Program: Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment

Audience: All Educators

Dates: 3/19/2026

Meeting Times: 12:00 - 2:00

Location: Circle of Courage - Smith School

Paper Tigers (2010) depicts the dramatic transformation in troubled teens when the staff at their school incorporates the findings from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Studies into their education and support services. Paper Tigers follows a year in the life of an alternative high school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families. "Stressed brains can't learn." That was the nugget of neuroscience that Jim Sporleder, principal of a high school riddled with violence, drugs and truancy, took away from an educational conference in 2010. Following six students over the course of a school year, we see Lincoln's staff try a new approach to discipline: one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgment and suspension. Paper Tigers is a testament to what the developmental science is showing: that just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person's life. Utilizing this story, we can create common messages that focus on the need to understand brain structure, and the idea that supporting healthy child development cannot all be on one person's shoulders 1/4 it takes a community of engaged community members to support the healthy development of children, promoting a healthy prosperous future both for the child and the community. A facilitated discussion will aim to foster critical thinking, deepen understanding of these complex topics, encourage empathy, and evaluate the film's message as it applies to our educational settings. Have you ever worked with a student who isn't making the reading progress you'd expect-despite targeted instruction and multiple interventions? In some cases, the challenge may not be reading instruction alone. An underlying visual processing disorder (VPD) can significantly affect how students learn to read, attend, and behave in the classroom. In this two-hour professional development session, educators will explore what visual processing disorders are, how they may present in school settings, and how they can overlap with reading difficulties and behavioral concerns. Participants will learn to recognize common red flags, better understand student behaviors through a visual-processing lens, and apply practical strategies to support students more effectively. Educators will also gain guidance on documenting observations and communicating concerns clearly and collaboratively with families, helping to strengthen the home1/4school partnership. This session is designed for K1/48 classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, and therapists who want to deepen their understanding of visual processing and expand their toolkit for supporting students who struggle with reading and classroom behavior. The registration fee for employees of TST Region districts (Candor, Dryden, George Jr. Republic, Groton, Ithaca, Lansing, Newfield, Trumansburg, and South Seneca) is $0. The registration fee for all other participants is $0.
