the instruction elements of this system. The Bureau of Special Education has mandated this training for all Special Education teachers instructing students who are eligible to take the PASA as well as their district LEA.

Objectives:

Participants will become familiar with PASA DLM terminology, understand how "Essential Elements (EEs)" are aligned to PA standards, use "Essential Elements" and "mini-maps" to plan instruction, and use PASA DLM resources to identify learning targets and support needs for individual students. Participants will see how EEs have already been modified for instructional use and identify existing resources to support implementation in lesson and unit planning. Please note the pre-requisite for this training course.

Pre-requisite:

Once registered for this training, you will receive a link to a video that you are required to watch prior to attending this training. This will be Part 1 of this training. Parts 2 & 3 will be covered in person on the training day in which you registered.

34. Empowering Citizen Scientists with GLOBE: New Protocols for Exploration

Description Discover how to inspire the next generation of citizen scientists in this full-day GLOBE workshop! Designed for both returning and new participants, this session will introduce different GLOBE protocols-new to this group but well-established in the GLOBE program-offering engaging, hands-on experiences that set students on the path to environmental stewardship. GLOBE's free interdisciplinary resources build higher-order thinking and science process skills, promoting students' ability to collect and analyze data that contributes to global environmental research. 35. Agriculture in the Classroom: Berks County Traditions & Horizons of the Food & Fiber Industry

Discover first-hand Berks County's vibrant agriculture sector while also learning how your food is produced! Educators are invited on a two-day tour of the agricultural industry in Berks County. Each day we'll travel by bus to visit producers, suppliers, and farm markets. This year's course includes visits to Clover Farms and Over Home Alpacas to name a few. We will explore the horizons of agriculture with technology, direct-to-consumer businesses, and niche agricultural products. Assignments will include developing two lesson plans to integrate the course information into classroom learning.

General info: Participants will meet at the Ag Center each day. We will be riding a school bus (provided by Quigley) to visit various farms and agribusinesses in Berks County. We will return to the Ag Center in the afternoon each day. $100 per person for the 2-day course. Covers lunch each day and transportation to sites.

Modeling Language in Everyday Activities- If you are supporting students with language difficulties in the general education classroom, this session is for you. Whether your student is a speaker or uses a communication device, how we talk with them makes a difference in how their language skills grow. We will review strategies for helping students to process language during daily activities and how to model language to help them express themselves. Boards and Buttons and iPads! Oh My!- We have many students who struggle to express themselves and have access to augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) systems. What is AAC? Is it only on an iPad? Why bother using a button with a recorded message? Is a communication board really helpful? These and other questions will be addressed as we demonstrate a variety of AAC systems and discuss their purpose.

The end project will be a slideshow of the educator's experiences during their 3-day internship.

41. Paraprofessional Summer Series #4 - Direct Instruction & IEP Basics

Program: PD & C Educational Consultants' Events

Audience: Paraprofessionals

The training will consist of 1/2 day Direct Instruction and 1/2 day IEP Basics ½ day Direct Instruction: Paraprofessionals will learn the importance of the components built into a direct instruction lesson. They will practice using a signal for choral responding, reading from a scripted lesson, and tips & tricks for specific programs. We will introduce Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, and Connecting Math. Paraprofessionals will work together to practice delivering a lesson from each program. ½ day IEP Basics: Paraprofessionals will be introduced to a mock student's IEP. We will highlight the most important sections of the IEP from a Paraprofessional's perspective, including: Present levels of Performance, Annual goals, and Specially Designed Instruction. We will look at a variety of commonly seen SDIs and elaborate on each one. We will further discuss how to best support students in a least restrictive environment, using the noted SDIs.

This two day training is intended to prepare staff to safely prevent and manage dangerous behavior. Staff learns to intervene professionally and therapeutically using a safe, effective approach designed to prevent or reverse escalation of problem behavior and avoid the use of restraint. Safety Care de-escalation skills work with individuals who can communicate verbally and those who cannot. Safety Care is based on an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) model and focuses on removing/reducing environmental consequences that reinforce problem behavior.

Proloquo2Go is the choice of many school district teams for students using an augmentative/alternative communication app. This three-hour session will cover features and customization of vocabulary within this app. Participants are encouraged to bring iPads with this app installed as there will be only a few iPads available for participants to share.

SymbolStix is a subscription service that allows users to build static communication boards for multiple types of activities. This three-hour session will cover the features of the program and how to create basic activity boards, core boards, and other types of visual supports for receptive and expressive communication. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops and login information for this subscription.

Objectives:

Learning through Routines: Embedding Instruction for Young Children in Child Care and Preschool Classrooms
Early Intervention in Pennsylvania promotes the use of coaching supports and collaborative services to meet the needs of infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children with disabilities and their families, caregivers, and early care and education providers. During this session, participants will be introduced to the evidenced-based frameworks for Early Intervention service delivery in Pennsylvania; namely, Family Guided Routines Based Intervention and Embedded Instruction for Early Learning. The rationale and key principles underlying these service delivery models will be discussed. Participants will then be guided through the steps of Embedded Instruction for Early Learning to increase their understanding of how Early Intervention and Early Care and Education professionals can work together to provide embedded learning opportunities to children with delays and disabilities in childcare and preschool settings and to support participants' confidence in sharing this information with families.

This module aims to build the capacity of participants to serve on a Tier 1 Team by 1) providing definitions and components of SWPBIS and 2) positioning teams to engage in effective teaming and action planning with the use of fidelity tools. This module also ensures that all team members develop an in-depth understanding of the importance of establishing school-wide behavioral expectations. In addition to establishing positively stated expectations, this module will require team members to create a behavior matrix that defines the stated behavioral expectations across all settings of the school community. Team members will also work together to generate a plan for obtaining staff and student feedback on the expectations and matrix. This training is only open to invited teams and a building administrator is required to attend each session. All participants must sign up for all 3 days of PBIS training. 69. C-STAG Threat Assessment Training

The Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines (V-STAG) is an evidence-based model for schools to use in conducting threat assessments in K-12 schools. The model provides a step-by-step process in the manual, Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines, for conducting a threat assessment when a student has made a threat or engaged in threatening behavior. The goal of this model is to prevent violence and return a student to school by understanding why a threat was made and resolving the conflict or problem that stimulated the threat. This model was developed by Dr. Dewey Cornell and colleagues at the University of Virginia and has been widely adopted by schools in Virginia and nationwide.

74. Youth Mental Health First Aide (Virtual)

Mental Health First Aid for Youth is designed to teach school staff, teachers, health, and human services workers how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Participants will engage with the course asynchronously for approximately 4.5 hours prior to the 4.5 synchronous virtual training. Participants will be able to:



• Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.



• Use a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help.



• Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.



• Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.

This one-day re-certification training is intended to refresh previously learned skills and maintain trainee compliance with Safety Care standards. Safety-Care training is intended to prepare staff to safely prevent and manage dangerous behavior. Staff learns to intervene professionally and therapeutically using a safe, effective approach designed to prevent or reverse escalation of problem behavior and avoid the use of restraint. Safety-Care de-escalation skills work with individuals who can communicate verbally and those who cannot. Safety-Care is based on an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) model and focuses on removing/reducing environmental consequences that reinforce problem behavior.

The purpose of this session is to provide school personnel who are new to the school attendance process (or would like a refresher) a basic understanding of the Pa Compulsory Attendance Law, the PDE BEC and the process that needs to be followed especially in Berks County and the resources available for assistance. The workshop will include information about holding a School Attendance Improvement Conference and completing the School Attendance Improvement Plan. The Berks County Protocol and the Advancing School Attendance Program will be reviewed.

93. PREPaRE Core Workshop 2 (WS2) Mental Health Crisis Interventions: Responding to an Acute Traumatic Stressor in Schools

Audience: Workshop 2- Mental Health Crisis Interventions: Responding to an Acute Traumatic Stressor in Schools is for individuals who are school mental health professionals, including school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers, as well as behavior specialists, nurses, and local community mental health providers. Individuals should attend as part of a school or LEA team.

The PREPaRE curriculum is a two-part training developed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that addresses both crisis prevention and response. Dependent upon an individual's role in the school/ LEA team, they may attend only one or both workshops. The PREPaRE Workshops are designed to be completed by school teams. PREPaRE Workshops provide a framework for schools or LEAS that require administrative support and a team approach to contextualize to their setting and implement with a team approach. PREPARE Core Workshop 2 (WS2) Mental Health Crisis Interventions: Responding to an Acute Traumatic Stressor in Schools is a two-day training focused on mental health intervention and recovery following any type of crisis. Participants will: 1. Report reduced anxiety and fear associated with the provision of school mental health crisis interventions; 2. Report increased knowledge and confidence associated with the provision of school mental health crisis interventions; 3. Identify variables that help to estimate the number of individuals traumatized by a crisis; 4. Recognize the difference between common crisis reactions and mental illness; 5. Identify the elements of school crisis preparedness specified by the PREPaRE acronym; 6. Recognize risk factors that predict psychological trauma; 7. Identify the warning signs that indicate psychological trauma; 8. Place PREPaRE mental health crisis interventions on a multitiered continuum ranging from least to most restrictive; and 9. Match the degree of psychological trauma risk to the appropriate school crisis interventions.
